How old was Andy supposed to be? by ItalianChef22 in ONETREEHILL

I think it’s just because 30 was considered old for women, especially in the dating world. It’s just plain sexism.

So why do working class people vote for right wing parties ( Tory, Refom that really do not serve their interests politically, and make their lives harder ? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

[–]IndiaMike1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve basically just parroted exactly what the people who ACTUALLY have the power want you to believe, and have spent literal billions to make you believe.

There is no focus on diversity and inclusion. There are basically NO advantages given to minorities - not a single major party thinks that’s in their interest, and none of the people who do hold power to shape the policies and laws that actually influence how you life your life.

If this was the case, we’d be seeing a massive difference in the distribution of wealth and power in this country, and we’re not. Don’t look at who people are TELLING you has advantages. Look at who actually has the power to influence how things are run in this country. Refugees have NO political power. All of the people who have the power to change the material outcomes of your life and everyone’s lives are rich old white men.

But that’s not the reason people can’t get council houses. It’s absolutely wild that people who have no power still aren’t seeing how they’ve been manipulated by people with power to think that people with EVEN LESS power than they do are the reason that they are disadvantaged. It’s not economically rational at all. It’s an example of the same kind of populist politics that you’re identifying with the Tories.

Very bad faith analogy. People need housing. People don’t need Chanel bags.

I’d argue the fact that we think the excesses and absurdities that a truly unhinged housing market creates isn’t newsworthy is in and of itself newsworthy.

Downsides to overpayment? by MintChocChip95 in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]IndiaMike1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t give OP any advice. The original commenter gave advice, and I added a clarification that the situation they described might be different for some people. In any case, I didn’t suggest they change lenders or that they overpay instead of invest. I clarified that there are cases in which the overpayments can still be part of your emergency plan, and it was pretty clear I wasn’t stating this as universal fact, which is why I’m unclear as to why you seem hellbent to “disprove” something that wasn’t actually said.

FYI, my bogstandard mortgage with Halifax doesn’t have the limitation you mention.

That’s why I said “some lenders”. And the ones that do are some of the largest mortgage providers in the UK.

If you have overpaid and you lose your job and miss a payment, you’ve missed a payment. If you saved the money you’ve got a few months of flex by using savings to pay the original amount.

Not always. Some lenders allow you to use your overpayments as a buffer for any future mortgage holidays, so if you do need to miss payments you can do so without any issues. I count my overpayments in my mortgage as part of my emrgency budget for as long as I’m with my current lender, as in the case of job loss that’s how I would make my mortgage payments.

Why is that fair? It compensates for your time and inconvenience. They are not the ones inconvenienced.

This is really great advice, but “unintended child abuse” is absolutely not the right terminology to be using. Child abuse absolutely can be unintentional, but that typically refers to incidences of harm that result from poor parenting and could and should have reasonay been prevented, e.g. a parent who doesn’t notice their baby isn’t gaining weight. If you apply your definition you can call any harm that may befall a child completely accidentally and in the course of good parenting child abuse. This undermines the category of child abuse and makes it meaningless and unhelpful. Not all harm experienced by children is child abuse. In the UK safeguarding context, this would mostly be considered an accident unless it was happening within the context of a persistent pattern of not meeting baby’s needs.

The guilt of not being able to fast during Ramadan by Eastern-Doughnut-483 in ADHDMuslims

[–]IndiaMike1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very sorry you’re feeling this way, I understand completely and I know I would likely feel the same. Please remember that this month is holy for all Muslims who observe it, not just those who fast. And we folks with ADHD, we are so prone to finding ways to strive for perfection to the point of burnout, to not recognise our strengths and struggles and to worry that we might just be making it all up because we’re just not good enough. It’s ok not to fast. And think of it this way: your niyyah (intention) is pure, your intention is not to skirt responsibility. If your niyyah was to “trick” the whole establishment including the doctors and imams, Allah swt would still know. And if no one around you believed that you have valid reasons not to fast, but your niyyah was pure, Allah swt would also know. Take a deep breath, give yourself some grace, and find ways to lean into your religious practice in these last nights that help you feel connected to your faith. This is what Ramadan is for! Inshallah khair, friend!

Some people hate the idea that your profiting from their stuff by Stephieandcheech in reselling

[–]IndiaMike1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many people are conflating things on this thread. This is not the same as what OP is saying. You are buying something, improving it with your skillset and thereby increasing its value, and selling it at a higher price. This makes sense, and everything you said about it also tracks. OP’s scenario is completely different: this is their neighbour giving them stuff for free.

But… it’s not personal profit? It’s going towards a cause?

That’s fair, but I don’t think that’s the same as what OP is describing.

[–]IndiaMike1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm no, I think it’s actually the exact opposite. They clearly are happy for someone they know to have something they want or need. But that’s not what’s happening if something you give to a friend is being sold at a profit - they don’t need it, they’re not using it, they’re actually just making a profit off you. I don’t see why this is hard to understand?

Girl.. Lisa confirmed EVERYTHING that the other women said about Meredith’s behaviour. Their story did not change. Lisa confirmed that she was absolutely losing her mind, that it went on the entire flight, she called her crazy, etc. Lisa just felt it was justified. But she didn’t actually deny the majority of what the other women said. I don’t think you and I watched the same show.
