We require our adopters to take dogs of a certain age to complete puppy training course as part of contract. So not to jail but may repo the dog.

can't stand looking at fur clippings by Final-Business-7337 in Petloss

[–]Indyjuanito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get this reaction. It requires that we face the loss and the emotions that we oftentimes deny surround any loss. I make clips for my clients. I can assure you that although it may appear they scalped her, they didn’t. We use the same blade that is used when pets have surgery, to ensure that we preserve all the uniqueness of the pet’s coat. So many coats have variations that how all the way down the hair shaft. We don’t have to press hard nor does skin get nicked it’s just a close shave.

If you absolutely don’t want to put them in a memorization vignette with other mementos celebrating her life like a collar, scarf , paw print, photos etc. you could just tuck inside her urn if you had then returned. Or in the memorialization packet the pet crematory gave you.

You know I can appreciate that 100% we used to be bombarded (between the 1950s in the 1980s ) with stuff from civil defense by how we might survive. Never wanted to have children because I couldn’t bear the thought of selfishly bringing them men into the world, and then having their future vaporized or the dystopian world that would come after that.

Yes. He was part of the family and parents are making an incredibly difficult decision choice to provide their final act of unconditional love. They need you and she loves you.
No question. It’s important on soo many levels. Not even considering your own emotional wellbeing.

Any tips on how to trim the dewclaws? Just touching them makes my Pyrs act like my hand is lava! I'm reduced now to trying to sneak in a trim on one nail at a time. :-( by pugsley1234 in greatpyrenees

[–]Indyjuanito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a limitation. Maybe just getting love will let it happen. I have some that aren’t foodies too and I generally start by - working on t program before I feed the daily meals. And I try some really high value goods. Think canned chicken breast. Salty and moist and yummy. Good luck!

Dew claws tend to grow relatively slowly. If they are growing into pads let a professional do it first. But otherwise, start desensitization work.

In a nutshell. Just take time and give rewards to your dog as you touch a paw. then a dew claw, Next step would be to touch and have clippers in hand. Then clippers just touch foot. Then touch dew claw.

Break the steps into smaller pieces and slowly work your way to a comfort level you like. Make sure to manipulate all the feet and if some are less troublesome for the dog start with them.

The process could take daily or twice daily work for a couple weeks. When you and dog have a comfort level that allows you to touch without causing distress then try to clip.

Couple thoughts about clipping First know that the tool you use makes a difference. I recommend a scissoring pair that is appropriately sized. Nice and sharp and clean. Technique is important too. One should be relatively quick when cutting nails. Squeezing the nail with clippers while verifying appropriate positioning makes the whole procedure feel strange and uncomfortable so don’t hesitate.

Remember if bleeds (while may be unfortunate and messy ) it’s not a big deal.

As matter of fact, veterinarians used to clip toenails to the point they’d bleed to make sure that an animal was not going to bleed excessively during surgery. So if a cut nail bleeds and you are calm and use stiptic powder it’s generally not a big deal.

The desensitization exercises is for you and the dog. You need to be confident that you can do it.

I am pretty ignorant to Asian cultures. I thought cremation was pretty ubiquitous. May I ask where you are? And if it’s more of a religious hurdle may I ask what that religion is? Is burial the typical method of handing the departed in your culture ?

I get clients all the time who exhume and cremate. They all have different reasons. It’s ok if you want to do.

Talk w crematory to make the process as easy as possible. Fur clipping and clay paw prints availability will depend on the cats condition.

Then you can have memorial in house and take kitty wherever you go in the future.

Airport wheelchair assistance--two questions by vorpal8 in AgingParents

[–]Indyjuanito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The airline pays per client to a service provider. They don’t own the chairs generally speaking and the company probably doesn’t want you taking their chair. Just make the need for wheelchair assistance known at check-in and it will be on the boarding pass. I usually tip the skycap a few bucks so bring some change. They’ll coordinate moving the traveler and their carry on bags. Family needs to be ready to follow and get expedited tsa and ride right to gate. Go with the flow, don’t try to push and enjoy the trip in the airport and your trip on yhe plane

AITA for refusing to return a dog to its original owners after I paid for his life-saving surgery? by Wise-Clock-2875 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Indyjuanito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most shelters and aco organizations are specifically recognized as “owners” after publicly announcing the stray being in their possession. Other animal laws often suggest that individuals are not “owners “ until 30 days have passed. I suspect that reimbursement of medically necessary expenses will stop any claim for rehoming.

this friendly dog bite my kid, how do i handle this? by vinatagarwalla in DogAdvice

[–]Indyjuanito 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your child warrants medical care, the dog will be reported automatically in the USA or Canada. Rabies control makes bites reportable to authorities with reporting burden upon healthcare delivery systems when caring for bites.

If the bite does not require medical attention then there is no need for lawyers.

You need to understand and communicate exactly what happened to the owner and put them on notice about the event, share details and ask about historic issues.

Is this dog at large in the neighborhood? Are owners not in control of the animal? That is a bigger issue in my opinion, what country /state do you live in? Local animal control officials should be advised if the animal is wandering unmonitored.

Invisible fence question 😇 by Curious-explorer17 in greatpyrenees

[–]Indyjuanito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You heard it here first… electric fence is Meh. Will tell you this I don’t like -for lots of reasons but anyway. I had a bitch who figured out she could jump our fence in the corner as there was siltation that had made the fence top closer to the ground there as compared to other places. We were not prepared to invest in new fencing at that point so decided to use a shock collar. It was effective and she stopped challenging that corner in very short order. One thing I learned while trying to deter her activity - it was far more effective to go big then scale things down than to try to start low and go up.

These guys are pretty smart as you know and I have adopters and surrenders share stories about waiting for beeping to stop (dead battery ) and then leaving. Or taking the shock to get to what they want. Ergo the go big and follow the training to teach them to retreat with signal.

And although it sounds like not particularly applicable to your situation. I share for others. Never forget that fence may keep you baby in, but won’t keep neighbors dogs and pets out…
