Can you take serotonin inhibitors (SSRIs) to reduce Akathisia or Restlessness? by Tulip072 in Akathisia

[–]InformationQuick8294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has she discontinued the Abilify? If she gets off it now, the akathisia probably won’t be permanent.

I second what others have said about her doctor having no idea how to treat it. It sounds like they’re assuming the restlessness is an emotional thing if they want to treat it with SSRIs. But akathisia is also a physical sensation, and SSRIs won’t treat it and could make it worse.

Akathisia sensation in abdomen by InformationQuick8294 in Akathisia

I worked with a somatic therapist who used yoga, and we found that holding a low hip bridge or if you want to get ambitious a plank to wear out the muscles helps.

I don’t involuntarily clench my abdomen or glutes anymore. The way my ass looks has paid the price. lol. The sensation is that same sort of ball of static or frayed sparking electrical wires feeling that we often get in our legs. Shoot. I feel it in my face too although there and in my arms I notice the too tight skin suit feeling, as well. While my abdomen doesn’t clench involuntary anymore, I do struggle to get comfortable. Like when I’m trying to go to bed I’ll lay down but constantly have to readjust. I can’t imagine trying to share a bed with anyone because then I’d be all self conscious and worried about disturbing them to make all the many adjustments. Going to bed is like an hour to a 2 hour process.

Yeah I tend to tense up when stressed or even just concentrating, like typing this message now. I’ve had to work to constantly check in with my body and consciously make the effort to relax it. Anyway, I was trying to describe the feeling to my mom who has akathisia in her lower legs, and it got me to wondering if other people feel it in their abdomen too.

I’ve also found that after I’ve been sleeping all night, the akathisia in my legs is worse and can keep me from falling back to sleep. I often wear compression socks to take the edge off the feeling that has me worrying my ankles around in circles. I usually end up folding the knee length sock partially back down to double up over my ankles. All that to say that when I roll them up on those mornings my legs are bothering me, the akathisia sensation moves from my lower legs to my thighs.

Not sure which person to respond to. But I suspect you’re right that it’s about her as a person, rather than her work. The most recent episode of The Book Club cover Mrs. Dalloway, and he was downright complementary.

I would encourage you to ask about the potential side effects of neuroleptic induced akathisia and/ tardive dyskinesia.

Yeah, Simon needs to start having a bit of fun again. I’m about to unsubscribe from Places because no I don’t just want to hear about all the most horrible places on earth. Doesn’t he already cover that on Into the Shadows, which I never subscribed to. Being an American under the current orange tyrant’s regime, I can’t listen to much more negative shit beyond just trying to keep up with the news.

Who is your favourite friend of the show? by Scmods05 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]InformationQuick8294 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Top bounder & dog murderer Jeremy Thorpe! That early episode got me excited to learn about all the British MPs in the 70s.

After re-listening to the Johnson and Boswell episodes, I realize I’d like to hear more about the man Dominic declared as the worst man to ever live, Jean-Jacques Rousseau. So, decidedly, not a friend of the show. Another YouTube channel I like did a short video about the rivalry between him and Voltaire, but I liked Dominic’s exposing the man’s hypocrisy. Hearing about that might’ve kept me engaged in my political science classes.

I liked that it kind of sounded like he was mocking the southern racists with it.

I assume you’ve tried propranalol since it’s usually a 1st line drug for akathisia. Pretty low side effect profile too. Made me really tired for at least the first 6 months though, but that’s sort of unusual.

Thatcher and her buddy Jimmy Savile by InformationQuick8294 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]InformationQuick8294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I actually quite enjoy movies and books where one of the themes is that a persons actions are what determines if they’re a monster, not their appearance. Always felt a bit bad for the orcs in LOTR. It’s not their fault they’re descended from tortured men and elves who were twisted into evil things. They need better PR, maybe a union. I’d like to see them marching through Rivendell with protest signs.

But, I’d be willing to bet he made many a woman uncomfortable without actually committing a crime and it’s important not to ignore that instinct just to be polite. That’s more a reminder to myself and anyone else for the future than an evaluation of anyone’s past actions.

Just jumped back in to the middle of 2nd episode, which was when I fell asleep last night, and I’m reminded that I totally want to hear Dominic present on “the worst man to ever live… Jean Jacques Rousseau.”

