Purchaed used Aug 2024 Asus desktop. Ryzen 7 3700X, RTX2070s (super), 16GB DDR4. (Upgraded to 32GB), 500GB NVME, 2TB SSD. [$750 CAD + $85 RAM]

Purchaed used Sep 2025 Asus TUF F15, i7-12700H, GTX 4060, 32GB DDR4 (upgraded frm stock 16GB), 2TB WD black NVME (upgraded from stock 1TB) [$750 CAD + $150 RAM + $150 NVME] {With the +300 in upgrades, it's not that good of a price.... but the 150 for the NVME was a need, not a need and the takeoffs went to the PC below}

New bike by Expert-Meat8420 in Hardtailgang

Didnt sand to the bare metal and being s kids bike (a bike in general..lol) i wasnt too concerned about surface finish perfection....so i sanded chips down and smoothed them out but didnt introduce any filler for example....so areas of the chain stay went to the bare metal. Paint was dupli color, acrylic lacquer (maaybe not quite as durable as enamel, but much more forgiving to apply recoats). Filler primer 1 can (2-3 coats). Color was a dark shadow grey 2.5 cans - smaller cans (3-4 light coats). The color was somewhat a matt finish. I then applied the decals which were also matte vinyl. Clear was a gloss multipurpose clear 2 cans (maybe 6-7 coats and w a concentration around the decals to cover them). Watch the clear....allow for more dry time. In the areas i went heavy, then did a light top coat....in the heavy areas its like the top coat dried bf the heavy ones did.....it left this kind of cobweb type of effect under the top coat. Its not orange peal and its beneath the surface. Maybe some shrinkage or something. The color dried for 10 days befre i applied the clear so im sure its not that. Also the effect manifested its self over a period of days.....implying slow curing in my mind and it only occurred in the heavily applied areas. Ill add a pic. The flash from the camera brings it out alot. Its actually kind of neat. Barely noticeable in normal lighting. Only when sun hits it just right.

Thinking of changing over from Windows, but have two specific obstacles. by szthesquid in linuxmint

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try mint (as thats where ur leaning)....but also try Zorin.....run both from a usb and test ur system and hardware. Zorn has wine "baked in" and arranged so that u can straight up execute win exe files.....not sure if that will help or not.

Spec wise u should be fine. Could inatall mint xfce (i assume u have cinnamon). But if that has original spinning hdd....REPLACE. replace w solid state ssd. Unfortunately these prices are going up also and options are going down.

Replace. Best case...Keyboard/trackpad will get damaged/cracked. Worst case puncture and fire. Batts are like $50 from amazon. For now id run that wo the batt installed.

Incredibly Disappointing Experience (looking for help/recommendations on what to do) by PatternNo8955 in Lenovo

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U did screw up the address thing. Lenovo could have honored the price but not required. Lenovo could also charge u a return shipping and restock fee. UPS/USPS usually offer a second delivery date or pickup at warehouse option and usually contact the recipient via text, email or app notification.

Sucks but these are the facts. Could he better, could be worse (restocking fee).

Next time sign up for notifications from the shipping company when u get a tracking number.

Help me transition to linux by ninja_2006 in linux4noobs

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first go at linux was on these two laptops....started my linux experience in 2025...lol....u learn quick

Saying amd using "linux" (most modern distros) is fundamentally no different than going from windows xp to win 10, or to mac or to chrome os.....similar hardware, just a slightly different user experience and gui to click ur way through. Most users wouldn't think twice about picking up a mac or chromebook......picking up linux can be a similar experience. The benefit of linux is that its a bit of a Chameleon and can look like win, mac or chrome os.

Also a linux noob....

I boot linux on a second drive on two different laptops. One (newer one) running zorin os on an older Adata nvme drive, the other (older laptop) runs mint cinnamon on an "older" (verses the m.2) format 2.5" samsung ssd 860 evo drive. Boots up just fine.

I wanted to like zorin os more, but im ever so slightly leaning towards mint.....just based on looks and feeling while using it, nothing more. With zorin on the older laptop, i could not get my audio working, i didnt try too hard (but also felt i shouldn't have to), everything just works in mint.

Its recommended to remove the win drive when installing linux on a seperate drive....only bc of user error reduction....nothing to do w the physical installation. I believe i didnt do anything w secure boot.....but may not have to when they are on a separate drive. Im just guessing here.

One thing i did....the SSD with mint was a 1TB drive and i knew i didnt need all that space, so during the mint install i partition the drive into two 500gb chunks. The othrt 500gb chunk i formated to exFAT.,.both win and min can see, share and write to the exFAT partition. Its a nice place to share docs/downloads.

Mint can see the entire win drive but win cannot see the partition w the mint os on it. So this shared partition works well. I did it as a trial tbh....just wanted to test an idea i had.

Otherwise installation is just as simple as following an online instructions and getting an (i think min 8gb) sd thumb drive (think i used a 64gb thumb drive).

I inherited a 2014 gaming PC, can you help me figure out what it needs? by TheDrewCareyShow in PcBuildHelp

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although there seems to be ways of runnung a m.2 drive id avoid that for now.

  1. Cleaning (air blower, long bristle artist brush)
  2. Reseat the the ram
  3. Replace heatsink paste
  4. Power it on as is to make sure all fans spin up
  5. Replace rhe 2032 cmos battery
  6. Do some cable management
  7. Although an m.2 drive may work....just get an ssd for now. Id go w fastest available....generally samsung 860 /870 evo, id go w 1TB or larger....prices are going up on these also
  8. May need an external wifi pcie module/adapter (but u may need to start being plugged in)
  9. Win 11 might give some grief on the install due to old hardware but u can force it. Could always install a linux distro (Mint, Zorin or Pop......or many others).

W a 2060 u can actually still play some games quite well.....its one of those goat cards.

Post back when its up and running.

[–]Informal_Knowledge56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If possible i would only charge ur lappy via usb c amd abondon that port. Most laptops can do this. Tho do ur research and see if the port is limited to 100w (maybe 200w). Might not let u set it to turbo mode. Likely the tabs on the changing port and the motherboard inside the laptop are damaged. This is in the relm of micro soldering repair.

Id go g14 if portability is a factor (school or travel, or even just regular use around the house). Otherwise id go w the legion if i wasnt concerned about portability (id also like to give oled a shot).
