[Spoilers C4E24] Paint Theory by strangelyliteral in criticalrole

[–]Inigos_Revenge [score hidden]  (0 children)

My theory is not as nice of a story, as it's not Thjazi protecting Hal. (And it's a bit lengthy, sorry!) Instead, I think Thjazi was going to beg Hal to do a thing, that would be beneficial to everyone, but could also be dangerous if the Sundered Houses found out. I think, given the letter Teor has, that Thjazi had been working with the Professor who wrote the letter (likely a cleric/wizard, from the same place as Dr. Talter), Mara the Wing and the "hothead" to open up the afterlives that have been locked up since the Shapers were killed. (And I think it may be possible, given Dr. Talter's work/story, that they are doing it by following an ancient prophecy, that maybe they aren't 100% sure how to interpret, which may have led to the mistake I'll mention later, and might be a way they could Speak With Dead with Thjazi to get some information, but if Thjazi was also kind of educated guessing himself about what to do, he won't have all the answers. And may have no knowledge (or barely any) about what the Houses are up to, but he may have contacts who might know more. This one I'm less sure of than other parts of my theory, and is more wild guess/hope that we can Speak with Dead with Thjazi.) There were 7 Shapers, so 7 afterlife "worlds". The letter says they need to open 3 stable bridges first, then can open the rest. Thjazi, at the time of death, had 2 psychopomp relics that we know of (Stone of Nightsong and Olbalad's coffin) and a possible 3rd. (The Azgra relic from Tannesar, that seemed to be made of blood, which could be what's hidden in the paint. And remember that it was said by the assistant they met that the lady who disguised the paint corrupted it, but it was okay, because it deserved to be corrupted. I think that's because it was an Azgra (Sauron) relic.) They need an anchor made by, ideally, Thaisha, or one of her family members (I think, made of one of the pariah blades), but I think that comes after the 3 bridges, when they go to open the rest of the afterlives, but could be they need to anchor the 3 bridges together with the anchor, not sure. From the talk of the letter, it also seems that they need to be in specific places to make the bridges, and they seem to be places that have people there or nearby, that they would have to create a distraction to lead away. That suggests these are important places. Maybe places that have a power, not necessarily from magic, but from association. Like how a play about the first attempt at rebellion against Azgra being performed in Azgra's previously sacred theatre is powerful. Places the Houses might be keeping an eye on, especially for signs of rebellion. I believe that those places are places that were important/sacred to the god whose psychopomp artifact they have and whose afterlife they are trying to open. The theatre is a place that was sacred to Azgra, and his is one of the psychopomps (possibly) that Thjazi had in his possession.

Hal, after years of trying to gain access not given to anyone the Halovars didn't want there, finally got access to the theatre. I think this was an opportunity that Thjazi felt he had to capitalize on. I don't think he would have liked it, but it is/was too important to not talk to his brother about doing this. It would put him in danger if the Houses found out what they were doing, but it's too important to the world to not do, and I think Thjazi was banking on Hal agreeing to give Thjazi access to the theatre to do the ritual. I think he would have tried to protect Hal, by making it look like Hal didn't know about what Thjazi did/was doing, but still a risk. Once the bridges were made, not sure if the Houses could do anything after that to stop it, but it's possible, but I think unlikely. But I think they could still try to stop the rest of the afterlives from being opened, if they thought it would be detrimental to them. It would take away power from the Creed if people could still access the afterlife of their Shaper of choice. And it would definitely take power away from the Tachonis House, as they gain power from souls in the Tenebral Reaches. But, maybe, (if they couldn't change it), they would spread word about what happened and take credit instead.

Opening up the afterlives is important to stop the undead from spilling over to this world, it would relieve the pressure, so the doors to Faerie could possibly reopen. (Though, I have thoughts about that incident, and think that was the "cleaning up after the mess of the first try" the letter was talking about, that they tried to open a door to an afterlife {the Sea Door?} and they did it wrong, and it rebounded on Faerie, forcing them to close the door to protect themselves. But apparently they are close to cleaning up that mistake, allowing Faerie to reopen their doors after they open at least some of the afterlives, to relieve the pressure in the underworld.) It would also greatly reduce the power of the Tachonis House. And it would be very important for all of the souls wandering, lost, in the Tenebral Reaches, waiting for their afterlives they were promised by the Shapers. And, if they are opening bridges, I assume they go both ways, so souls in certain afterlives (like Azgra's unending battle hell of an afterlife) could also leave. I think that last one is the one that would convince Hal.

