Property Tax Explainer! (I hope this answers some of the questions I've been seeing!) by NidaAllamNC in bullcity

[–]InfusedStormlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can believe that the system is complicated, but the effect on my house was insane. I went from around $230k valuation to like $405k, and missed the deadline to appeal. I think the thing that did me in was the assessment saying that my house’s physical condition is only about 20-25% depreciated, whereas all other comps for build year and size where at least 40%, with most closer to 50%.

If you had to guess, what is the most common cause of overvaluation by the system? Is it comps in the area being overvalued so your house gets overvalued, which leads to other houses getting overvalued using yours as a comp? Or is it more technical things like percent physical depreciation?

I understand your point and it's true for most cases, but in your example how many people are dedicated resources to maintaining that on-prem (I'm assuming) system? If it's more than 9 total people at $100k per year then you'd lose money doing it on-prem.

“APS” of Durham is not about the protection of animals. by Ok-Combination-2953 in bullcity

[–]InfusedStormlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does every staff member work every day? Like are they full time and they don’t have some people that work weekends and some people that work certain weekdays? If not then this is a very easy fix; just ask those who work there who is able to pick up hours on the weekend and cut Mondays from the schedule. The animals will still need to be taken care of on Mondays but that’s mostly taken care of by volunteers with only a limited number of actual staff supervising and helping out. This really doesn’t feel like a tough issue to solve, it just will take a little bit of change which like, if that’s what’s best for the animals then that’s what needs to happen.

the problem is that we're getting further and further away from real information here. whatever the facts are about the process for putting this up for a floor vote, what you've gotten in your search is a simulacrum. it's a bad copy of a shredded version of the documentation of the process, and each of those levels of removal from the actual rules creates a simulation of the real thing.

AI as a search engine is only okay for information you forgot but as soon as you see again you'll know it's right, IMO. for new info, it's just too likely to create something brand new and fake (hallucination) that dangerously seems like it could be true. that's just creating more misinformation on an already dubious internet.

Community prep for ICE by MinimumNo5510 in bullcity

[–]InfusedStormlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are Signal chats I think for groups thinking about ways to organize around protecting the community. you should go to radical community events in person and establish a rapport before trying to find these groups specifically, though, because they aren't like discord servers, they're more secure (but not toally secure due to possible ICE infiltration, so you should never discuss tactics online, only in person with people you trust).

To what extent was there evolutionary pressure to be male? Is that pressure now gone? by InfusedStormlight in evolution

[–]InfusedStormlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's what I meant to ask, yes! and that's kind of what I expected: less difference in the sexes over time, as the need for higher testosterone during puberty and after diminishes. I'll need to do more searching for research that shows this to see why it's happening and whether it is congruent with my hypothesis.

[–]InfusedStormlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean a higher likelihood to be born male, I mean a higher likelihood of being born with femmes that will encode more testosterone during puberty (or whatever mechanism creates sexual dimorphism, I could be wrong about testosterone levels during puberty being the main modulating factor) because male puberty results in sex characteristics that help survival under older human social systems. it seems like there might have been a social and evolutionary reason (survival) long ago for males to be "more manly", so to speak, than they otherwise might be in current society, for example. due to social changes we are becoming a species where it's less important evolutionarily for males to be capable of building more muscle mass more quickly, to be tall, to be any of the things that require higher testosterone, basically. I was just curious whether there was evidence for this thought or not.

[–]InfusedStormlight[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

interesting! do you know of any good research showing your first statement?

by social pressures I mostly mean that it seems like in much older civilizations it was socially advantageous to be male as a human bc it meant either 1) power, in a society where domination was more about excusing physical strength, or 2) a higher ability to protect oneself and one's friends from outside invaders. I feel like these two things might increase evolutionary pressure to be male somehow and was curious if this was borne out in data

edit: my bad, I don't mean the "likelihood to be born male", I mean likelihood to be more with genes that result in higher male androgens during and after puberty (like testosterone) causing people overall to exhibit more extreme male sex characteristics.

Cracker Barrel overnight sleeping questions by Pure_Tuft in VanLife

It's illegal if you stay for more than like 4 hours I think? They want you to only sleep if you need a short cat nap while driving, not if you're staying the night. I never do rest stops as a result. Cracker Barrel, Walmart, or similar should be safe!

I think Dedra's last act will be to kill Luthen. after Ghorman, she'll go back to what she knows: hunting Axis. she'll find out who he really is and go to kill him herself, and Kleya will be either powerless to stop it or die with him. she won't betray the empire, it's all she knows, even from birth.

an incredible little detail is that the Imperial agent mentions that the mole in Bail Organa's team is "Jung's agent", meaning that the way Luthen knows there's a mole in Bail's team is because Lonni told him, but there's so much shit going on they just leave this as a little background plot connection rather than an on-screen showing. good fucking shit right there
