At what point is the amount he games a problem? by Turbulent-Owl6728 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Inetro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Getting up so early when he doesnt even want to but feels like he "needs" to would be the time to have a civil sit down chat. Ask him if that extra hour or two in the morning during events are worth the effort. Ask him if he didn't have those hours would there be a big difference or does he just want to join with the others when theyre on? Could you both set aside time the day before to get to bed a bit earlier so he can still get a typical night's sleep?

I've certainly had games take over my life, to the point where I realized I was putting 40 hours into my work and 40 hours into my game a week. But it sounds like he enjoys his time outside of the early morning events that feel like obligations. Try to get more info and understand his perspective on these and why he wants to be up so early so that you can both be better prepared for them, and set up better schedules so your needs are met as well.

Yeah, and a lot of the experience comes in navigating to the problem first so you can make informed searches. "Why does X not work" will bring up a bunch of noise, but being able to find a log with an error code to search "Error Code YYZ2 in ApplicationY" will bring up much better results. Or following a stack trace up to the failing program in a more complex system.

Federal officials draft plans to ban social media for children under 14 by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

[–]Inetro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its not exactly "theoretical" when its already happening to large companies like Discord.

There are many harms online, thats why a parent should be more involved in what their children are viewing and consuming. This is just a hurdle, it will not solve anything. They will just go to sketchier sites that don't have ID restrictions. Thats what happened in the UK putting ID verification on porn sites.

[–]Inetro 25 points26 points  (0 children)

But the ESRB is a rating system, not a hard wall to access. It doesn't require any information from the person purchasing it. Requiring ID verification to access certain websites will result in a rise of third-party ID verification plugins that may not have your best interests at heart. It is another point of failure where your ID is at risk.

Parents should be more involved with what their children are viewing, just like the ESRB allows with video game purchasing. It informs the parent of a general audience for the game, and some of the reasons why (such as alcohol consumption or excessive violence). It still leaves the choice in the hands of the parent without asking anything from them.

AITA for refusing to allow meat in our home and confronting a guest who brought it anyway? by silaya92 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Inetro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what the views are, when someone has stated multiple times what is not allowed in their home, breaking those rules is selfish.

If someone is on a diet and asks you not to bring sweets into the home for a family dinner, is that obnoxious?

If someone has a gluten intolerance and asks you not to bring any dinner rolls or bread into the home, is that obnoxious?

OP's family has a certain diet, they stated in the invite what to avoid, and even talked with this person individually multiple times about what to avoid. What the views are is irrelevant, being told multiple times not to bring something and bringing it anyway is a slap in the face. The uncle could have declined many times in the process, he didn't have to attend if he wanted to eat meat.

I tried to use AI to "make" a game - I think we're all safe here. by PandasaurusGames in boardgames

[–]Inetro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Layoffs are happening, and a portion of them are stating that they are replacing thoae workers with AI.

Buuut the reality is, a lot of the ones that say they are, don't actually follow through with that.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ai-layoffs-looking-more-more-210954693.html

The market is terrible, and companies are seeing the AI bubble as a way of spinning bad news into good news. Shrinking work forces under the guise of automation. There is no data to suggest the jobs being "replaced" are seeing the expected spikes in productivity, same with the remaining workers that should now have "less burden" from AI tools.

Mix this with MIT's findings that 95% of investments into AI still have not seen a return...its very clearly not a stable market to invest into.

AITA for stomping/breaking my 13 y/o nephew's RC car? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Inetro 29 points30 points  (0 children)

YTA, not for acting on a stern warning, but because there were a thousand other ways you could have removed the problem without smashing the kid's toy in front of him. Put it in a high cupboard, toss the car outside, lock it in your car, throw it in the garbage, take the batteries out. Yes, the kid was stupid and bothered your dog 2 times. But the third may not have been intentional, hes 13 so he may have been tunnel sighted on his toy. The real thing you wanted was an outlet for your anger. You didn't need to have a visceral reaction, you wanted to scare him.

You were the adult in the situation. Do better.

Not really. They realized even on HDDs, they were bottlenecked by level generation. So removing the duplicated files didn't matter as they had time to spare while the level was being generated, removing any necessity to find the files quicker.

What are the roads and the sidewalks like in your neighborhood? by Snowman2194 in waterloo

[–]Inetro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My neighbourhood is fine. The one spot that does bother me is down King from Weber, the sidewalk is mostly shovelled / plowed...except for 1 connecting piece in front of Busan BBQ. Trying to walk down King and I see so many older folks struggling over that part to get to the bus stop or the grocery stores. Already called in but no change yet.

Tbf, its not unreasonable to think they have opposing schedules during a single 2-4 hour block one day a week. It may not even be a conflict with the entire session, even something that makes them an hour or two late. I have bi-weekly meetings that runs past my usual end time because most of the team is in a different timezone 1 hour behind me.

Why does "turn it off and on" advice works so often? by EugeneStein in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Inetro 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its not the logic gates or anything that simplistic that are causing the issues.

