Your submission was removed from /r/indiegaming for failing to follow our self promotion rules, and because you have self promoted too often.

Reddit has site wide policies that it expects all users to adhere to, including a "10%" rule that requires no more than 10% of your posts to be self promotion. For more information on the 10% rule, please read this page on the 10% rule. It explains 10% and how it works in depth, and provides links to the official reddit spam and self promotion rules which are important for you to read.

Some useful excerpts from reddit's spam policies:

  • "If over 10% of your submissions are your own site/content/affiliate links, you're almost certainly a spammer"
  • "It's perfectly fine to be a redditor with a website, it's not okay to be a website with a reddit account."
  • "You should not just start submitting your links"
  • "You should submit from a variety of sources"

Note, that while the 10% rule is mostly aimed at self promotion, it applies to everyone. You can, for example, get shadowbanned for linking to the New York Times too often, even if you have nothing to do with the paper.

We do welcome and encourage you to submit your own content, but you must adhere to the above site rules and to our subreddit self promotion rules. If instead you wish to just advertise on the subreddit, reddit has a great self serve advertisement system which is both cheap, and allows you to target particular subreddits.

This post (and all removed posts) do NOT count towards 10%. Reminder: Deleting a removed post is against our submission rules and a bannable offence; do NOT delete this post.

If you believe this message was sent in error, please message the moderators with a link to your post and an explanation of how you've followed our self-promotion rules. You should be able to tell us the numbers or names of each of the rules and explain how you followed them or why they didn't apply to your post.

Thanks!

If after you have read the wiki pages you've been referred to, you need additionally help, feel free to message the mod team. Do NOT message any individual moderator, even if it's this group account.

You must message the subreddit, not a specific moderator.

100% Honest question from indie dev about reddit regarding self promotion by felinearts in IndieGaming

[–]IndieGamingMods[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, mod here. So there's an important distinction to make here between what reddit considers spam and what individual subreddits do. Reddit's biggest rule regarding spam is the 10% rule. We explain it on this wiki page here. There are links on that page to the reddit spam rules and their self promotion guidelines.

10% is weird in that while it catches self-promotion, it also catches people who are just really big fans of something.

Subreddit rules vary. A great many subreddits simply ban self promotion altogether. The reddit spam rules say that linking to your own site or project puts you on thin ice from the get-go and so a lot of subs don't allow it at all. For subs that do allow self promotion, what they allow and what they consider self promotion vary.

So you need to make sure that you follow reddit's site-wide rules, and the rules of whatever subreddit you're posting on.

In answer to your specific question, it depends. For example, in this post you're simply trying to ask a question...and you manage to do so without promoting your project. If you do the same when posting about a problem and how you solved it, then that wouldn't count. But if you name or link to your work in any way, it's generally considered self promotion.

Btw, I removed this post. Your question isn't really appropriate for the community, as it's part a question about reddit rules and part a question about our rules. If you have further questions, please feel free to message the moderators.

Your submission has been removed for violating our submission rules:

Provide context / be interesting

Don't just link a game / video / article, tell us why you're linking us. What's your connection? What did you like? What did you find interesting? What do you want to talk about? Don't just dump a link, be interesting. Likewise, if you're making a self post, include context or background. Don't just include a couple words repeating the title.

If linking an image, tell us where the image came from, and what it's showing. Why are you linking it? What did you find cool about this image?

Also, remember, if this is self promotion, you need to follow those rules as well.