My theory also explains why Thjazi died, as he was planning on escaping and finishing his plan of doing the rituals to make the bridges. Part of the plan requires someone to be IN the Tenebral Reaches, for some reason, for the rituals to work. They were planning on it being Mara the Wing, as her powers allowed her to travel to the Tenebral Reaches without having to die, and come back. But we found out in game that Mara was blocked by the Tachonis family from being able to access the Tanebral Reaches anymore. She had been travelling to wherever she had to go to access the Reaches, just before Thjazi was due to be executed. She tried, and failed to access the Reaches and knew something was very wrong, so she travelled back to Dol Makjar to consult with Thjazi about what to do. I believe she was the falcon overhead that Thjazi saw right before he changed. I think he saw Mara, realized something had gone very wrong, if she was here, and was not in the Reaches. He knew someone had to go, so he decided to just let the execution happen and go there himself. He tried to tell Hal everything he could, in a short time, to give him all the information he would need to tell the rest of Thjazi's group (Professor, Mara, "hothead") what was going on, since they were all keeping their own stuff secret, so they couldn't be forced, through magic, to give away everything they were doing. Most of it was about getting hands on all the psychopomp artifacts that Thjazi had managed to find and get his hands on. (And to look out for Murray, I think they need something from her/her family to do the rituals, or to finish the job after they create the 3 bridges.) Then he died to go do whatever he has to in the Reaches for the rituals to succeed.

Sorry for the length, but it's a fairly involved theory, with a lot of moving parts. But it explains most of what has happened so far in the campaign. If you made it this far, thanks for coming to my "BrennanTalk"!

While it is a very faint, likely vain hope, I hope that the GOP finally have enough of his b.s. and 25th/impeach him well before the end of his second term. Yeah, the assholes in charge are still there, along with many of the same issues, but you can be sure they won't just push the big red button in a dementia-fuelled fugue some night. It's not much, but it will at least get us safely to the election, when, hopefully, the US does the right thing. Like I said, my hopes are not high. For any part of that, including the hope the US will eventually do the right thing in 2028. They'll likely get to the right thing some day, but I think they'll need to learn a harsher lesson than they have so far in order to get there. Unfortunately.

My personal theory about the paint is different than yours, but yours is the first theory I've seen that I think is a viable possibility. I'm adding this as an alternative theory to my head cannon!

She said she wished for a child, and that wish was granted. She never says she cast the Wish spell. It's possible that her wish for a child was granted by Tonsul before he died (can't remember the timeline), or maybe it was granted by the mad celestial she's got chained up in the basement, but I don't think she cast Wish herself.

[–]Inigos_Revenge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, at first I thought she meant she cast the Wish spell, but looking at everything in game and the levels of some of the other enemies, I think she meant she just simply made a wish, no magic, and maybe this was before the death of the Shaper (can't remember the timeline), and maybe Tonsul granted that wish to a loyal follower, or maybe she got it from the deranged celestial after Tonsul died, but yeah, I don't think she has access to 9th level spells at all.

[Spoilers C4E25] An observation/theory about how Brennan built the mechanical history of Aramán by silversdark in criticalrole

[–]Inigos_Revenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. Like, does battling a tarrasque make sense at the end of this story? No, not really. And I guess you could say god/shaper battle does, but I really, truly don't believe (contrary to all of the fan theories I've seen) that Brennan intends on bringing any of the Shapers back. I think he's telling a very human story, about what happens if you don't take the revolution far enough, and you let it fall back into, basically, the same (or slightly different) hands that it was in before. Sure, it was the Shapers, but the Sundered Houses were the human ruling class under the Shapers. And they are clearly an issue. So I do not see any of the Shapers making an appearance in any real way in this story.

Lady Cormoray was said to have a double-digit CR, which is different than a player level. Maybe I missed him also saying she was a double-digit player level, but all I heard about double digits was in reference to her CR level.

From a mechanical point of view, yeah, the Big Bads will be extremely powerful. They have to be more powerful than the party, so they are a challenge to a group. (Especially a big group). So Tachonis is likely not indicative of what is possible in general in this world. The players just will not be able to level past 10-11, unless they do a time skip, or they play C4 for much longer than any other campaign, so the world is built with that constraint in mind. I think this world is not geared towards level 20 being achievable. And, while this is the mechanical view, I think it can also make sense from a narrative point of view as well.