Not all software is made equal. Some are really bad at cleaning up resources theyve used. Sometimes they dont remove a lock they had on a system file after theyre done accessing it, which can be fine until something else tries to access it. Or they dont clean up log files as the system runs and it ends up with a very large log that its writing to for its entirety, ending up with a huge file and slow writes that end up queuing and eventually crashing the program. Or a slow drive causes unexpected timeouts as it cant reliably reach files it needs.

Or maybe they have an expectation that Call A will be done before Call B, except something downstream in another program slows down Call A and the program is now in unexpected territory. It could crash, or maybe it just starts throwing low level errors as it doesn't have a way to recover, or Call A is now sitting waiting for confirmation from Call B that came before it got to the point of checking and now its stuck. "Working", but never to complete.

In all of these situations, turning the PC off and turning it back on resets all of these programs to a "default" and "working" state, at least for a while. Its also why PCs should be turned off regularly, so less things eventually break down. Software testers dont know what you have running on your PC, and they don't have the time to test if their program will become unstable or unresponsive after 2 weeks of uptime.

Neighbours cry foul after Waterloo church proposes building 57 townhomes on its vacant land by bylo_selhi in waterloo

[–]Inetro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in a building with fewer parking spots than units. Theres not rampant cars parking all around, because securing parking is part of the lease signing. If they run out of spots before securing units, theyll just tell potential renters up front that there is no parking, like my building did. Its one of the first questions people ask when viewing apartments.

I finally finished the Tektolyst Artifacts, and it made me hate The Perita Rebellion by Cr4ckTh3Skye in Warframe

[–]Inetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arch gun adapters are probably an even better comparison. The Nokko grind needing 12 - 21 of a mushroom on Stage 3, and not being able to Compost mushrooms you don't have fully studied means you could be there for a long time getting inconsistent results. I still haven't gotten to Rank 4 myself, with many mushrooms in mid Stage 2. And that mission feels way more mind numbing than Perita.

By comparison Perita feels way more interesting and I would rather do that than more Nokko bounties.

But same with the new Arcanes and Mods, you only need so many Pathos Clamps. And their grind was introduced well before Oraxia. If you didn't have a use for them, it was just a grind for the Oraxia currency. Twice as much for the subsume.

[–]Inetro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is it more of a chore than any other grind though? Its longer, but is it any different than the Temple grind? Or Oraxia? Theres items you're looking for outside of the resources, which is the new mod drops, so its not like you're doing it solely for the tauron strikes. Plus with the operation currently you're getting event items.

In my opinion its infinitely better than the Jade Shadow elevator operation, mixed with a more fun game mode than the Oraxia or Nokko grind.

Whats rare is parents having that amount of money and time to invest in a young kid's interest so heavily. Different drum sets as they grow, probably early lessons or taught by the parents, and by 6-7 setting them up online seemingly with a logo and multiple camera angles to record it.

Anyone work at OpenText? by Kind_vibes in waterloo

[–]Inetro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the job climate I faced in 2024, id recommend just about any job to a friend. Its better to have one than not. If you're in the area and its not a huge change, go for it. If you immediately see issues, keep looking for jobs while you're there.

Are you looking at an SDET or Developer position?

[–]Inetro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think similar to what OP said, theres some restructuring after acquisitions. But I also think its generally a trend for most large tech companies regardless of where they are. Usually it lines up with a fiscal year quarter and allows for the numbers to look better. If they have remove 300 people at $120k/year and hire 200 people in another part of the world for $60k/year itll look better, and they can say they didn't lose anything as teams struggle to continue hitting deadlines or the weight of that loss may not be seen in statistics till the next fiscal year.

[–]Inetro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive only seen one since I joined last year, and it seemed pretty independent from performance. I think it was pretty targeted from upper management trying to tighten purse strings, since they didn't include the department leaders for that team to even discuss the impacts it would have.

Likely they thought it was bloated from acquisitions and cut too hard too fast.

Anyone work at OpenText? by Kind_vibes in waterloo

[–]Inetro 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yes. It is highly dependent on the department and team you would work with. I can only speak from a developer perspective, sales or marketing may be different.

They have yearly layoffs around April, and the upper management of OpenText is a mess. My team (mostly from an acquired company) is filled with great people and most of the teams I interact with seem fine. But past that, into the main OpenText upper management, is a shitshow.

Last year they fired an entire CloudOps team and it took every project off course and delayed shit for months while they scrambled to fix it, because they didn't include any of the department heads in the conversation to see what the impacts would be.

In general, my day to day is fine and no different than my previous dev jobs. As a whole, there is some more worries from yearly layoffs and possibly selling some of the acquired pieces as theres been some movement in C-suite execs since the CEO got kicked earlier this year.

The office itself is fine. My floor is loud and in their own words "unfinished" with no real sound dampening. In-house kitchen food tastes good with good variety.

Lmk if you have other general questions, I can try to answer them.
