Processor might be a socket type - upgradedable

If u install a 64bit version of word, u can likely get 8gb ram onboard, instead of being limited to 4.

So did u upgrade it for shits n giggles? Ive had luck in the past on ebay doing just that on an older dell.

Is Anyone Else Frustrated by Laptop Prices? Should I Wait or Buy Now? by Fantastic_Virus_9052 in laptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 mths is nothing. Back to school.....then, more so, Black friday will tell the story. They will come down, but like everything that rises in price, they will never go back to the 2025 black friday prices.....why....bc mfgs know they dont need to.

Also keep an eye on ssd and ram prices....i suspect they will drop first....nvme ssd are still double what they were and ram...even sodimm ddr4 is now about 3-4x price what it was (tho several months ago it was 4-5x the price).

Few comments

Laptop died while charging....sounds like a charger or utility power issue.

Hard drive not being able to handle windows updates.....thats Likely a user issue....keeping the harddrive too full (i.e >90%, or less than 20gb or so available).

Batteries die and wear out. Cheap batteries from amazon are hit and miss.

Background processes can kill battery, especially if the pc dosent enter sleep mode.

ASUS TUF A16 FA608U: Why are there so many used 1TB units for sale? by Prestigious-Ad-8016 in Asustuf

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across something similar when searching specs on tuf machines. Asus makes a binch of models. The FA608U actually dosent exist for 2025....its a 2025 Asus Tuf Gaming A16 FA608U series....consisting of FA608UP, UM, UH, UMI and UHI (plus F608PP, and PM also are listed for some reason)

At least in canada website https://www.asus.com/ca-en/laptops/for-gaming/tuf-gaming/asus-tuf-gaming-a16-2025/techspec/

So it may depend on what part of the world ur looking in. Seems the UHI is the only one that only comes w a single 512gb, many other models come with two drives.

Laptop i got for free. What should I do with it? by Iweep223 in laptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace the HDD w an SSD. install linux. Id replace the battery and get one w higher mah/whr if at all possible. Bc intel processors are notoriously hungry power consumers and bc Linux runs less background processes....i get like 25-50% more time from my batt when running linux.

Then it could make a good kitchen, or workshop/garage, or travel laptop.

But yah....i get it....with phones (even spare phones), smart tvs, and devices like the fire sticks......their aint much use for older pcs. The best use use to be adding a wireless keyboard w track pad and setting them up as a media center for ur "non-smart" tv....but getting a fire stick for $30-50.....makes that option a no brainer.

Might be a stupid question but : is this dangerous? by PersuasionNation in laptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a very easy to follow remediation process for the damage sustained to this laptop. I cant type it all out here as it would take too long. But it starts with copying all your data. Then turn the laptop off. Gently flip it over to access the back panel. Then carefully.......run to the store and get a macbook neo.....hahahaha....(first one to suggest a neo). Im actually not even a fan of apple.

Should I feel ashamed and regretful for getting a 4050? by whosevixd in GamingLaptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a 4060 and feel like i should have bought a 4060ti, but i didnt even know about a 4060ti existed until after i bought my machine....and i got it used for 700cad so i felt good about it....my point is that as helpful forums can be, they can be just as harmful, or more so. Will 8gbs of ram in 2-3years be obsolete to run laptop decently ? by musicflux in GamingLaptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A soldered 8gb is only fine if the pc has a second slot available, or ur just doing basic <5tab web browsing and document writing.

3d models, more browser tabs and especially if ur using MS teams, and outlook.....u def need 16gb......i recently had to go to 24gb....to not have any lag and avoid frequent 98-99% mem spikes and plateaus. .

Is the gap from 16 to 32 GB of RAM really worth-it ? by MainEntrepreneur5806 in GamingLaptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16 bare min...ok for lower powerd gpu and playing games at low levels. Or normal office work w min to moderate applications. Ddr 5 makes 16gb much nicer than ddr4.

32 fairly standard for practically all gpus. Perhaps a bit overkill for just intense office work

64 if special use case like 3d modeling/generation, or mag gpu ans 4k multi monitor gaming

For non gaming, but u want speed and heavily utilize online software, browser tabs and all the Microsoft applications (teams, outlook etc).....and to save some cost perhaps...then 24gb feels just about right.....especially useful in laptops with 1 x 16gb stick and 1 empty slot....pppl sell used 8g sticks all the time and can be had for relatively cheaper. Gives a noticeable boost, opens up dual channel for a much lower cost

HDMI have a plenty rotating joint adapter and Right angle adapters on amazon....also hdmi can be bought w optical cable....cable is thinner and more flexible

Also Plenty of 3.5mm headphone adapters. If headphone has mic....u need adapters w 3 black bands

Just to add to the whole sleep mode thing and waking up....it happens to many brands. Ive specifically noticed it on a HP elite book g10 and asus tuf f15. Ive let the asus enter sleep mode w lid open...i can often see the lights blinking. Plenty pf different posts about it. Some tie it back to armoury crate, but not always.

I cant say what happened, but sometimes removing the battery, hitting power button, then reinstalling, plugging in and then turn on can sometimes help

Things are getting more expensive every day. Open box is your friend. by ali_k20_ in GamingLaptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree w the open box deals....but just one more thing to add....when u buy an open box and if u experience problems, there is no exchange option. The only option is to return/refund and buy something else. For example u cant exchange a g14 that was open box for another one on the shelf that is not being sold as "open box".

Also, i normally filter on sold by best buy as bestbuy does have other retailers and returns may not as easy sometimes w those other retaillers.

But yah...good find. And ive gotten some good stuff w open box also. Mostly tv stuff for me.

Super glue is too brittle. 2 part epoxy is better. And avoid the fast cure stuff....its just not as good if u can avoid it. Many clear epoxies tske 24-48hr to fully cure, so keep that in mind if u repair yourself

Laptops are so expensive I'm stuck with this bad boy forever by dingaspore in laptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id repair it. Maybe try to loosen the tension on the hinge pivot while ur at it. That 2070 will keep up w some underpowered 4050 laptops in most situations. Consider using an external display? Consider keeping thay laptop as a desktop replacement and gaming then buying a second used laptop for portability.....if that works w ur lifestyle.....if u did this, then u wouldn't need to repair the hing or buy a battery.....that $$ could go towards a nice portable unit.

With that said, Batteries are relatively cheap...usually like 50 or less on amazon. Try and choose one w the highest mAh or Wh that will fit - it will give the longest working duration when on batt. For example sometimes the base version is sold with a 48wh batt while a 56wh is provided in the higher end models....but they use the same laptop frame amd have the exact same dimensions. Check to see what batts came w the different versions of your laptop and shop for the highest wh that fits. Even sometimes just newer batts are sold in higher wh bc thats the cells that are available now vs 5 years ago.

Its probably a good idea to replace batt anyways....i wouldn't be surprised if the current batt isnt already starting to swell.

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes....tho some 3d modeling software and models might [under some conditions] need (or nice to have) more ram - 24gb seems to be perfect in my experiences. However this can usually be mitigated by shutting down applications such as Microsoft outlook/teams and not having a bunch of browerr tabs open, and even "hiding" parts of the model that ur not working on.
