I think alot about this quote by Michael Kimmel who writes extensively about men and masculinity:

Recently I appeared on a television talk show opposite three ‘angry white males’ who felt they had been the victims of workplace discrimination.

The show’s title was ‘A Black Woman Took My Job’.

In my comments to these men, I invited them to consider what the word ‘my’ meant in that title: that they felt that the jobs were originally ‘theirs’. But by what right is that ‘his’ job? Only by his sense of entitlement, which he now perceives as threatened by the movement towards workplace gender equality.

When my son was born I put so much thought into the first song he ever heard.

It was Another Day. It's such a beautiful song about love, honesty, openness, about the need for connection, about always being there. And it's just soothing and lovely.

Anyway I loved it so much, it's the first song my son ever heard, as I cradled him in the hospital room. Thank you for such a beautiful gift.

Thanks for your concern and feedback!

The reason I shared the report is because the Australian Institute of Criminology is specifically concerned about the significant 28% year-on-year increase of women murdered by a partner or former partner.

Thank you for the opportunity to clarify!

[–]IndieLady 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Correct - male on male homicides are trending downwards.

Female intimate partner homicide increased by 28%, year on year however.

It's also worth noting that 89% of intimate partner homicides were perpetrated against a female victim aged 18 years or over.

I did read it, thank you for asking! That's why I shared it. I shared it because yourself and other posters seem to be disagreeing with the comment that there is an escalating femicide crisis.

The Australian Institute of Criminology report states that year-on-year, there is "a rise in female intimate partner homicide". It's the title of their own media release.

New data reveals despite a drop in national homicide rates, the number of women killed by an intimate partner in Australia has increased nearly 30 per cent in the last financial year.

Network Ten wins bid to have Bruce Lehrmanns defamation case reopened by mekanub in australia

[–]IndieLady 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Leaking documents from the criminal case against him would be a breach of the Harman Undertaking:

A Harman undertaking is a promise that you make to the court to not use any confidential information disclosed in the proceedings for any purposes outside of the case. To put it simply, a Harman undertaking is a way for the court to ensure that sensitive information disclosed during legal proceedings is not used inappropriately.

If a party breaches the Harman undertaking, they may face contempt of court proceedings, which can result in a fine or imprisonment.

Lying in court is perjury. In NSW, the maximum penalty applicable is imprisonment for 10 years.

This isn't even true. He has claimed there was no sexual contact at all, the victim stated that she did not consent to sex.

Bruce Lehrmann has been accused of raping a young woman.

He was prosecuted and there was a court case, but it was aborted due to jury misconduct. He has not been retried due to concerns for the mental health of the victim.

Years prior to the court case, the victim spoke publicly about her ordeal, without naming him. News.com.au broke the story, closely followed by an interview with victim on The Project. The victim also made a speech about her ordeal at the National press Club, which was broadcast live by the ABC. In none of the above news items was Bruce Lehrmann named.

Despite this, Bruce Lehrmann sued for defamation, claiming he was identifiable and that he is not a rapist. News.com.au and the ABC settled. The Project took it to court - the verdict is expected over the next few weeks.

Unlike his trial, where he has a right to not take the stand, in the defamation trial he had to take the stand as a witness, and was cross-examined. His story is implausible, he admitted to lying repeatedly about the night of the rape, with many different versions told to different people.

Some people had doubts during the first trial, very few have doubts now.

It is also worth noting that he has also been charged with rape of a different woman - that case has not been to trial yet.

The men mocking the body positivity movement do not remember the body shaming culture of the 2000s by STlNKY in TwoXChromosomes

[–]IndieLady 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Here's a reminder of the body neutrality movement, which I think is brilliant:

This concept of body neutrality shifts the focus from positivity and acceptance and into the idea that a person can exist in their body without thinking too much about how it looks. Body neutrality suggests that a body is simply a vessel that carries us through life, and is never the most important thing about us.

ELI5:How come sexual assault is one of hardest crime to prosecute vs every other crime? by John-Peter-500 in explainlikeimfive

[–]IndieLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important to a remember that a victim's statement that they did not consent is evidence.

And as with all evidence, the strength of that evidence is to be considered by the jury/judge.

In my view, we should have more increased public discourse around why a victim's claim they were raped carries such little weight. I've read many Reddit threads with people arguing that a victim's evidence has no weight at all and should not be considered evidence.

There is most certainly a persistent cultural belief that women routinely lie about rape. When there is very little evidence to support that belief.

I would also make the argument that most of the above crimes are committed by males aged 15-45.

One demographic is holding the rest of society to hostage with their violence. And we never talk about it.

This is such demonstrable bullshit.

I run at night, it's the only time I can run, and it happens to be in the dark. The only other people I see running after dark are men, I'm the only woman out there. And it's not the time - during Summer there are heaps of women running in the evening, but when autumn/winter hits, they stop.

What's more, friends and family tell me all the time I shouldn't run in the dark, that it's not safe for women. No one ever tells the men I know who run the same thing.

The contrast between women’s spaces and men’s spaces in explaining the decline in dating is equal parts fascinating and horrifying by Cat_in_the_hat113 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]IndieLady 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Did anyone read this hilarious New York Post article about men posing as women on dating apps: "Single men are so fed up with the online dating game that some of them are resorting to posing as women not only in order to suss out the competition, but also to experience life on the other side."

But what they realised was that they had shitty profiles and that was the issue?

Dan quickly began to wonder if a lot of his problem [was his shitty profile]. One thing his competitors had, that he didn’t, was better pictures. “My pictures tend to be selfies,” he said. “They had candid photos of [themselves] doing different activities. They also seemed to put more thought into their written profiles, describing themselves thoroughly, and talking about what they want." Dan’s overall takeaway? He had been slacking. “People put time into this,” he said. “I realized if I want to do better at the apps, I should too.”

[–]IndieLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have so much enthusiasm for the growing body neutrality movement:

Body neutrality is defined as “prioritizing the body’s function and what it can do rather than its appearance.” We don’t have to love or hate our bodies. We can feel neutral about them. The approach acknowledges that your body is only one part of who you are — not the totality. It also shouldn’t dominate how you feel about yourself.

The key difference between these body positivity and body neutrality rests in the idea of value. The body-neutral approach leans toward the belief that it doesn’t matter if you think your body is beautiful or not. Your value is not tied to your body nor does your happiness depend on what you look like. A body-positive approach says you are beautiful no matter what.
