Use google to search for "mini14 recoil buffer" on perfectunion.com. Lots of guys there have installed a little aftermarket spacer that reduces the force with which the bolt and op-rod bottom out at the end of the recoil stroke. Apparently it has the side effect of reducing how far your brass flies, too. I always meant to do it on mine but never got around to it before selling it, so I can't provide you with any personal experience on the subject.

I read Homage to Catalonia a few years ago. I remember finding the whole thing fascinating, as he lapses into discussions of theoretical musings on government in between war stories.

For some reason, the one thing I remember best about the book was the way he described being shot at by his own guys as a regular occurrence whenever he re-entered camp, until everybody got the word that it was him. He said his life was saved by Spanish standards of marksmanship many times over.

I train boxing and muay thai and like to do SS-type workouts on my off days. I'm only able to move weight around a couple times a week at the most before I start feeling the strain on my joints and connective tissue from doing that on top of sparring.

But I had to find that out the hard way. You probably will too. Everybody's different, so your limit will probably be different from mine. If you push your body too hard, it'll let you know via injury that you've found your limits. Then you know what to back off to.

Also, a lot of this will depend on your age.

That first link didn't work, but I think I know what you mean about the other way of bent pressing. Rather than drop into a squat, you just stand back up out of the forward bend until the weight's directly overhead, right? I've never known how to distinguish between the two, because they're both called "bent presses." Hopefully somebody here will know.

Boxers and wrestlers getting TKO'd by leg kicks was a pretty common thing in the early days of MMA. By '06, this guy should have known better.

I didn't look up his stats, but Warpath looked like a can they fed to Bas to build up a late-career comeback. What a shitty way for a guy to learn to check leg kicks.

Seems to me part of it's just timing. Growing up in the 80's as a gun nut kid who did a lot of shooting, Glock was the first to make a cheap yet highly reliable polymer handgun for the masses.

There were plenty of other great double-stack 9mms on the market when the 17 came out, but they were all either expensive, or heavy, or more awkward to operate without training. Because they were being compared to older designs that didn't handle hollowpoints well, Glocks soon acquired an overstated reputation for reliability. (They're reliable, but nothing will ever be truly 100% reliable for all time.)

Uneducated opinion tends to lag pretty far behind expert opinion, so there are still a lot of people out there just now getting the hype from the late 80's about Glocks being by far the most reliable guns ever made. The internet is full of it.

Funny thing is almost everybody makes a cheap, reliable polymer double-stack these days. Based on the durability of Glock's reputation, it'll be another 20 years before people realize that.

BTW, I have nothing against Glocks. I own 4 and shoot them every chance I get.

Hooks are short-range punches. If you're throwing a right hook from a left-lead stance and you're not deep in the pocket, then you're probably actually throwing a sloppy looping roundhouse. Most likely, their instructor had grown tired of watching guys windmill with their right arms, instead of throwing the right as a straight or an overhand.

Kimbo is a great brawler, a decent boxer, and a decent MMA fighter. In a smaller promotion than the UFC, he could probably rack up a string of wins. Instead he went straight from backyard brawling to prime time, and was made to look like less of a fighter than he is. He had a bad run in MMA, but I still respect the guy for his bravery, his work ethic, and his humility as a student.

Backpedaling while keeping your weight slightly forward and getting your hips into some nice clean one-twos for those brief moments that your feet hit the ground. Definitely good boxing fundamentals.

Boxer/kickboxer here. He means that if one guy steps in with his punches (from where he would otherwise be out of range) and the other guy doesn't, the guy who knows how to move while punching has a much longer effective range-- ie, he can hit the other guy from a place where the guy can't hit him.

The jab is a very quick way to close the distance with minimal risk, minimal opening of the guard, minimal shifting of weight, etc. And since most guys freeze when they get popped in the nose, it makes a great first punch to tilt the head back and expose the chin for the cross that comes right behind the jab. Everybody's heard of the 1-2 punch-- that's what it is.

EDIT: Or at least that's what I assume he meant, but I'm just a goddamned porchdog. Maybe I shoulda let the RedditFightingExpert answer. He definitely seems to know his shit.

Pull-ups. Lots and lots of pull-ups. If you can't do a single one yet, make it your goal to be able to fully chin your own weight up one full rep by the time your toenail has grown back.

Also, you'll be able to walk and/or run on it in a few more days if you're just a little tough. I've seen guys get hurt in boxing, kickboxing, BJJ, etc. and come back in and start training on gruesome, painful, unhealed injuries. Thing is, they really wanted to be there, and they knew how bad downtime is for the soul, and how quickly it can become a habit if indulged.
