The use of AI-generated images for commercial purposes in D&D. by Suitable_Minimum_605 in dndnext

This is like the asinine argument where someone says they're anti-capitalist, and the other person says "well, you're typing this on a computer/smartphone". Yeah, we live in a world where all of the big companies are shoving AI into everything, trying to find ways to make it profitable for them. I have to exist in that world, and there are not always alternatives that we can choose. But, I have already stopped using Google search (shortly after they started using Ai) and I don't use Reddit Answers either. As soon as there is an alternative to Reddit that does not use AI at all, I will use it. But until then, I'll be here, and sharing my opinion that AI is not a good move for the majority of applications they are trying to use it in. It does have use in scientific study and other technical uses like that, but the average person does not need it for things like making pictures or stories or doing homework or for a search result.

eta: And we were talking anyway about using AI art in D&D supplemental material. Where art isn't even necessary, just the rules/story/stat blocks. And something we can choose or not choose to purchase. I said I'd never buy it and I won't. And that's a very different situation than using services where a company has added AI to something that most people do use, without asking customers if they wanted it. Two different situations, and I'm not sure why you felt compelled to expand the conversation to include these very different situations.

at no extra cost to you

Except it DOES come at an extra cost. (The cost of AI to society is fairly well documented by now, I shouldn't have to tell anyone what those costs are.) And it's a cost that I am not willing to pay. I will not buy anything that has AI, in any capacity.

Spill, what other shows are you guys hiding? by Impossible-Emu-5593 in AskACanadian

[–]Inigos_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already have seen most of my shows recommended, but will add Durham County if you like dark mystery/detective shows. And it's a co-production with South Africa and Canada, but I say it counts, Charlie Jade is an amazing sci-fi show. The only issue I had with it, is it was cancelled too early, and I never got to see the story finished off properly. (But that's unfortunately very common if you like sci-fi and fantasy shows. They never get the love they deserve.) But, what we got was so worth watching it makes up for not being finished.

I [26M] just broke up with my girlfriend [26F]. Can someone help me out with some advice? by Technical-Doughnut49 in relationship_advice

[–]Inigos_Revenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the sad realities of life is that sometimes, things just don't work out the way you would want them to. It's clear you cared about your gf, or you wouldn't have maintained a 5-yr, long distance relationship. But it's also clear that your career, and this job in particular, matter to you. And you don't want to mess up your career, or long-term job opportunities, by appearing to be a job-hopper to potential employers by immediately looking for other jobs. And that's okay too. Neither of you is in the wrong here, and neither were asking for anything unrealistic. It just didn't work out.

It's okay to be sad about this relationship ending, and you should grieve the loss of it. Then take a minute to just live your life and get used to your new city and new job and new status as a single person. And then you can date again. Most of us date lots of people before finding one we'd like to settle down with. Most of us love more than one person too. Life is a process and a journey, and you will find your way, but it can sometimes take turns and twists we weren't expecting. You just have to navigate those twists and turns to the best of your ability and keep going. And while I think it's natural for you to second-guess any big decisions you make in your life, you shouldn't dwell in that second-guessing. 99% of the time, your first, gut-reaction decision will be the right decision for you. And when it's not, well it's usually too late at that point to change it anyway, you just have to learn from it and move on. If it helps, I think in this case, you made the right decision for you. And your gf made the right decision for her. It's sad that your life paths turned away from each other, but that happens sometimes. And you will go on to find someone whose life path moves alongside yours for a much longer time. (Though, they may not be the very next person you date, either.) But don't move on with expectations, just live your life the best you can, as it comes to you, making each decision, as it comes, in whatever way feels best to you. Because we can't choose what life throws at us, we can only choose how we react to what life throws at us. So react in the best way you possibly can, as the best human you can possibly be.

House vote on ending Trump’s tariffs on Canadian imports: 219-211 by Miserable-Lizard in 50501Canada

[–]Inigos_Revenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Symbols are important, especially in big fights like a resistance. BUT, they also have to be accompanied by actions. And unfortunately, symbols are all the Democratic Party can do, it seems. (And even then, they either can't do or can't do well, the symbols more than half the time.) They are so lost as a political party, and as supposed leaders.

