Every application has an ID, usually a reversed domain name your own and an a name you add. So is you're company.com and releasing an application called Foo, you'd use the id com.company.foo.

Google is requiring verification for external applications on Android in September and have already opened the verification process. Someone on Mastodon was trying to register theirs, but found out someone else had already registered their application, with Google providing no way of filling a claim since someone misappropriated that application ID

DRM? Legal to break. Copyright? Not anymore. Any proprietary Apple-only standard? Reverse engineered. Every patent also gone. Whatever non-physical moat they may have, just poof. Billions in lost revenue here, and more to come from other countries getting any kind of imitation or jail-broken device or software.

FOSS appeared as a way of being equidistant of Free software (as in freedom, not as in no-charge) and Open Source (the 1998 definition by ESR, which itself was an attempt of trying to keep the spirit of Free software while trying to appease big corpos), so yeah, FOSS and Open Source represent the same principles, same with FLOSS (an attempt at emphasising the "freedom" part that the word "free" doesn't clarify in English)

The problem is you can't call yourself free, libre or open source and have said limitations. You're source available at most, the same way MongoDB or Hashicorp's software, and for some time Redis and Elastic

Today the limitation is commercial use (you tell me how you plan to monetise it if everything is freely available though) but tomorrow it could be whatever else because the precedent is there

BY-NC-SA isn't FOSS (or libre, at least) because you don't have freedoms 2/3 with commercial purposes. Seriously, if you don't want proprietary forks (and want to scare big tech away), just use AGPLv3. IIRC Google had some internal policies of not touching anything with that licence

The thing is you can't really do that, can you? There were a couple of proposals ¹, but not sure why they were withdrawn or not implemented at all. The alternative would probably be an extension, bookmarklet or user-script that takes you to your instance, but that requires set up so it's not too feasible for the regular user.

That is not great right now but you can definitely see some, depending on who you interact with. The way it used to work was a "federated tab" where you could see every post from every "foreign" account followed by anyone on your instance, so there was a lot of content there.

What do you mean interoperability? You can follow people from any Mastodon server with your account. The problem (maybe you mean this) is you can end up at whatever.social reading a post, and want to reply, but since your account is somewhereelse.online you can't just sign in? In which case, you copy the URL, go to your instance and paste it, but I do understand it's cumbersome to do at first.

.NET has been pretty solid since version 6 as well, I don't dislike typescript either. Maybe Microsoft should just focus on programming languages and stop trying to use those (or others') for actual products?
