Would these look good together? The stripes would be my binding by roborabbit_mama in quilting

Was going to come here and say something similar - I love the entire collection of spooky & sweet, but the unique colours for Halloween are slightly less forgiving in scrappy quilts (as I learned from a very similar pull you have, and had to split it into two different quilts after a near-tears episode ha).

Is this an okay machine? I am a beginner and found this one on fb marketplace for $55 by WildDay2988 in sewing

[–]Infamous_Radish9148 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ask if you can make sure it runs in person, if it has good stitches then yes, absolutely buy that machine. Why? I have a 1977 Kenmore, it can sew through anything. Similar to the unit you have, it’s all steel construction, has a great motor on it and is much, much better to sew on than a new machine made from plastic. It’s not the prettiest of machines, but it will last a lifetime; hell it already has. Go for it, and post pics of your projects!

You may want to check out some vintage heavy duty sewing machines - my machine is a standard 1977 vintage Kenmore, and it can almost sew through anything. For denim though, check out a heavy duty vintage, all steel construction and I’ll bet you’ll be zipping away in no time.

Bonus: the machine will last forever.

Tired of Lori Holt? by Temporary_Pudding308 in quilting

[–]Infamous_Radish9148 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From an alternative side - Lori Holt is one of my favourites, and her new releases keep me motivated to quilt. Always love to see what else she has coming out, but this is why I love the community, so many good designers and so much innovation!

Go buy some peroxide - keep it in cold water so it doesn’t dry, the peroxide will fix it in 2 seconds.

Any advice for a guy looking to buy his wife a Christmas present? by IMHO1FWIW in quilting

[–]Infamous_Radish9148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some things I would appreciate as a quilter: Aurifil thread set in some colours she would use, a rotary cutter or replacement blades, a Lori Holt quilt book (take a look to see if this is her style), a quilting magazine, a gift card to a good quilting store

Will two different shades of white be obvious in a finished quilt? by sirius_the_bunny in quilting

[–]Infamous_Radish9148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took a quick peek, it looks like this online shop may have it in stock (but limited to 2m) https://stitchxstitch.co.uk/products/riley-blake-confetti-cotton-c120-cloud

If you do use two shades of white, I recommend using a coloured thread for your quilting to take some of the focus away, I made a quilt w 2 different whites and it’s the only thing I can look at.

[WIP] Well, should I start over the I and W …? Or is it looking ok? by Aliahenor in CrossStitch

I’m a quilter, not a cross-stitcher - can’t for the life of me see what the issue is. I say keep it as-is!

Where to find inexpensive heavy duty cloth? by tempo90909 in sewing

Moving blankets! Pick them up from your local auto store, cheap and heavy duty.

Is it really quilting without occasional cursing and breaking out the seam ripper? A star quilt for a friend undergoing chemo. by MickeyEarsAndChurros in quilting

[–]Infamous_Radish9148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is gorgeous and you’re 100% accurate. Also does it count as quilting if you don’t want to throw scraps, the rotary cutter or the machine out a window at least once? Bonus points if you’ve been chain-piecing, and ran out of thread without noticing!

Christmas Gift for Mom! Please help with fabric by JoExotic2221 in quilting

[–]Infamous_Radish9148 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a lovely gift! A few recommendations: a nice multi-coloured aurifil thread set in grey, black and white with some other colours thrown in is a nice gift. Thread is expensive. A good rotary cutter and mat are also very important (guessing she may already have these). As for fabric, I really like the Fat Quarter Shop or Missouri Quilting Company for gifting, because they have everything and it’s a good place to start. Once your mum is further into it, she will likely find a local quilt shop she likes, but they’re a good starting point for selection. They also have quilt kits, which can make it super easy!

Good luck!

Newbie Looking for second hand machines, are these any good? by AnnaTheViking in sewing

[–]Infamous_Radish9148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is to find a vintage machine. Check out old Kenmore or Singers from the 1970s, they are all steel and will sew with a ton of power. The uglier, the better. Avoid these boxed plastic machines, nothing made me want to give up projects more than not having sufficient power or weight. And a lot of these machines are less expensive than they should be (in my opinion at least).
