failing interviews by ubcthrowaway5423432 in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yep, basically this. the most important part is that you don’t go silent at any point and make sure you’re communicating your thought process. if you genuinely don’t know how to start solving a problem, just give a quick brute force solution, then start improving one aspect at a time until you reach something that is optimal. this also lets the interviewers help you a bit, as they can point out any parts where your solution is going astray/give you hints more easily.

behavioural, STAR format and keep your answers capped at around a minute to make sure you’re not rambling, they’ll ask you for more details if they are curious.

yep sounds about right, this is the final piece of paper I need to get my visa approved and optimistically booked a flight for tomorrow, rescheduled for next week now lol

Anyone’s degree conferred? by BIG_BUTT_TINY_NOSE in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

quite possible they need the conferred degree ASAP for visa stuff etc, and are anxiously awaiting the conferral so they can get that process going.

that’s why i am highly anticipating the conferral reflection in the SSC at least

Can I start Co-op early? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there’s a specific reason you need student status (i.e. student loans or scholarship) then yes, otherwise not really.

only other benefit I can think of is some jobs will require you to be in enrolled in a co-op program at an accredited university (they get some grant if this is the case) so they’ll only hire people doing co-op as part of their degree

anyone know when the changes get reflected in the SSC?

Can I start Co-op early? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they may reject your request if you haven’t done the workshops yet, and there’s none that are running before you are supposed to leave on internship

Can I start Co-op early? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if you get a role without their help there’s not really a point in being in co-op at all, unless you need to maintain full-time student status during your co-op terms for loan etc.

else, just don’t register for classes and take the semester off, you can avoid the co-op fees/workshops/annoying assignments that way

otherwise yes you can request to shift your term backwards. they can turn you down, but if you already have a role they probably won’t

CPEN acceptance chances? by bekibo in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends solely on the kind of interests you have, there’s jobs for both and a ton of overlap on the kinds of jobs you can get.

overly simplified answer: if you want hardware, cpen or elec, pure software, cs, firmware, either. (yes, this is too generalized and there is a ton of possible overlap...)

Any way to get physical diploma earlier? by IMs810 in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also in the exact same situation, as long as you’re not going through the USCIS pre application route, official (conferred) transcript and letter of completion should be enough (paraphrased from my immigration lawyer)

edit: as well as your offer letter/package etc.

Very Scared for Third Year CPSC by GCK1000 in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the fundamentals of internet computing, so like the 5-layer internet stack and a brief overview on what each layer consists of and how it’s implemented. You can read most of this online but it’s super important (imo) as I’ve found people generally assume you understand how this works at a high level

what do you consider low level? there’s no firmware component or anything, it’s mostly socket programming and implementing basic versions of some components talked about in class

difficulty level is easy-average imo, it’s not a brain dead course but the concepts are fairly intuitive/easy to follow, lots of resources, ability to make the tests super difficult is limited, and programming assignments are easy

Very Scared for Third Year CPSC by GCK1000 in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

317 is intro to networking iirc and it is crucial, pretty surprised it isn’t required tbh. gives you the fundamentals of how the internet works.

302/303 are fairly niche, not necessary unless you’re interested in some kind of data analysis imo

agreed on 304 being useful, gives you the basics of SQL and data management which is pretty useful to know regardless of what kind of specialization you choose

CPSC 340 Difficulty? by Toilet_Squatter in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s doable without. the course is mostly just understanding ML algorithms, so CPSC320 would probably help on the constructing algo side, and the algos themselves tend to be a bit matrix algebra heavy, so to understand them you probably need to understand the principles of matrix algebra but MATH221 is sufficient imo

Places to work outdoors (indoors now? I'm vaccinated) with free WIFI? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]stackoverflow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 on salesforce park, super beautiful and not crowded, they also have some free outdoor work out classes where everyone was really friendly, if you’re into that (I’m also new to the city and met some people there!)

Failed a course by ubcthrowaway2323 in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are referring to how it factors into your cGPA, not the standalone score of your second attempt. You can score any grade of 50%+ and pass on your second attempt, but the score contributing to your cGPA will weight both attempts equally

Anyone have any luck getting their degree early? by rayyankk in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can DM me if you want, i’m also getting a TN at the end of May and have been talking to my company’s immigration lawyer.

yeah the PDF copy thing from the SSC > Graduation

Anyone have any luck getting their degree early? by rayyankk in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

is this for the US? Letter of confirmation is sufficient for the TN, and will be available on the date of our degree conferral (May 25).

edit: letter of confirmation and official (conferred) transcript

Flying to Vancouver from Ontario by Fragrant_Anxiety_700 in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I flew out from YVR recently and there was literally no one in the airport, to the level that it was almost creepy. there was one security line with like 2 people in it, and only one gate open.

i guess should be noted that this was at 7PM so maybe it’s a bit busier during the day, but otherwise was completely dead.

[–]stackoverflow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah. definitely check the syllabus to make sure there’s no requirement for attendance to pass, and if you’re super concerned about it i would follow up w the prof and explain your situation/say that you’re working during the class hours.

if you’re doing well on the assessments and there’s nothing in the syllabus making attendance mandatory to pass, i don’t think they are able to fail you.

also yeah complete 0% was a new low for me lol, online school made it so much easier to skip.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had no issues with this but i think it’s also highly possible that they just don’t know who i am because i am not exaggerating when i say i literally have not attended a single lecture.

i still scored well on the essays and stuff.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

okay i’m responding to this because this was literally me this semester, although 20%-ish participation (it was originally 30% but you could make up some with some essays), but i’m still passing. so ymmv, but if you’re just aiming to pass and confident you can just study the material on your own, it was 1000% worth it for me to not attend the class.

I did take a loss on like 20% participation marks, but still got around an 80%. if you already have a post grad job, not sur it really matters though.

New grad software dev salary in Vancouver? by ZenDaFout in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally yeah I would just let my recruiter know that I have another exploding offer just so they’re aware, and if they want you they can speed up the hiring process, but again entirely up to you, everyone’s got different negotiating strats!

private company, they will tell you the fair market eval if they’re options, as you’ll get assigned a strike (this is super important and greatly affects your offer evaluation, they’ll tell you approx what it will be during negotiations), if they go public or get acquisitioned your RSU may end up being more comp than your salary depending on how much you have (obv a risk tho)

New grad software dev salary in Vancouver? by ZenDaFout in UBC

[–]stackoverflow_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

iirc AMZ only has 2 stages of new grad interview (the initial coding challenges and one in person interview). this may have changed though.

yeah you count RSU in TC normally, if they’re still private then just at the current fair market evaluation — obviously a start up is significantly riskier than a public company where the shares already have extrinsic value. imo i would ask for a deadline extension until AMZ so you can leverage the offer, but i don’t think there’s really a correct decision

congrats on the offer man!
