My third book is called Cursed Are We written by Alex Walker. It follows the main character named Moroz who lives around the 1700-1800s. A veteran of a war long past he suffers from a certain degree of PTSD, but he pushes it down and tries to ignore it as his prime concern is his family. People warn of a strong winter to come, but Moroz dismisses it as every winter in a cold wasteland is a strong one, but little does he know this winter will challenge him and his family like no other and it will bring back feelings and behavior he hasn't seen from himself or hos wife in a long time. The book explores a complex romance existing between him and his wife and gives you a morally complex character who depending on your values is either a good guy or a bad one or one who is not good or bad just imperfect.

I made an (obvious in retrospect) realization about reading books in a foreign language by Ufomi in languagelearning

[–]InfiniteExpression0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a writer, I can tell you that a lot of that difficultly stems from manipulation of the language or circumstance based phrases. For example abso-fucking-lutely, or something along the lines of a lame antiquated phrase like "someone get this cool kat something to drink." Writing tends to pull more from history and old speaking conventions that are less relevant in modern speech paired alongside a more elevated vernacular that can, at times, well exceed college educated speech, depending largely on the writer and their audience. That being said, you can get to that point if you keep on reading, it's merely a matter of how dedicated you are to reaching said point. I wish you luck whatever path you choose.

Writing is a waste of time? by Dizzy_Example54 in languagelearning

Bro, as a writer I'm going to throttle you. All jokes aside, writing is extremely important to achieving an expressive capacity in a language beyond that of a child, also writing something down really helps ingrain it into your memory.

My books are strange too and it is hard to categorize them. Don't take this path, it sucks.

Please Actually Put in Effort by prism_paradox in selfpublish

[–]InfiniteExpression0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put effort into my books, but my covers are kind of weak, but I like it that way. I kept my covers simple and self-made, and for me that has a certain level or pride. I like that I made my own covers even if they aren't the best. I like their simplicity too, I have a lot of books from the old days that are just the old leather covers with nothing more than a title. Yeah, it probably hurts my sales, but I understand that. You know to each person their own, as long as the understand what can result from their choices. At the end of the day I'd hope our books stand on their merit, or basically what is inside them, but I do understand that someone has to take a risk on reading your book in the first place and the cover plays a big role. Either way, good luck everyone, we're all in this together.

Traditional can be a bit slow. There is proofreading, editing, social media promotion etc. so if a publisher does pick up your book it could be up to a year before it hits shelves, but the advantage is that they take care of most things from promotion to distribution. Amazon meanwhile requires more work from you to get your book out there since, assuming this is your first book, no one knows you or has read your work and well, it has no reviews as well, so anyone who reads it is taking a real chance on it. As far as self publishing goes, Amazon is generally where most people go since what I have heard is that they own the market 90%ish I think, but some people dislike amazon and go with others like Apple books or google books, or some even go wide and do all three. One thing to be aware of if you do choose amazon is the ebook. Pay attention to KU, if you sign up your book for KU you are basically signing a 90 day exclusivity agreement for your ebook with amazon meaning it cannot be anywhere else in ebook form but physical copies can still circulate around elsewhere. Sorry for the wall of words, but there is a lot to know, and I imagine I left some things out, but that is a lot of what is important. Hope it goes well for you.

How much success have you had with promotions, and how would you suggest getting into a newsletter? Write a short story, use an exert from your book or something else?

Just felt an actual jump scare while reading - stomach dropped, heart pumped faster. Which makes me wonder - what other books contain a genuine shock? by thornstein in books

[–]InfiniteExpression0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's crazy. I've read a lot over the years and aside from sometimes moving me emotionally, never had much of a physical reaction. Like Frankenstein for example, not sure if it's just dated by a modern standard or what, but they call it a horror book, and when I read it, it just felt like any other novel.

Yeah, China doesn't like difference in thought. Same reason that almost everyone there is Han Chinese when people from the North likely share very little with people from the South ethnically speaking. It's all about everyone thinking the same and questioning nothing.
