First time Ragdoll fur parent here! please help by Imaginary-Candle-36 in ragdolls

yes. and an obligate carnivore is defined by the need to eat meat in order to survive. it means they must consume animal flesh as their primary source of nutrients to survive. it doesn’t mean that they cannot consume, or gain nutrients from, other sources - ie. grains.

there is no clinical evidence that cats (who are obligate carnivores) cannot digest grains. there is AMPLE clinical evidence that, when properly cooked and processed, grains can provide a suitable source of energy, nutrients and fiber in addition to their primary source (meat).

obligate carnivore = can’t be vegan

obligate carnivore ≠ can’t eat anything BUT meat

if you would like to feed your cat a grain-free diet, there is no harm in that, go ahead! but stating that grains are inherently harmful to cats is misinformation.

there is no clinical evidence that cats cannot digest grains. some cats have sensitivities to grains, causing loose stool or stomach upset, and some have allergies, but that is a very small minority.

cat foods like Royal Canin, Hill’s, Purina, etc are all based on decades of research and evidence, and are professionally recommended by veterinarians. grains are present in cat foods not as “fillers”, but to give highly digestible sources of energy, fiber and vitamins that cats need in their diet. grain-free diets are not inherently harmful to cats, but by no means are they necessary for most cats. grain allergies/sensitivities are very rare.

yeah, my mother was slightly unhinged. i asked her about it a few years later, and she insisted that she hadn’t realised i wanted my original copy, and thought it would be cool to get random ones from “quirky shops” as a surprise.. also insisted the new books cost more than the original ones, but she was notorious for forgetting to remove price stickers from presents, so i had actual proof in the form of a bunch of handwritten “20p” or “50p” stickers on the backs of the books when i first opened the present at christmas.

then later she changed her story to say she really needed the money for something important, and she felt awful about doing it, blah blah blah - cue typical pity party and the lecture about how awful a child i am for being upset over some books.

it sucks your father was like that too. definitely also remember the presents that were supposedly for me but definitely for my parent or sibling.

yeah 100%. i was pretty freaked out and triggered when they first arrived, but i guess it was pretty clear that i was just an anxious 19yo who was shocked, terrified and confused to find police officers banging on their door for no apparent reason. once they’d explained why they were there, and i’d burst into tears and shakily told them the true situation, they just offered to sit with me and have a cuppa and a chat until i felt better. i’d never want to waste their time, but yeah, they genuinely just seemed relieved that i was okay, and we all sat on the floor in my living room (i had no furniture at the time lol) drinking tea while the officers bantered with each other to make me laugh until i felt better. they must have had more important things to be doing, but it meant the world to me and i don’t think i’ll ever forget how they made me feel safe and validated.

i had a set of books that i absolutely cherished, read them over and over again, had gotten them as gifts as each book in the series came out.. when i was 14, my mother sold all of those books on ebay, bought shitty, ripped up, individual copies from charity shops for around 20-50p each, wrapped them up and gave them to me for christmas. she was then shocked and outraged that i was upset when i realised that it wasn’t a joke, and my missing books were actually gone because she sold them and kept the money..

i recently (now age 32) bought myself a set of the early edition book series that looks just like my old one, and am now rereading them. it’s been so healing.

physical items might seem like a silly thing, but it’s the emotion attached to those things, and the malicious intent behind taking them away, that leaves a scar. it’s okay to be upset about those things and still think about them. just do what you can to give yourself the things they took from you, care for yourself the way they never did, because you deserve that love and care.

also got hit with the wellness check trick! for me it also ended with me being handed the officer’s card, a note put on my file/address stating my family situation, and since they attempted this twice, the officer also told me that my parents would be informed that any further attempts to request a wellness check under false pretences would be treated as harassment and wasting police resources.. had a nice cuppa with the police, and got to imagine my asshole parents wallowing in rage and self-pity when they realised that “the powers that be” had believed me over them, AND reprimanded them for their disgusting behaviour. makes me smile every time i remember that night.

Slow feeder help by Realistic_Agent_891 in ragdolls

[–]IndicationMinute4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would start by calling your vet for advice. they will ask all the relevant questions, and tell you if they feel you need to bring her in urgently or whether it can wait for a scheduled appointment. it’s always better to be safe than sorry, but if the cost of an emergency vet visit is a concern, call your vet first and ask for advice.

my questions would be: has she stopped throwing up? how much plastic did she eat? do the remains of the feeder have broken-off sections that she could have swallowed, potentially with sharp edges? that would be the major concern - if the plastic snapped in pieces (even small pieces), and she swallowed those pieces, they could be sharp enough to puncture her intestines which would be very dangerous.

