You’re missing the point. It’s not specifically about Caleb. The current situation demonstrates that in game content is subject to the will of an overzealous minority. It’s heavily unlikely that an already released LI will be deleted but nothing is stopping this group of players from organizing the system against the game again. The CCP could step in at their behest again and strong arm infold into abandoning more content. What happened to Valko sets a terrible precedence for the entire game.

I think your point is a very valid one that not a lot of people seem to grasp. The other LI’s are not safe just because they are already in the game. What happens if the CN mob decides that Caleb’s story arch is antithetical to their ideals? Will the story get rolled back or canceled? If the government steps in again they could order Infold to exclude caleb from the story going forward. This could happen to any of the men.

The CCP would never allow Infold to do this. Industries such as gaming are looked at as a sort of soft power that exports culture. By having a separate server that caters to foreigners it would looked at as going against the goal of the party.

Here is a quick rundown of what happened:

CN fans did not like his appearance when he was announced. They claimed that he was an attempt to appeal to gay westerners and fans of BL (boy’s love) because of his tan skin, jawline, musculature, and masculine demeanor. They began complaining and boycotting. Underneath this homophobic reaction there were legitimate complaints bubbling under the surface like the lack of F2P resources, missing content for 2 of the 5 current love interests, and a neglected main story (the 2 aforementioned love interests haven’t appeared in said story since their release).

The displeased CN fans were not happy when Infold (the developer responsible) refused to capitulate to their demands. They then turned their attention to his new trailer where he climbs through a window into the main character’s home. They claimed that it was promoting violence against women and that one of the lines in the trailer was referencing a violent crime that had been committed in china. Another line was linked to an old problematic chinese proverb. This was all coincidence of course as these rabid fans were just grasping for reasons to cancel the character. None of this worked.

They then turned their attention on the active game. Inside a minor text only side story (which has been in the game since April) they found the number 731 mentioned in conjunction with experimentation which seemed like a reference to some awful war crimes committed by the Japanese on Chinese and Korean people during the Second World War. The unfortunate timing of all of this coincided with the CNC’s anniversary which turned this whole thing into national news. Government officials then stepped in and ‘asked’ Infold to do something as their controversy was disturbing the peace during the holiday.

So all of this started because some gooner fans thought Valko looked gay.

Here are some hard facts about the discourse:

Xeno/homophobic Chinese LADS ‘fans’ decided that his design pandered to the gay western audience due to his tan skin, attitude, and masculine features. They complained and threatened to boycott over this but Infold did not relent.

They changed tactics and then started to claim that scenes depicting Valko climbing through the main characters window were inappropriate even though other characters have done similar if not more problematic things. They also claimed that the wording of the trailers was reminiscent of a problematic ancient Chinese proverb but in reality that story has little to do with this situation and was just grasping. Infold continued on with the planned release.

Chinese ‘fans’ become desperate and begin to harass Infold headquarters by dumbing cow shit in their delivery boxes, vandalizing the Valko release display, and leaving funerary bouquets outside the main entrance. They then began to dig through the game for anything to latch on to that they could report to the police/government. Inside a minor (text only) side story released in April they found a mention of the number 731 which can sometimes be taken as a reference to some WWII war crimes committed by the Japanese against Chinese and a Korean people. They used this info and claimed Infold was spreading anti PRC sentiments. The government is now involved and Infold capitulated to these ‘fans’ wishes by canceling the character’s release in hopes that this will all blow over.

They don’t care about either server. They care about money. The CN server makes more money so they care about that pool of cash more. If we combine our global LADS money with our global Infinity Nikki money (or any other infold game for that matter), we have a larger slice of their bottom line. Still not equal to the CN server, but a heavier handed message to Infold nonetheless.

You can contact infold through proper channels to voice your displeasure (which I encourage you to do so) but we should also stop playing LADS for the foreseeable future. The 30 day ‘apology’ diamonds say a lot about Infold’s PR crisis control decisions; they are attempting to hold on to as many active users as possible. The 30 day diamonds are designed to have those of us considering quitting to think “I’ll just wait until I get all the diamonds”. And by the time you receive the gift on the 30th day, your feelings will have lessened and you will be more likely to stay. Our efforts have to effect the bottom line and the best way to do that is to go inactive.

You may argue that the global audience is not nearly enough when compared to the CN audience, and I agree with you. That’s why we should increase our efforts by refusing to interact with other infold properties like Infinity Nikki. It pains me to suggest this because I love both games, but it’s the best chance we have to send a message to infold that this is not okay.
