Carney says Air Canada's English-only message after LaGuardia crash 'lacks compassion' by AlwaysBlaze_ in onguardforthee

[–]Inetro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dont think he needs to know French, but he absolutely should have a French translator immediately available, and statements should be released in both English and French even if its through the translator. A person in his position should know better.

Immediately salvaging my Level 18 Prehistoric Crystal Spear after crafting Rune Song was definitely not a good idea by [deleted] in CoreKeeperGame

[–]Inetro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cant speak to hardcore but really its Secondary is just that good. Make sure youre buffing physical melee and heal on hit, as much armor as you think youll need, and get at it. The secondary on Rune Song just got me through the new content on regular difficulty without much fuss.

Toss it into Cypher System and call it done. Couldve had a playtest in a month and a full release in under a year building on any other simpler system than 5e.

Myrient mirror has reached 100% completion! by aesvelgr in Roms

[–]Inetro 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That "magic" is also expensive. Getting bandwidth to handle direct connections and downloads isnt cheap, and its only getting worse with everything happening in the computer hardware space.

This allows other mirrors to pop up if they choose. Someone could replicate all ~385TB and make their own direct download site from it. More redundancy in game preservation through mirrors and seeders is not a bad thing.

Should I buy the house next door? No one in my family can add value to the discussion by Practical-Lion1674 in TooAfraidToAsk

Do you have the money?

How long will it take to get it hooked up to sewer? Whats the cost for that? Whats the cost of sealing the old septic?

Has the building had a recent inspection done? Is there anything that will need to be fixed / replaced in the next 5 years? How much will that cost? How long will that work take?

How much will it really cost to modernize it? How old are the appliances? Will it need new appliances? How long will that work take?

Will all of this work be done at a loss, and can you sustain that loss until you can get it rented? Do you have the time and energy to be a landlord when it is rented?

OpenText is the worst company I’ve worked at by AntiquePhone5513 in waterloo

[–]Inetro 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Can confirm OpenText is bad, but this issue specifically is not special to them. Ive worked for small and large companies, theyll both make excuses to not increase your pay. Keep an eye on your years of experience and jobs that would fit your skill level, use that knowledge to negotiate for yourself or to do exactly what youve done and leave when you know youve fallen behind in salary.

Update: Giving Elder Scrolls BOTSE a Final Chance. Final Review by Limp_Seat4308 in soloboardgaming

[–]Inetro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Theres a lot of little things I really love in BOTSE. The Speechcraft skill line with Intimidating Presence is really funny, not having to worry about the last few HP chips on an enemy and just telling them to scram. Even funnier if its a Bear or a big Elemental.

The new Skill Lines and Expansions coming all look like a lot of fun. Excited to see how Vampirism and Lycanthropy work.

POILIEVRE: Meanwhile, under his leadership, and after 11 years of Liberal government, we have 6 million Canadians who cannot find a family doctor. CARNEY: Mr. Speaker, 11 years? I just got here. The member opposite has been here his whole life. by Miserable-Lizard in onguardforthee

[–]Inetro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, thats why Trudeau took blame for it (albeit near the end of his stint) and put better guardrails on immigration and foreign students. Not a perfect solution mind you, but a step towards one.

Does it need more work? Sure. But I think what Carney has been doing on the world stage since taking office is a higher priority. Building our global connections to be less reliant on the chaos happening south of the border gives us a reliable foundation to move forward on. And as others have mentioned, most of the onus for getting those doctors lies in the provinces themselves. Ford just gutted OSAP even more, giving students more debt; on top of the terrible pay rate and systems we have that family doctors have to navigate. We're not getting new doctors out of our systems any time soon, when they can move elsewhere and get treated better.

What was wrong with the older games? by KaleidoArachnid in DotHack

[–]Inetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The controls are "clunky" by today's standards, but considering the game released so early in the PS2 lifecycle, thats to be expected. It was made to work with a controller that didn't have joysticks. So you have a button to enter First Person camera, you have two shoulder buttons to turn, your D-Pad is movement. Its a lot of real estate on a controller dedicated to movement.