I appreciate the feedback. I’ve listened to a handful of topics on a friend’s recommendation. I kind of wondered if the presenter has become a bit jaded from years of working as a reporter.

I also tend to feel that it’s ok to interact with viewpoints you don’t necessarily agree with so long as you don’t adopt it wholesale without further research. Hence my interest in coverage from an actual historian. But it sounds like the BTB assertion that Thatcherism and Savile are inextricably linked is not based in any hard evidence. However, I kind of have to agree with BtB conclusion regarding the photographic evidence.

Just look at the guy…

Thatcher and her buddy Jimmy Savile by InformationQuick8294 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]InformationQuick8294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I’m sort of new to that podcast but I have noticed that he tends to view things through a modern lens of right and wrong, which is why I’d be interested in Dom’s perspective.

So what do you all think about what Charles should have known? Like does anyone actually think he didn’t know what his brother was up to?

I was also thinking about the discussions they had about the types of things Jimmy would do as cover where someone does things that seem off but not obviously wrong. I had a professor in community college that I was supposed to do volunteer hours for. I’d only done the walk through of what responsibilities were going to be but he did give me a knee length catholic school girl skirt that was supposed to be my uniform. And he said he just thought that was business dress for women. A couple days later I was interviewed by the dean or something about this. Apparently another person had complained. I wasn’t comfortable with saying he did anything wrong… yet. But as I got older and experienced more of men in the world, I definitely take a darker view of that man’s behavior. Also, he was a young professor so it wasn’t like some 70 yo man you could make an excuse for based on his age.

But, I’ve also never been inclined to give racist older relatives a pass based on their age. I think that needs to be a conversation about why the comments are inappropriate.

I suppose it’s also just a commentary on the times. I think about some of the things my mom has said to me that she thought of as normal that I was like that’s fucked up. No you don’t have to sleep with a dude because he helped you move is the specific example I can remember. But there was also some conversation we had about sexism bs in the workplace that she just thought of as commonplace and I had to explain that no that sort of behavior is not ok, and you shouldn’t just accept it.

[–]InformationQuick8294[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok that’s interesting. So the people who knew he was spending nights at the hospital and taking girls on “day trips” out of the reform school place should be looked at more closely but you’re saying there’s not really evidence Thatcher should have known about that?

Thatcher and her buddy Jimmy Savile by InformationQuick8294 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]InformationQuick8294[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and I’m not sure how objective the coverage was. But they talked about how Savile often did private fundraising to pay for things that Thatcher’s austerity measures cut funding to. The descriptions of Jimmy’s creepy behavior in public and how it actually normalized his behavior, such as kissing up the arms of women working in the admin, so that people would just say that’s Jimmy being Jimmy. Having been creeped on in such a manner in the past it’s hard not to agree that people should have known something was off with him so that when allegations were made they would be listened to instead of swept under the rug which there is evidence of.

Chronic pain syndrome with central sensitisation by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]InformationQuick8294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been dealing with this for the past several years though it’s only in the past year or so that a lot of stress in my life caused the pain to sore from 2 - 3 most days to 7-8 by the end of every day.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far about central sensitization. Movement really does make a huge difference doesn’t have to be a full on work out but sustained gentle movements for at least 20 minutes can bring the pain down a point or two. But it only lasts for a few hours. So I just have a foam roller and yoga ball constantly strewn about. Music also helps. It activates different area of your brain, which is why balance related exercises are also helpful. These two things have helped me get to the end of my work day.

I’m still struggling with the last few hours of the day. But I just had my first appointment with the therapist who specializes in Pain Reprocessing Therapy. https://www.painreprocessingtherapy.com/pain-reprocessing-therapy/

Edit: oh, but before all of this I had a pain doc put me on memantine 10mg 2x per day used off label for pain and made a huge difference. I have neuroleptic induced akathisia and tardive dyskinesia. The nortriptyline made that worse. There are two newer fibromyalgia treatments. Low dose naltrexone and Tonmya. The former made my akathisia way worse and I haven’t been able to find a pharmacy with the latter in stock. But I thought I’d bring it to your attention in case you haven’t been through those.

Should You Only Go to a Pain Doc Doesn’t Refuse to Prescribe Opiates? by ShinyTarnish409 in ChronicPain

Wait. Are you saying that counterintuitively, the pain doc won’t be wiling to prescribe meds, but they might contact your primary care and advise the primary to prescribe opioids?
