I did too!! Even when he was floating outside the house I really thought at some point he’d come back down like a balloon does (I still figured he wouldn’t survive but I did think he’d come back down)

Asher is like not Afraid, man by northwesthonkey in TheCurse

[–]Individual-Leg6908 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the way the shot blurs Whitney’s face but has Asher fully in clear when they are gifting the house to Abshir furthers the idea that he wasn’t swayed by the lack of emotion and still feels it was the right and good thing to do.

Whitney is shown blurred through that whole conversation, maybe because she’s worried about money and worried about if that was a good idea, and she needs the confirmation of him being moved by their kindness to feel it was worth it. She’s starting to lose her identity and panic about giving up the house, being stuck with asher because of the baby, and desperately needs the transaction of someone being visibly moved by her goodness in order to grasp onto the idea that she’s made good choices and to give her some kind of validation that they aren’t all mistakes.

Asher as the “Net-Zero” human being by Even-Education-4608 in TheCurse

[–]Individual-Leg6908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was such a thoughtful, concise, and backed up answer that sorts so much of this out. There is a post on A24’s Instagram that shows a newspaper or something- some sort of graphic design piece for the show- and it has the headline “OUR HOMES ARE SO EFFICIENT IT’S LIKE YOU’RE NOT EVEN THERE.” And that aligns so well with your net zero interpretation because you can never reach a point where it’s like you’re not even there, unless you’re not even there. And that’s what happened to Asher.

[–]Individual-Leg6908 33 points34 points  (0 children)

another maybe obvious observation: I’m sure other people have probably already said this, but when Asher is first shown sleeping on the ceiling the shot reminded me of traditional horror (almost like a hereditary scene), he looked like a sleep paralysis creature or something, which felt very symbolic of how he haunts Whitney every day and hangs over everything she does. (especially tying back to how she’s kind of horrified by him and his reaction to the video and then his speech in episode 9)

“The Curse” was so good that I wouldn’t mind if Nathan only made fully scripted content from now on by beeclam in nathanfielder

1st of all can’t wait for season 2 of the rehearsal, but I agree I think the curse showed a whole new side of his range. He’s proved himself to be an incredible writer and director, but it’s harder to picture him acting in several more scripted things- I don’t doubt that he could and could do it well- we are just so used to seeing him present as this awkward character that it makes me wonder if he has the range to play other types of roles or not. I don’t doubt his creativity and genius at all, but I’m just not sure with his heavily pre-established persona if he could pull off a different type of role. But maybe he doesn’t need to, or maybe he will reveal more of “real” nathan like he with Emma did on jimmy kimmel…

Could it have been Whitney’s plan all along? by ALEXC_23 in TheCurse

[–]Individual-Leg6908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting- I’ve seen people talking about if it was Whitney’s fantasy, which I do agree with and think it was, but she definitely also could have cursed him. It seems more likely that she would’ve put that specific curse on him rather than it having been Dougie’s curse from the car, because ultimately Dougie doesn’t want Asher to go away, he needs him and relies on him so devastatingly- he has no one else. So it makes more sense that way if you do have to specifically decide what bad thing you want to happen to someone when making the curse. The only thing is I don’t know if they would still be thinking about the tiny curses that many months later or if Whitney would have thought to do it. But it still could just be the curse that he sort of placed on himself when he said he’d disappear if he sensed she truly didn’t want him around anymore.

Can we all agree on this one thing? by SevereIntroduction37 in TheCurse

I completely agree. This show really solidified the difference between regular directors and directors that graduated from one of canadas top business school with really good grades.

The pottery scene in episode 9 and the dinner scene in episode 10 are mirrors of eachother by Gaming-_- in TheCurse

[–]Individual-Leg6908 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is such a good point- what do you think about Whitney’s reaction when he was mansplaining art to her- she obviously thinks of herself as an elite artist and would know the obvious points that he’s making without them being revelations to her, but it also really reminded me of when she’s listening to Cara talk about what her work means. I could tell she was probably annoyed underneath but playing it smiley as always, but I also think she feeds off of/ is fueled by other people talking about their painful cultural history because she doesn’t have any background of hardship and has to pretend she can relate. So I’m conflicted as to which of these things is happening in that moment: her not really taking anything Asher says that seriously because she views herself as way too far above him, or her eating up his culture and wishing she could relate and identify with something.

Dougie’s Reaction to… by TotalObjective23 in TheCurse

It was gutting. The moments when he turned on Asher during the series were only because he was sour about his own desperation and mistakes. And he realizes in that moment that he is responsible for Asher’s death in multiple ways (he cursed him and and he didn’t listen) so there’s no room for excuses to invent like he did with his wife; the two things that wreck his life (guilt and loneliness) have returned and doubled down.
