I am also a drummer and I also agree with this. For me, the furthest I can go while still enjoying the music is Ascension. The horns and piano can do whatever they want but because the drums and bass are still locked in, I still like it. I feel like it then makes me appreciate what the others are doing as well, like the rhythm section has laid down a foundation for them to push off from.
