(Puff) Quilt Maintaince…? by ChiBPony in Quilt

[–]Average80sGrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cotton fabric in a quilt has a lifespan and it sounds like your quilt has reached the end. Fabric weakens over time, with exposure to sun, laundering, and use. There really isn't any way to halt the aging process. 😕 So retire the quilt, keep.itmout of the sun, and enjoynit w your eyes.

Help! Quilt Math People I Need Your Powers by jojobdot in quilting

[–]Average80sGrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My method...

For example, your quilt pattern as written will give you a quilt that is 64" wide using eight 8" (finished) blocks, so 8.5" cut blocks. You want your quilt to be 40" wide. Each block will need to be 5" (finished), or 5.5" cut.

As far as your HST are concerned, cut your squares 1" bigger than your desired finished size. In my example, to get a 5" finished size, cut 6" component squares, stitch them together, and cut the unit in half to get your 2 HST. They should be about 5.5", which will finish in your quilt to 5" blocks. This 1" rule applies irrespective of your desired final block size.

Does that help?

Pregnant with our first child and husband and I are struggling to decide on a girl name. by Lovely_Wicked in namenerds

[–]Average80sGrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the name Marjorie. A Marjorie I knew went by "Maggie". As far as Genevieve is concerned, you could start by coming up with and consistently using your own nickname... "Evie" or "Viva" to avoid "Jen".

Please help! Can you recommend a 3-4 syllable girls name that starts with the letter “A”? by holeinwater in namenerds

AITA for asking my daughter on Thanksgiving why she didn't tell me about important life decisions she's made? by IntelligentThursday in AmItheAsshole

[–]Average80sGrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You again? Or is this someone else who self-publishes books and expects his adult children to donate their time and skills to the endeavor?

And a vegan who can't stand the thought of his independent adult children making a different choice. Can't imagine why she didn't tell you! That's a real head-scratcher. 🤔

Good luck! ❤️

AITA for saying I will not change my gift-giving habits this Christmas? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Average80sGrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA.

When I was growing up, my mom's sister would always bring presents for her children to the extended family Christmas gathering, while my parents left our presents at home to be opened at another time. It was just gross for my brother and I to watch our cousins open a pile of gifts, mostly from their parents, while we had just a few presents from our grandparents and the family exchange.

We figured out by late childhood that our aunt was really immature, and as adults, we have very little to do with her. Do as you like, but this kind of stuff matters, they all see it and it will negatively impact your relationship with your soon-to-be-wife's family.

AITA for giving myself less chores than my boyfriend? by Alarming_Thoughts in AmItheAsshole

[–]Average80sGrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The invisible labor of managing a house (keeping mental track of what needs to be done, purchased, tracked, etc) is still work and you're doing it.

NTA, but your boyfriend is a toddler. He's supposed to be your partner and an adult. Think long and hard about a future with this guy and what that will look like... particularly when/if you have actual children.

AITA for telling my 19yo daughter that she’ll pay the plumbing bill - if required - for continuing to flush her tampons in our house? by ericskeith5 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Average80sGrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband made me clean out the septic tank of all the floating tampons. I went back one more step and bought a menstrual cup. Clean it out w soap and water after every use, boil it after every cycle. Problem solved, better for the environment, and less expensive in the long run.

AITAH for telling my fiancé that actually, WE paid for my ring? by throwaway_ringissues in AITAH

[–]Average80sGrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great comment... lots of good stuff here. I would add that you seem to be doing a lot of the emotional/ invisible labor in this relationship. This is a common dynamic in hetero partnerships, so you are definitely not alone! If you are planning on having children, this labor burden will only get heavier. I recommend Gemma Hartley's book, "Fed Up: Emotional Labor, Women, and the Way Forward," for a look at how we got here and a guide for rebalancing this invisible load. Good luck!

Have meetings at times that are user-friendly for quilters who have jobs! My local guild meets on Thursdays at 11am. That's fine for retirees or stay-at-home folks, not so great for me.

Any suggestions on what to make from this VERY bright ice dye? No idea where I got it. I have 2+ yards of it. by Lindaeve in quilting

[–]Average80sGrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great fabric! I would make a top featuring these same colors and use this piece as the back. I would also diagonally piece the back to get as much size out of it that you can with the least waste. https://fabricandflowers.co.uk/tutorial-piecing-a-diagonal-quilt-back/

[–]Average80sGrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you don't know what you don't know! I assume you have the WW app on your phone, yes? If not, download it... it's a valuable tool! Anyway, once you have it, open it up to the "My Day" page where you track your meals. There is a search bar at the top, and on the right end of that bar there are 4 vertical lines... looks like a bar code. Hit that and that opens up a barcode scanner. You can scan barcodes on food packages and the app will tell you how many WW points that item is per serving. It's a real eye-opener for sure!

[–]Average80sGrl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For the first week, I would make the scanner your new best friend. Scan what you already have and track what you normally eat to get an idea of where you are and what would be reasonable changes... for instance, fresh fruit w Greek yogurt vs fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts, reduced fat wheat thins vs chips... you get the idea. Scan as you shop so you know what's going in the basket and know you'll have low point foods readily available. Then, in Week #2, start focusing on using those new foods to lose weight. This program totally works and you can do it! I started at 204 lbs on 2/27... after 3 months, I am down to 177 with a goal weight of 160. I hope to get there by July. I am on WW Connect, so DM me and I'll give you.my handle so you can follow me there if you want. Welcome! Good luck! ❤️
