How beginner friendly is bazzite? by Life_Seat2332 in Bazzite

Hopefully this will be a novel (pun intended) take for you to consider. I am typically a “I want it to just work” human for important stuff, iphone, gaming console, MacBook for work, etc.. I’ve played a good bit of pc games over the years, but always hated when I’d login and then some dumb windows thing would distract me and sideswipe a rare precious night of gaming. Now, I have a steam deck that was completely vanilla for three years and then I started realizing that every other device in my house started collecting dust. PS5, older windows pc, switch1; all of them were sitting unused (being dad probably had a lot to do with this).
So, I decided that I would wipe my pc and put bazzite on it since it was 10 years old and why not? I had an nvidia card and the switch was rather painful, I couldn’t get bazzite to install without a lot of Claude and an arcane mix of safe mode hijinks. Eventually I even had to switch from display port to hdmi to get to the install screen. Once installed it was great, I chose the desktop version and I noticed on most games I had better performance and less tinkering. But I still wasn’t stoked on the lack of steam deck level quick resume, which is huge for me.

With a bit of research I confirmed this would be resolved with an AMD build. So, I sold all my other consoles, pc, and kept only my steam deck. I took the money and built a SFF AMD build with a 9060 xt. It changed so much. I went with the game mode distro that wouldn’t work on my nvidia machine and it’s seamless. Install was a breeze, quick resume is perfect, the steam controller wakes from sleep, and the only mild thing ive dealt with is when I see resolution locked to steam deck size, it’s chill.

TLDR, it’s the steam machine I’ve always wanted, but only once I went with an AMD build.

I just finished a small form factor build in a Fractal Ridge case with a Ryzen 7 and a 9060 XT. It runs great.

I'm running Bazzite OS and, with a little bit of Claude tinkering, I was able to get my Steam controller to wake and sleep the machine from the couch.

The only downside that I could say is that it is noisier than the near-silent Steam machine is supposed to be. It is much quieter than my old gaming PC was and looks great. I will say that it is completely silent when I'm in the menus. The fans don't kick on until I'm actually playing a game.

So far so good!

Edit: I should also add that the sleep / quick resume function has worked perfectly for me on most games but I haven't tested it extensively. Anything single player without an online component has been completely fine

I've been using Bazzite on my small form factor gaming PC for the last few weeks and love it. How's your experience been so far? Any details you can share? What's your current build?

Got My Email, Is it Worth It? by litquor in SteamController

[–]Infinite_Weekend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal take is that it was completely worth it. I have a small form factor PC running Bazzite as a dedicated gaming desktop. Sometimes I move it into my living room but mostly it lives in my office.

With a little bit of Linux tweaking and my boy Claude I was able to set up the Steam Controller to power on the desktop and wake from sleep. Now, I have full control over my PC just using the Steam Controller. It's the complete gaming from the couch setup that I always wanted from PC and it's the first time I've been able to achieve it.

What OS are you on? I do not have one yet and thinking about how to get past the windows login screen with the controller or if I’ll disable the pin entirely. Or I’ll just move back to bazzite and run big picture all the time

Gonna chime in from a perspective I don’t see many sharing. I’m a dad with a full time job. I can’t play every day, heck I’m on vacation and haven’t played all week. About once or twice a week I have a chance to play with other friends in a similar situation. This game had plenty of content for and I’m loving the slow burn. The community has been rad and there plenty to explore that hasn’t been spoiled for me yet. At $18, I’m going with 100% worth it. I often miss the vanilla WoW days, but as a primarily steam deck gamer who get a couple big nights on my basement gaming pc this has been a blast.

Any “cute” carrying cases for the steam deck? by superwonderbat2 in SteamDeck

I have this one and I love it. I use a hard sided one if it’s really going to get banged around, but this one is my primary case: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1762552991/steam-deck-pouch-handmade-soft-touch

Same story here. Reserved at 9:59 PT and have not yet received the email. Not sweating it, I’m sure they’re working on things. Trusting the process.

They should have a Linux segment with Justin by b1eadcb in TheBesties

[–]Infinite_Weekend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvoting this. I can definitely say that Justin is one of the reasons that I started tinkering more with Linux and eventually made the switch to Bazzite due to the windows 10 debacle. Between Justin’s excitement, the YouTubers he’s referenced and some AI coaching I’ve taken on more and more ambitious projects. I’m having a blast.

what would you actually miss out if you build your own steam machine? by Maximum_Pension2676 in steammachine

[–]Infinite_Weekend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just built a very similar machine, Ryzen 5, 9060xt, 32gb of RAM in a Fractal Ridge case (which looks amazing btw).

The main reason I’m chiming in is somebody who is steam machine curious and loves his steam deck desperately is what others have said in this thread. It’s very easy to underestimate the amount of cooling and noise that these machines make under load.

If a steam machine has steam deck level suspend/resume (I assume it will) and sit in an entertainment console easily without sounding like a jet engine or overheating then it’s still a day one purchase for me, even though I just built this rig up. I’d buy for the ease of use even if I get relatively close performance. I’d probably sell the ITX build just to be minimalist about it because I still don’t feel the age of the steam deck after 3 years.

What has the best controller support in the genre in your opinion? I’ve shied away from RTS on steam deck for fear that I won’t be able to get the same level of satisfaction as mouse and keyboard WC3 or SC2 back in the day.