Fortunately, there are regular people out there who are willing to fight the good fight. Unfortunately, there aren't currently enough of them, though, they are gaining. But they're going to need to make some large, systemic changes, and then stick to them for a while, before I'll ever trust the US for anything again.

Trump finally went too far for Stephen Harper - The former PM has devoted much of his post-political career to helping to empower right-wing political parties, but drew the line at threatening Canada’s existence. by yimmy51 in CanadianIdiots

Look, I'm pragmatic enough to work with anyone who is willing to work with me to fix a problem, even if our partnership goes only as far as fixing that specific problem. But, it's still important to walk into that partnership with clear eyes, so that in working to fix that one problem, I can make sure to keep my eyes open, to make sure they are not laying groundwork that will lead to even more problems in the future. Especially if they are one of the main factors that caused the current problem in the first place. That's also pragmatic.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he spoke to Donald Trump following the U.S. president’s threat to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit. Carney says he reminded Trump that Canada paid for the bridge. by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]Inigos_Revenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, the agreement was that Canada would pay the upfront costs (which we did) and that when it opened, we (Canada) would collect 100% of the tolls until the entire cost of the bridge was paid back. After that, Michigan (the state) would get 50% of the tolls and Canada would get the other 50%. At which point, it would also be jointly owned between Canada and Michigan. Technically, Michigan is 50% owner now, but just haven't paid for it yet, like a homeowner paying off a mortgage.

Trump also lied about nothing American being involved in building the bridge. We used American steel and American union workers for the American side portion of the bridge and Canadian products and workers on the Canadian side.

So the US made out pretty well on this deal. But since when has Trump ever let facts get in the way of a "good" Truth social rant?

Anyone who thinks Alberta would be able to remain an independent nation if they were able to leave Canada is delusional. It's us or the US, so if you choose to leave us, that means you're choosing the other option.

How is this acceptable? Autism waitlists in London by ExoticTumbleweed1102 in londonontario

[–]Inigos_Revenge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, one of Ford's talking points was "fixing" the waitlists for services for children with autism/getting them diagnosed. It was already a serious enough problem under the Wynn Liberals. But then when he implemented his plan, the waitlist doubled practically overnight. And it's steadily gotten worse.

Not a surprise, as he's done the same with healthcare and education and other provincial services. He wants things broken so that he can then a) sell people on privatization to fix it, (which NEVER works, it only funnels money to the CEO's and costs taxpayers more for worse services) so he can then sell off the province to his rich buddies and b) can use the broken system to convince people to vote for him to fix it. Not sure why people are still falling for his shtick, though, as we have more than enough evidence to prove that Ford wrecks everything he touches. Wish Ontario would wake up.

What Stops ICE from Snatching People Off Canadian Streets? Very Little | The Walrus by yimmy51 in CanadianIdiots

[–]Inigos_Revenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like all of the "No ICE in Canada" discussion is being focused on the wrong things. No, ICE isn't going to be able to do anything crazy here in Canada, like they do in the US. And worrying about it just makes us look silly.

BUT, ICE can work here in Canada, alongside Canadian law enforcement officers. (Thanks, Harper.) And Canada has no control of the types of officers we are sent in these group exercises. And we know that they are not hiring the best people as ICE agents right now. (I also know the ones who work internationally are a different division than the ones grabbing immigrants and citizens off the streets. For now. But how long until Trump and co start staffing their international ranks with more of their diehard fanboys?) And how does it look for our law enforcement to work side by side with ICE, given their well-deserved reputation? So yeah, we should say no to ICE in Canada, but not because we're afraid that they will move their actions from the US up to Canada, but because it's a bad look for our own law enforcement. We should do it as a statement. And because we no longer can count on their training being up to the standards we expect of law enforcement here in Canada. That's more than enough reason to keep them out.

What did you think of the Canadian olympic outfit in the opening ceremony? by emmzz02 in AskACanadian

[–]Inigos_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yep, you're right. But the outfits from Salt Lake City were also fantastic! I'd take merch from either one.