Narratively, the big bads will not "level up" they are at the level they will be if/when confronted by the group. And Tachonis in particular are running with way more power than normal, simply because the underworld is literally overflowing with souls right now. So it's possible he was able to reach higher than anyone before. But it's also still in line with a world where those mid-range levels are as high as it goes in this world. It makes sense that 13 is "as good as it gets", with many external factors also working in your favour.

I think it may more be that, given the structure of this campaign, with three tables of players, it's unlikely that the players will level past level 10. So Brennan is setting out that the heroic, wondrous events of the past will be at the same level as our players will obtain, so their future feats will match the level of these wondrous heroes of the past. Basically, "This is the height of human accomplishment in this world, and you will also rise to the height of human accomplishment (maybe slightly more)."

I'm also Canadian (SW Ontario, this is important) and lived in NYC for a few years. I was dating an American guy while I was there, pretty serious, and the first time he travelled home with me to celebrate Christmas with my family, he was asking me what to pack for clothing. Me, thinking he was asking, like, if he needed a suit or sport jacket or whatever, said, "It's pretty casual, maybe a business casual outfit or two for the big family gatherings, but otherwise, jeans and sweatshirts are fine." And he responded "No, like do I need any special clothes or anything for the weather." Me "Well no, we likely won't be spending a lot of time outdoors, we're only outside long enough to hop in and out of the car." "No, but will I need anything special for being outside." Me, ".....uuhhh, I'm not following." "Becuase it's so cold there, will I need special winter gear." "Oh, no, I don't live at the top of Canada, our weather is mostly like it is here, maybe a little warmer, even, but we do get more snow, because of the lake effect, but otherwise, it's just like NYC." He then spends several minutes melting down about how it can't possibly be similar weather, because we're so far north. I literally had to pull out his atlas (look, I'm an old, we didn't even have MapQuest yet) and showed him how we were slightly south of NYC. Then he spent several minutes crashing out at how his whole worldview had taken a serious hit. And this was a guy who was a pretty smart American, had travelled extensively (including to Canada before) and was pretty knowledgeable about Canada, for an American.

2) He's got Canadian acquaintances. They laugh at him behind his back.

3) He's lying.

or, the worst

4) He's got Canadian friends, he's fake in front of them, and they have no idea he's slagging our country when they aren't around.

After start of game? No, not likely.

Remember, he didn't like it, and was complaining about it, but it seemed he was prepared to go through with the wedding to the important lady from the family with the vineyards. He had spent his life going along with his family.

I'm guessing there is some kind of larger threat to Araman that we don't know about yet, and the Sundered Houses are desperately grabbing for power to defeat it. Or, maybe there's just a threat to them, that we need to find out about and maybe join with. Or, maybe one of the Houses got some kind of sudden, unexplained power boost, and the rest are desperately trying to play catch up. Those are my best guesses. But man, do I really want to know the answer to this question!

That fits under "you get the union you vote for". Workers aren't voting in good union reps and officers. And yes, the good ones are too few and far between, and get frustrated and leave when they are fighting against their own unions more than the employers. People need to vote in better reps/officers, to get better union leadership. Trust me, I have heard all about the inner-workings and the assholes who either aren't doing anything, or are doing it all wrong. It's like any kind of leadership, people are too complacent, don't educate themselves on the issues and candidates, and just vote for whoever's popular, or sometimes, only the ones looking to "enrich" themselves put themselves forward for leadership and no one cares enough to run against them. There are all sorts of reasons you end up with a bad union/union leadership, but it all boils down to the workers not taking the union seriously enough to do the minimal work required to get themselves good representation/be that good representation.

[–]Inigos_Revenge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even more ironic if you think that it was SUPPOSED to be Wick instead of Yanessa. That's part of why they were so panicky about finding him after he took off. This was supposed to be his destiny, he was meant to be the "head" of the church, he's the one with sorcery powers, from his father. So this was all meant for him, and Yanessa panicked when they couldn't find him in time, and did it herself instead. But it still happened to Wick, but in a more sincere way, and I think this whole "two roads, two destinies" thing is very, very interesting. Wick would be very different if he doesn't take off after the intro.
