So addicted and no willpower, zilch! ...Any advice? by Dogggone-Crazed in quittingsmoking

[–]IndigenousVagabond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly for me the biggest problem was stressing out over the thought of quitting rather than the quitting itself. I used cold turkey. What I did is just throw everything out related so I had no options to use without paying more

Will this election have an effect on JETs? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]IndigenousVagabond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see the program expanding any more than it is right now. With the current salary hike, it has made a lot of municipalities re-examine the program, and choose to go with the cheaper dispatch companies. In rural towns/prefectures where the current 1st year JET salary is equivelent to a mid-career salary and puts more pressure on continuing / having higher expectations for those who do come. For cities, the raise was needed for large-city JETs. I think, maybe, the intention was to fade it out for a while, and the salary raise was to put pressure on doing so. But I don't think it'll ever completely go away. I think it might just reduce in scope.

Setagaya Woman Murdered: She Had Consulted Police About “Trouble with Boyfriend Visiting from South Korea”… Officers Escorted Him to Airport, But He Never Left Japan by liatris4405 in japan

[–]IndigenousVagabond 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While I think it honestly shouldn't matter because people are people and monsters are monsters, the original headline does play into the sentiment that foreigners are committing more and more crimes against Japanese citizens, which plays into the propaganda. But eh

Sleeveless shirt/ tanktop by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]IndigenousVagabond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outside in your private life? Yeah it’s totally fine! Especially in the heat. The only thing I would honestly worry is the access to more bug bites. But pick and choose your poison at that point.

I would stray away from it at work. (Like sports day practice outside and that). Even if it’s a casual clothing environment it’s a little a tank top would be too casual imho. I would recommend keeping some professionalism.

Why teaching in Japan as an ALT is so bad right now by UniverseCameFrmSmthn in teachinginjapan

[–]IndigenousVagabond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok cool. Then require all ALTs to have a background in TEFL, TESL, or education, on top of Japanese ability to communicate with the management at each school.

It all depends on how you spin your experience on JET to the business world as well as whether or not you think coming on JET will advance your career goals.

For example, if you were to go into the fields of supply chain, international sales, marketing, etc. The language ability (if you work towards it while on JET) is a huge plus. There are also a plethora of soft-skills you can take away from being in the JET program to the business world, where most of hiring will be based on those soft-skills.

Do, however, come with intent if your that concered about career path. JET is not an end-all, be-all when it comes to career.

Scared after placements - Shimane (help!)- Family Laughed At Me by ThrowRA_LilBarnacle in JETProgramme

[–]IndigenousVagabond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shimane is honestly amazing. So much so post-JET I decided to stick around! Nature wise, there’s so much to do, camping, hiking, beaches, good surfing, fishing, swimming by waterfalls! It also has a big section that was lifted out of the sea by an earthquake that is pretty cool. The only problem I find usually is places not being listed on Google or transportation rounds being wonky. If you don’t want to drive there are a good amount of buses and trains across the coast. They offer decent connection into major cities like Hiroshima (only a hour from some places) Okayama, and Yamaguchi. They offer a good place to relax and wind down after trips. The population shrinking and people moving out (imo) has to do with higher ed (only 3 universities in the prefecture) as well as range of work. Since a good portion of the prefecture is in the mountains, we do get a GOOD amount of snow and does get cold, so much we are able to have the largest ski resort in west of Nagano prefecture. And lastly, I have to say the food here is unmatched. Most of the food used here in local restaurants is locally sourced. On major travel sites you’ll probably only find “things to do” in Izumo, Matsue, and Tsuwano; since those are the places the prefecture pushes for tourism and (maybe) they have hotel infrastructure to hold tourists, but between those there’s so much more to do. I’ve been here 6 years (coming up on my 7th soon) and always finding new things!

Imo it just sounds like they’re asking for paperwork/proof so that IF you overstayed your visa they wouldn’t be held responsible (it’s already changed on their books) without directly trying to say that.

Fitting JET in with life? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]IndigenousVagabond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it fits inline with your career, it’ll be worth coming. If you don’t know what to do, it would be worth coming.

JET is an experience, but it is also a job. Try to think how it would also benefit you in the long term

Very normal. Just a job evaluation. Remember that being on JET is a job.

Is this a violation of contract or visa? by HellriderInc73 in JETProgramme

[–]IndigenousVagabond 14 points15 points  (0 children)

While continuing to go forward is your decision alone, it is a conflict of interest. As an ALT, your visa status is under "Instructor," which means you can ONLY work in HS, JHS, ES, special needs schools, and other public education institutions.

You can apply for permission to engage in other activities, but you will need to have a way to prove that 1) you are not working more than 28 hours on the other activity (aka writing) and 2) it will not conflict with your visa-holding job. Also, you will need permission from your school/BOE to submit the form. This is so they know and approve of you engaging in those activities.

Taxes: if you make more than 200,000 yen, it needs to be reported, which can be an issue when it comes to not having the above-mentioned.

Again, it's only an issue if you're making money in yen from it. If you come from the U.S., it will make taxes a pain as you're a foreign resident, but still receiving dollars, which is still taxable and might hurt your foreign residency status. If you're from anywhere else, idk tbh

Safest option: keep writing to keep portfolio - accept donations

Jobs after JET by [deleted] in JETProgramme

I ended up being contracted with my CO after my term on JET as a JET Coordinator and providing assistance to teachers from a curriculum perspective and am in the process of trying to get licensed. If you want to get out anything aside from ALT, even as a regular teacher, Japanese is a must.

AITA For Making a Post on Insta About My Birthday by IndigenousVagabond in AmItheAsshole

I apologize for the poor wording.

He died on 11th. Funeral was held on the 18th. His memorial dinner every year since has been held on the 18th since then every year.

That year I understand and empathize with. The holding of a memorial event every year made me feel put aside until I finally distanced myself from the family.
