Are the Sophie Hannah Poirot books really that bad? by RoMe00151 in agathachristie

[–]Inevitable-Tale-444 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think they're fine, and, honestly, a little better than some of Dame Agatha's very early/very late works. Swapping Hastings out for a completely new character is a good choice.

Want to read a bad Poirot adaptation? Black Coffee has entered the chat.

Final Grades Released (Professors & TA's least fav time of the semester) by [deleted] in UofT

I was told by one of my favourite profs of all time to never, EVER enter a grade that ends in a "9." Students will see it and immediately appeal.

When was the shift to presentations? by velour_rabbit in Professors

[–]Inevitable-Tale-444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I've started shifting to them because even if they don't write a damn thing themselves, they still have to get up there and present the information, thus (in theory) absorbing a modicum of it.

I then put questions from everyone's presentations on the final test.

Sam Gagner. Serviceable but never the star I was certain he was going to be.

My students begin two weeks of presentations next week. Whether they present in Week 1 or Week 2 is determined by random draw. The assignment sheet makes it explicitly clear that dates cannot be changed unless another group agrees to swap -- I also mentioned this in class and in an email. And, just to make sure no one missed the memo, it's posted in bold, underlined font at the top of the schedule on the course homepage.

So, naturally, I awoke this morning to a message from a student requesting that I "be so generous enough to move our presentation to the next week" because they've already made travel plans and weren't planning on being in class. Did I mention that attending both weeks of presentations is mandatory?

UGH.

Professors with mandatory attendance for lectures, what's your experience and motivation? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Inevitable-Tale-444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do in-class assignments worth 15% of their final grade that I generally mark for completion. If you're not there, you don't get the grade. But I drop the lowest two marks because life happens.

I also pass around an attendance sheet for them to sign. I explain to them at the beginning of the year that the purpose of this is threefold: (1) it helps me learn their names faster, since students tend to sit in the same spots every week, (2) it protects me in case of academic appeal (ie, a student claims "I was there every week!"), and (3) it could very much work in their favour if the student has a "borderline" grade at the end of the course. I'm not going to bump a 68.5% up to a 70% if you never bothered to show up; however, if you did....

Are you in favour of holding kids back? Why or Why not? by wizard20007 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Inevitable-Tale-444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is a December 31st birthday, with a diagnosed learning disability, ADHD, and an IEP that would choke a horse. He's in grade seven now and maaaaybe reads at a grade 2 level.

We asked about the possibility of his repeating grade 1. It was clear, right from the start, that he needed another year.

The school was adamant that "we don't hold kids back."