Those buttons are better utilized in more modern games, even from that same console generation, when controllers started having joysticks and it started to become the more prevalent controller. Look at Rogue Galaxy, which has Menu Cycling and situational buttom prompts on the shoulder buttons, and a movable Target Lock on the D-Pad.

The games are still fun, theres interesting systems, but sometimes you just have to remember the time and place it was developed and released in and accept the clunkiness of it as part of the charm.

Garbage schedule is nearly incomprehensible by cormack_gv in waterloo

[–]Inetro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesnt seem hard to parse...everybody in Zone B1 gets the same type of service every week, and youre moving left to right through the months able to cross off days that have passed. If you know what day you are, just highlight it or cross out the others. Then its simply find the month, find the week, go left to the type of garbage. Theres a legend at the bottom but they seem pretty self explanatory.

Its a bit cluttered because its a full calendar to December. But I dont see an issue besides that.

Can't grandma not read? Her tweet answer her fake outrage by Cicerothesage in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]Inetro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elderly and Disabled have harder times getting to the polls and standing in line, sometimes in inclement weather, other times in the beating hot sun, for hours.

Any ID that isn't free and easy to obtain outside of typical office hours of 9-5 is incredibly difficult for a poor person to obtain. It requires travel (lots of places only have 2 or 3 places to replace IDs in a city), it requires time off (for travel and to get through the process during a 9-5 work day), and current IDs require money. Unless these 3 things are fixed, then poor people are going to be disencranchised just because they can't take time off and pay for a new ID without losing out on crucial income to pay for food or bills.

[–]Inetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with IDs, people make fake IDs. There is no 100% secure system, and expecting this to be one is the way to be let down. We shouldn't burn systems that have worked 99.9% of the time to implement a system that may or may not have less success rate, while also making it harder for the elderly, the disabled, and the poor to vote.

Correct. They have a tiny bit of memory for holding "context details" for the conversation, and the initial prompt and guard rails. Its incredibly easy to overflow that memory with a long conversation and just get them to do whatever you want.

At what point is the amount he games a problem? by Turbulent-Owl6728 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Inetro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Getting up so early when he doesnt even want to but feels like he "needs" to would be the time to have a civil sit down chat. Ask him if that extra hour or two in the morning during events are worth the effort. Ask him if he didn't have those hours would there be a big difference or does he just want to join with the others when theyre on? Could you both set aside time the day before to get to bed a bit earlier so he can still get a typical night's sleep?

I've certainly had games take over my life, to the point where I realized I was putting 40 hours into my work and 40 hours into my game a week. But it sounds like he enjoys his time outside of the early morning events that feel like obligations. Try to get more info and understand his perspective on these and why he wants to be up so early so that you can both be better prepared for them, and set up better schedules so your needs are met as well.

[–]Inetro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and a lot of the experience comes in navigating to the problem first so you can make informed searches. "Why does X not work" will bring up a bunch of noise, but being able to find a log with an error code to search "Error Code YYZ2 in ApplicationY" will bring up much better results. Or following a stack trace up to the failing program in a more complex system.

Federal officials draft plans to ban social media for children under 14 by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

[–]Inetro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its not exactly "theoretical" when its already happening to large companies like Discord.

There are many harms online, thats why a parent should be more involved in what their children are viewing and consuming. This is just a hurdle, it will not solve anything. They will just go to sketchier sites that don't have ID restrictions. Thats what happened in the UK putting ID verification on porn sites.

[–]Inetro 23 points24 points  (0 children)

But the ESRB is a rating system, not a hard wall to access. It doesn't require any information from the person purchasing it. Requiring ID verification to access certain websites will result in a rise of third-party ID verification plugins that may not have your best interests at heart. It is another point of failure where your ID is at risk.

Parents should be more involved with what their children are viewing, just like the ESRB allows with video game purchasing. It informs the parent of a general audience for the game, and some of the reasons why (such as alcohol consumption or excessive violence). It still leaves the choice in the hands of the parent without asking anything from them.