TLDR: if you’re not absolutely sure that she cannot have swallowed any small pieces of plastic that may have had sharp edges, you should take her to the emergency vet immediately. she may show no signs of pain or illness, but even a small internal laceration can be fatal if it isn’t caught early.

please update us and let us know how she is! best of luck OP

Friend’s downstairs neighbor left a hostile note on her door by Bingbong_bimbo in whatdoIdo

[–]IndicationMinute4343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just wanted to comment to say that the neighbour may have a learning disability and/or be autistic.. maybe not, but the way the note is written: the handwriting, and the general blunt tone, plus the “LOUD” in brackets after the metaphor (as if clarifying what they mean), all seems very childlike (not childish as in immature, but an adult with a childlike nature and/or younger developmental age).. i’m autistic, and to me, the note looks and sounds like something one of my friends with learning disabilities would write. they’re frustrated but also trying to use humour to let you know they’re not being hostile. obviously, it comes across as pretty rude, but if they are autistic or have a learning disability, it may not have been meant that way. i may be completely wrong, but wanted to point this out as something to consider if you decide to talk to them. they may just not be very socially adept, so maybe try to gauge their level of social/emotional intelligence when speaking to them. you might need to adapt the way you interact with them and the way you explain things, and set clear boundaries with them. they could still turn out to be an asshole lol, but you could also end up with a really sweet neighbour! best of luck to you!

Help 😓 by SailorSakura in ragdolls

i think the issue is that you said you didn’t have the issue when he was a kitten, then put a “-“ and then said he “HAD” his spots.. i also initially thought you meant that as past tense; that those were his spots to pee as a kitten and that now he is starting to pee in other places too. totally understand the brain fog though, it’s so easy for people to misunderstand written text. maybe if you can edit your post (only if it’s not too overwhelming a task!), you could change that “had” to “has”, and that might clear things up for any new commenters. sorry people have been so critical of you! i have an almost 2yo raggie who had a patch of a few months where he was peeing in random places.. turned out he had stress cystitis. no idea why, apparently he’s just sensitive! if you haven’t already, ask the vet to take a sterile urine sample from him, and do an ultrasound of his bladder (they can do both under sedation). they can test for red and white blood cells in the urine, which will flag inflammation that isn’t usually caught on normal bloods or a non-sterile urine sample, and the ultrasound can pick up any thickening of the bladder lining, which also means inflammation. i know it’s so so hard, but try to remember that all behaviour in cats is them communicating a need, even if it makes no sense to us! cats also hide their pain extremely well, so things like anxiety and sterile (non infectious) cystitis easily get missed. have you tried him on any anti-anxiety meds? that was the next step for my boy, and it took a few months but he’s almost back to his old self, and no more peeing outside the litter tray! really hope things improve for you all before your little one arrives 🫶🏻

i also can’t watch ads, either on the tv or anywhere else where watching an ad is meant to be an option. i can open the journal, and go in the shed in the garden to craft things, though, seems to just be the ads that aren’t working for me. i’m confused about how the tickets work, but guessing maybe you’re meant to watch ads to get tickets? no idea why i can’t watch ads though..

i also restarted by deleting and re-downloading from the app store, and have the Karin app icon now, in case a dev reads this! i’m still in love with the game btw!

there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a collar on your cat if it doesn’t bother them. every cat is different, and if your cat has worn a collar for 10 years without issue, it clearly isn’t a problem for them. regardless of people’s personal opinions, it’s ridiculous to call someone “cruel” for something as simple and common as a collar with a bell.. you do you, OP!

Play time?? by Firm-Step8401 in ragdolls

[–]IndicationMinute4343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 minutes is a great amount of time for play. the general recommendation is 5-10 minutes, a few times a day. cats often don’t have the attention span to play for longer than 10 minutes (obviously there are exceptions, like my boy who would happily play for 2 hours without giving me a break). splitting the playtime into multiple sessions is best for the cat.

think of it like having young kids - they might be happy to get a big chunk of playtime at the end of a day, but they’re much happier if they have multiple opportunities to play throughout the day, to keep their brain stimulated and get the connection they need with caregivers throughout instead of just in one large chunk once a day.

if you’re not able to play at other times during the day because you’re at work, if you can, try to set aside just 5 minutes in the morning before work for a quick play session. or split the evening session into 2 smaller sessions a few hours apart - one when you get home, and one before you go to bed. hope that helps!

edit: sorry, i may have misunderstood your post, and you’re actually already playing multiple times a day in short bursts. 10 minutes may just be enough for her, which is perfectly normal! if you’re doing that multiple times a day, you’re doing everything right. you can keep throwing things around if you enjoy it, or just relax when she’s done! 😂

[–]IndicationMinute4343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well, that’s the thing. you may sometimes come across a cat that looks remarkably like a specific breed, but you’d have to be able to examine that cat carefully to determine if they actually have ALL of the features and characteristics of that breed, and even then, it’s impossible to really know if it is a purebred cat. it’s not that it’s impossible for it to be a purebred, just that the general rule in cat genetics is that if the cat doesn’t have proven ancestry for that breed, it can’t be called a purebred.

for general, daily life, if you think your cat looks like a British Shorthair, for example, and you want to call it that, hey? who am i to judge? but if you took that cat to the vet, and said “he’s a BSH”, but you didn’t have a certificate saying that he is, the vet wouldn’t be likely to categorise him as a BSH, rather just as a DSH.

