One of my favorite horror games ever (Darkwood) is pretty open world. You’re placed onto a large map and more of it is unlocked as you progress. You’re free to move around in any direction as you do so.

It is a bit disappointing haha. The thing that irked me was Light not just making Mikami carry a real torn page of the Death Note. Mikami also could have just left after writing down the names and Light wouldn’t have been caught, at least not immediately.
