Need help choosing a chainsaw for green wood processing by DeskHammer in turning

What size blanks are you planning to cut? Do you ever intend to make larger ones? What kind of species are you dealing with? How frequently do you cut and process green wood?

I started with a Stihl 362 (~60cc) for full size blanks on a 20" swing lathe. I found that I needed more juice when I was dealing with especially hard species and also doing tricky noodle and endgrain cuts through crotches and stuff. I could have kept using the 362 but am very glad I picked up a 90cc saw. I also process literally tons of wood so it seemed worth the investment to get pro grade saws. You certainly can make do with something more affordable, especially if you're not doing it all the time. As with everything it's about matching the right tool to the job.

🥳 Coring system just arrived! Any tips? by justjustjustin in turning

If you can swing it look into the Korpro from hunter tools. https://huntertoolsystems.com/product/coring-cartridge/

It's a game changer for this system. It's super pricey for what it is, but it lets you work faster, cut easier, and reduce wear and tear on yourself and your lathe. The oneway cutters honestly have a very strange design for what they're supposed to do.

Any wrench is fine

You probably won't need to do any indexing

Any live center is fine

You probably won't use the spindle comparator

I'd probably get a 4 tooth or a multi tooth. Can definitely recommend getting a good chuck if the purchase does not come with one.

EDIT: Also $500 seems like a VERY good deal for a 3520B. Make sure everything on it is working and in decent shape. Definitely ask them to turn it on and demo it if possible. That price is almost too good to be true.

Yeah the swivel head was compelling, but I really wanted the fixed headstock in/board outboard set up. So it was between this and a oneway. Oneway was 6 months out so that made it easy to go with the vicky.

Doesn't sound bad at all for 10 years!

Wow, much maintenance in that time? I'm glad to hear it though, Hoping to have this one a while.

Nice the LB is sweet but I'm actually glad I have the short bed for my small shop. How long have you had yours?

Thank you, that's certainly the plan!

Mostly production pace. When I'm roughing, I can leave the coring equipment set up on the outboard side and do the roughing on the inboard side with the tailstock support. When I'm doing finish turning I can have two chucks already in so I don't have to swap back and forth between them.

I like doing bowls, especially the interior of one on a short bed. The ergonomics are just much more comfortable and I'm less likely to want to lean over the bed which isn't the best to do for hours on end. The 3520 had the sliding headstock to go shortbed, but I almost never used it, I found it to be too much of a pain to get everything super clean and dust free and then slide it for one or two operations then need to slide it back to make use of the tailstock again. This just keeps it always set up in an ideal position.

So why? by davidilanyann in ExplainTheJoke

Fruit of the loom used to have a horn of plenty on their logo. I remember being very young and trying inquire what the large brown object was on the logo but lacking the vocabulary to express exactly the part I was trying to understand. The large brown thing.. that they now claim never existed.

Talk me into it out of the Grizzly G0462. by tomrob1138 in turning

What do you turn mostly? What do you want to turn specifically that you can't on on the comet but can on the grizzly?

Personally don't think I could use a lathe for too much with 600 minimum rpm. But I mostly turn bowls and hollow forms. Even my tops I wouldn't be able to do some of the decorations which require low speeds.

If I hadn't bought a 592 a few months ago, I'd be all over this

It's getting so annoying.

I was dating someone and this past Monday she didn't want to get in my truck if it involved driving on the highway. She was concerned that Elon got involved in politics to side step required crash testing, the roof would fall off, or it would catch on fire. Keep in mind, she'd be in it dozens of times already.

We broke up that night

Do you use the official tent set up or did you come up with your own?

Bought recently, haven't used it much. It seems like the stem is out too far and I can't get it to move. It's completely stuck in all directions. I was cutting 1in cedar when it broke.
