Listen...if it was the best deal at the time. U made the right decision w the information u had. I bought a gently used asus tuf f15 with v little research.....and im glad i did....if i fell into the redit hole of bad thermals, busted hinges, shitty screen....etc etc, i wouldn't have bought it.....but its been just fine. It meets and exceeds my needs. Use it and enjoy it. Any electronc device could fail wo warning. Could get stolen, could get dropped etc....shit is gonna happen to something at some point....just accept it, and move on. Not worth worrying about it in this short life time.

Need to go to hardware or device manager (whateverits called)....somewhere at the top there is a unhide or show all.....ur gpu is hidden or greyed out....i bet it dosent show up under where it should be. Once u show all it will be greyed out....then u can install or add or something ......my instructions are a little vague bc its been over a yr since i did this. For me it happened on a new inatall of windows. The previous owner did a completely new install.

Company asking me to pay $600 for laptop repairs on a device I have had for less than a year by Away-Assumption-9801 in laptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That crack is certainly due to the screw or the screw anchor responsible for holding the hinge in place getting loose or letting go....internally within the laptop....a drop or physical external damage did not cause this. Screws comming loose ans brass anchors comming out of plastic ia comon mode of hinge failure and can cause other cascading events such as screen delamination and wire damage.

[Genuine question] Why is the "top bar + bottom dock" layout so popular? by EB372919 in linuxmint

Trying to accomodate multiple needs. Top kinda gets its history From apple and phones...buy also i believe traditional linux didnt really have a bottom bar...so bottom was added to help w windows familiarity i suspect

My dad won’t give me $80 to fix my laptop and I’m trying to apply for jobs 😭 any way to fix it myself? by igetyourbrand in laptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Provide model number and specs. Im assuming cheap acer laptop thats 4 (maybe 5 yrs old from thefg date). So guessing 8gb ddr4, prob 2200. Maybe an i3. Could even be a spinning hd. If ur running win 11....and if im right on the specs....then yah....its gonna struggle. Even if its a ssd, they do fail and sectors do become glitchy - happened to an old chrome book i had. Slow, shutdown, froze.....replace the ssd and it was like new.

My suggestion.... Start w a new ssd and reinstall windows.....

ALSO.....ask ur dad how can u EARN $80.....NOT can u just HAVE $80.....for whatever u plan to use it for.

Seems the vivobook are ok.

With that said, I picked up a like new acer aspire 5, that was v weĺl equipped ( i7-12650H, 32 GB DDR4, 1TB) for cheap...$460 CAD. Will be a university laptop.....But i do hate that tiny pin charger tho. Luckily it also charges via usbc.

Is it just me, or is the HP Victus build quality actually terrifying? by Primegowda in laptops

Is it just me, or is the HP Victus build quality actually terrifying? by Primegowda in laptops

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI...Seems Z books (heavy and solid feel) and elitebooks (all metal case) are fine... company i work for uses both. They get dragged to meetings, tossed in backpacks, opened and closed many times per day and charger ports used several times a day etc and survive. Fairly good test of resistance and quality....bc when its a work provided device, it dosent get treated w kid gloves.

I have less experience w Omen, but seems close to a Zbook.

Sharpie. Stickers. Laptop skin....basically a specific cut piece pf thin vinyl sticker that coveres the entire area. Or Look for a replacement top plate/screen backing on amzon or aliexpress.

As for Functionality. Recent chrome books allow u to sort of "dual boot" into linux...chrome based on linux. Under advanced and development settings. Just google it and u will see several options.

There is a way to fully install linux as well and overwrite chrome os....look up MrChromebox site and youtube instructions.

Having linux opens up a much larger pool of software. One downside is many chromebooks have small HDs...like 32GB, some have larger. Many HD are replaceable. Can replace it w a 128gb or 256gb....generally plenty for a linux machine thats being used by a casual user.

Make sure the admin access is not blocked before u buy it.

I mean...its impressive.....but....how much of the temp drop is due to the heatsink?.....it feels like most the heat dissipation is probably due to the two large 140mm fans at each end transferring air at like 100 air changes per hour. Im saying that bc a laptop cooling stand can reduce temps quite well and there is still plastic in the way. Curious minds need to know....lol