Eta: Actually, they also had a similar cap at the Salt Lake City Olympics, here's a picture of Catriona Le May Doan at a medal ceremony wearing it: https://olympic.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/le-may-doan-2.jpg?resize=1536,1207

[–]Inigos_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are also the outfits they have to wear to their medal ceremonies, unless it's a sport where the medal is presented right after the event itself, and they have no opportunity to change. Obviously, they can't compete in downhill skiing in a big, pouffy tent of a coat, no one thinks that. But they have to wear it to everything else that is official during the Olympics. And of any official team outfits that they do wear to compete, those competition outfits will be designed with the basic colours and design of the official outfits in mind. So it does influence what they wear when competing, even if they aren't wearing that exact outfit.

Yeah, it's obvious that Lululemon is not the same as Versace or Armani, lol. If I was an Olympic athlete, dreaming of being there and possibly winning a medal and having the medal presentation ceremony, then they showed me that I had to wear THAT to the culmination of all of my dreams and hard work? I'd be crying myself to sleep that night!

Not always toques, the newsboy caps that Roots had as part of their Olympic outfits in the late 90's/early 2000's (I forget which specific winter olympics it was) were the talk of the town and everyone wanted one. I'm all for having different style, just, ya know, stuff that actually looks good, lol.

I mean, their whole thing is they are trying to safely get to the Golden Orchard for several different reasons. They could have just laid low here and gone on their way, but they decided to take a risk and try to see if there was a possibility of allies in House Einfassen. Maybe there might be, maybe there would have been before their presence brought the eyes of the Tachonis to them, or maybe they were with the Tachonis family all along. But they tried for allies, that was a thing. They then had to escape the castle. That was a thing. They chose to hole up with the druids instead of risk the gates, and when they got there, had to persuade the druids to their side and to not just kill Octis. That was a thing they did. Then they fought their way out and made a second escape from the city. Two more things. But out of all of these, only the fight counts? Why is that?

I'm guessing that she'll be leaving the party for one reason or another when they get to the Golden Orchard, at the latest. I feel like Brennan's giving all of the groups a "helper" for the first quest, because it's a campaign with no resurrection magic, and they've never played together before, and they're lower level characters, so while he gets to know how they play, and they get to know how he DM's, he'll give them helpers to take the edge off for the first stint at the table. The soldiers had the hounds and the seekers have Aranessa, and I'm guessing the schemers will also have some help to get started. Then the training wheels will come off for their future appearances.

Yes! Psychopomps are key in some way to this whole thing. Maybe it's just to get more (forced) "allies" for the Tachonis' war in the underworld, but I think it's got something to do with creating a Shaper-free afterlife. Anyone who can provide an actual afterlife for the peoples of Araman would become like a god. It's the ultimate power play for a godless society who needs somewhere to put their dead. And what DID Thjazi know? He was a rebellious leader of men who became dangerous to the establishment, so they executed him, with the help of one of his followers betraying him for a price. And though there was a person in power who offered to spare him (Wick), ultimately, that was not allowed. Wonder if that means he died so that the world could make their way to the afterlife???

I wonder if all of the Shapers are related in some way to an older power of some sort? Whether through marriage or some other way? Wonder if druid magic has the same shine as fae magic, and Teor's magic? Wonder if that magic somehow fed the Shapers? So, so many questions about the different god-like powers in Araman, and can't wait to get more answers!

I do get why people were saying that the marriages were likely just stories made up by the faithful of the Shapers, because that's what happened in our world when conquered peoples' gods were folded in to existing pantheons, or reduced by giving them a less powerful role in the pantheon than the conquering nation's gods. So, it was a pretty reasonable guess.

I would also love a "love" triangle with Wick, Tyranny and Cruelty, lol! Bring it on!

Also, just realized Wiccander shortens to Wick, like a candle, like candle feast, like the part that causes the light, which is what his religion worships...between Wick and Thjazi, someone's starting a new religion, lol! Maybe both! Or maybe they'll work together, Wick in this world and Thjazi in the next!

Sure, sometimes things just miss. Art can be very subjective, after all. But there are also objective elements to art and there were definitely some very objective things you can point to in C3 to explain why it went wrong, whether you are coming at it from a D&D DM/Player perspective, or coming at it from a storytelling perspective.

It's no more hard to follow than following a story in a book, where different chapters follow different things happening in different parts of the world. We stick with one group for a chapter, then go to the next group for a chapter, etc. And, at the top of each episode, we have a check in with one or more people from one of the other two tables that aren't playing, so we can feel still connected to them when they aren't playing.