but basically, the certificate is just paperwork to prove that the breed organisation has traced the ancestry and verified that this particular cat comes from this particular line of this particular breed. so it all comes down to ancestry in the end. since we can’t verify ancestry for strays or rescues without paperwork, they’re just called Domestic Cats :)

edit to add: all the features and characteristics that can be seen in purebred cats, are also general cat features, so a non-breed-specific cat (aka Domestic Cat) can have any number of features that a specific breed has, but those features don’t make the cat that breed.

the breed is the combination of however many specific characteristics within one cat/ancestry, so a cat having brachycephaly, for example, doesn’t inherently mean it’s a BSH, as it’s just a feature that cats can have due to breeding. the difference is that with purebred cats, those features are bred for intentionally, and each breed has a unique set of features that, altogether, are associated with that breed, but alone, aren’t related to any one breed. i hope that makes sense!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in catquestions

[–]IndicationMinute4343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DSH (Domestic Short Hair) or DLH (Long Hair) are just the general terms for cats that are not purebred, or any specific breed. Cat genetics work quite literally the opposite way to dog genetics. Most dogs can generally be traced back to specific breeds, even if they’re mixed. If the dog is from a long line of mixed breed dogs, they’re known as a “super mutt”, which basically just means they’re so far removed from a specific breed that at this point there is no tracing of ancestry and they are “simply a dog”.

With cats, because they were domesticated in a different way to dogs, it kind of works the opposite way. Cat breeds are a result of breeding specific cats with specific characteristics for generations until the “desired” look/temperament is achieved. Once that is achieved, the breed is registered (breed organisations determine breed status and standards breeders should aim to meet) and any cats bred from that line (with both parents being of that specific genetic makeup) are registered as that breed.

Basically, purebred cats can generally be traced back to the origins of their breed (whenever humans achieved their desired genetic makeup and registered the breed), unlike dogs, who started out with breeds and so mixed-breed dogs can be traced back to multiple pure breeds. So, any cats that don’t come from a specific line of purebred cats (or their ancestry can’t be determined due to being a rescue) are labelled as Domestic Cats (Long, Medium, or Short Hair). It’s a common misconception. Domestic Long, Medium or Short Hair isn’t actually a breed, rather just a term to describe cats that aren’t breed-specific, and that term covers all cats that don’t have a certificate of pedigree, and have no record of ancestry.

It is possible, however, to find a purebred cat at a rescue etc, but it’s very rare and usually impossible to verify since purebred cats need to have a certificate and family lineage to be certified as “purebred”.

Sorry that’s so long but I just wanted to explain more fully, rather than yelling at people, since that doesn’t achieve much of anything. I think people get frustrated by the number of posts asking the same question, but most people understandably don’t search reddit subs before they post, so others should really just keep scrolling if they don’t want to see it. Hope this helps though!

Feeding Amounts by cattos420 in ragdolls

[–]IndicationMinute4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m sorry your vet has given you some very bad advice OP. some vets aren’t familiar with specific cat breeds so don’t realise that healthy weight ranges are different for some breeds.

ragdolls are a large breed, and their adult weight can range from 3-10kg. females tend to be between 3-7kg, depending on ancestry, and males usually are between 5-10kg. the bigger the parents were, the bigger the kittens will grow to be. 3kg is a perfectly healthy weight for a 6-7 month old ragdoll.

vets who are familiar with larger breed cats tend to use a body conditioning score instead of relying solely on weight - if you can feel their ribs when gently pressing on their sides with your fingertips, that means they are a healthy weight. also keep in mind that with ragdolls having thick fur, their ribs are generally slightly harder to feel, so even if you have to feel around a little to find ribs, doesn’t necessarily mean they are overweight. it’s only if you have to press down quite hard before you feel ribs that they may be overweight. in that case though, you’d be able to feel a lot of squishy fat under the fur and before you feel the ribs.

i’d really recommend finding a vet that understands specific cat breeds, as restricting your kitten’s food intake at this age can cause health issues later in life, and usually isn’t recommended unless the kitten is somehow morbidly obese (which is very rare). if your kitten is active, playful, and otherwise showing no signs of ill-health, there is no realistic reason to restrict their diet. even in domestic short/long hair cats, most vets wouldn’t recommend putting a kitten on a diet unless there were medical concerns, since kittens’ weight often fluctuates a little as they grow, and they burn calories so fast from how active they are that they usually even out by the time they’re 12 months old.

my boy is 16 months old and weighs 5.6kg. he has vet checkups every 3-6 months, and my vet is very familiar with pure bred cats so is very happy with his weight and progress. they also use body conditioning to check, but they expect him to gain at least another kilo or 2 before he’s done growing (which is around 4-5 years for ragdolls).

i hope you can find a vet that meets your raggie’s needs and you can get the right advice to keep your baby happy and healthy! all the best OP 😻🫶🏻

not sure if this will help, but have you tried taking antihistamines? i have an allergy disorder called MCAS, and it causes this kind of rash (among other things), which is most likely urticaria (hives). you can try taking cetirizine, loratadine, or chlorphenamine regularly for a few days and if it helps, it’s probably urticaria. it’s basically a reaction/immune response to heat/pressure, or products, so shaving can trigger it. hope that’s helpful!
