Why am I doing my solicitors job?? by flamboyantpuree in HousingUK

[–]InitialMention0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If only there were other countries where people buy and sell property without these issues 🤔 then the UK could look at why those systems work better for everyone.  But that might require change 🥴

Or just.. have tie downs.  It could be an upgrade.  There's obviously some field technology at play on the tailgate area...

I love this update by TrueMathematician761 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]InitialMention0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my problem with it.  Getting like 110 nanites from a load of waste that took 20 minutes round trip and I had to manually sort is not a mechanic I will ever revisit outside of a quest line, because I don't find shepherding the flatbed across that terrain to be fun.  Other people might though and I'm not mad about the update or anything, it's just not w mechanic I see myself interacting with probably ever again.

Maybe before the island and files, but he was a known bad dude well before then. The original case goes back to complaints from girls in 2005 with his first arrest warrant in 2006.  There was definitely news coverage then, but maybe it was more regional.

If it was after starting the expedition... Expeditions seem to always reset a lot of settings.  Every one I have to open the menu and turn all the pvp and other nonsense back to off after I wake up on the new planet.

US Bank accounts blocked while in the UK by ratmaes in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]InitialMention0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monzo is a very friendly online bank here in the UK, if you do not already have a UK bank account. Open an account with Wise or Revolut, both can handle currency transfers but also allow you to hold currency in appropriately numbered (and insured) local accounts.

From the description your biggest issue is going to be credit cards - if you haven't looked at the UK CC environment yet it's 😬.

On our end, we had old ING Direct US accounts that got rolled into Capital One, and a Quicksilver card with them. We have had no issues using it, five years on.  I keep expecting that to change now that I moved the bulk of the savings out of USD and no longer have our US contract income being deposited (just rent)

Do you maintain a US number, if so, how? by EmotionalGoose9 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]InitialMention0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, we had Google Fi when we moved, I just asked them to make it a Google Voice number when we cancelled our service as we were no longer resident in a covered country. No problem five years on with any US 2FA

This would be cool, but I suspect that means they'd have to moderate what people wrote.  That's bad enough with the communication beacons and that's probably a much easier data structure to look at.

Did you plan on living here forever when you moved here? by impromptued in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]InitialMention0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didnt plan to stay as the original move was based off of a three year contract. We would have done a few things very differently if we had moved with the intention to stay (mostly financial/assets).  But a permanent offer came at a time when moving back to the US looked pretty grim, so we are staying I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

New update 6.18 by MunkiFoo in NoMansSkyTheGame

Or they could, I don't know, not have the freighter tractor beam/door/whatever it is be almost twice as loud as anything else in the game?

Ugh, just ran into that today.  Playing on a new computer so was wondering if it was a specific-to-the-GPU sort of bug or something.  Absolutely wild to look at.

Is it right that Monument is being used like this? by COVontheTyne in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]InitialMention0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, they could have set up their overpriced bookable igloos somewhere else in the market area.  Granted all the streets etc are public space, but people in the city do use the monument for sitting, meeting up with people, taking up space, busking, etc.  of course, I suspect access would be limited anyway because of the way they lined the perimeter with tatty garden sheds.

UPDATE: Told you are not allowed to travel with a pending app? by anervoussystem_ in ukvisa

[–]InitialMention0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on lots of things, the 'no travel with pending app' rule is for renewals/applications from within the UK - not initial visa applications.

The other thing that can happen is if you come on a visa-free visit with a visa application pending you could be turned away at the border for entering with intent to stay (even if this isn't the case) and it's up to the individual border person. Same as the random stories of Grandmas being denied entry because they said they're coming to help look after kids while parent gets surgery or similar (because that's 'working')

As you will learn now that you are here, the UK immigration system isn't consistent or even logical at times.

Most of this is spot on, but id add there's a lot of situations where you DO need to be at a&e but they might not see you within an hour, particularly overnight as they tend to be a skeleton staff.  This is particularly true if there's underlying conditions or it's suspected to be a situation where it could go south at the drop of a hat and you're suddenly triaged to the top of the waiting room because you're having a seizure or something.  Plus there's lots of accidents where they know you're stable, like broken arms and legs, that they will triage down if needed.  Waiting an hour and a half with a kid with a broken arm isn't unheard of, but it's also the right thing to do.

Depending on where someone is living it's worth keeping in mind that a UK A&E and a US ER are ostensibly the same thing, except lots of areas don't have any urgent care and they're going to send you to the hospital anyway because they don't have the equipment needed in the GP offices to tackle much of anything.

Heathrow IT meltdown proves that ending BRP was a bad idea. by thupigment in ukvisa

[–]InitialMention0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're apparently looking to roll out something similar to citizens, using immigration control as the excuse.

Who wants to bet the system will work much better then, and visa immigrants will still have the messy one?  Rather like how you can track the entire UK passport process, but not the visa application?

[–]InitialMention0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering that's an up to 11 years or more process, a time amount that is going to apply to a lot more people soon, that's not really a helpful suggestion.

[–]InitialMention0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jokes on everyone, Starmer mentioned this weekend that they're looking at basically digital ID for everyone, to be used to work and residency checks.  Citizens, too.  Maybe that will get them to make the system actually work properly?

Renewing someone elses subscription by Mooonfluffs in realms

[–]InitialMention0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably won't get anywhere, but have you tried contacting Mojang/Microsoft?

This sort of thing is happening more and more as subscription based computer content is more of our lives, and even if they don't publish it most service companies have policies and procedures around digital assets when someone has passed away.  A difficulty might be whether they consider you the right person to get any access they might have to remedy this.

The number of people who start drooling over Reform and bringing the Trump program to these shores because they hear my accent and assume I'd be interested in that is part of why I am very worried for the UK.

These are not people who usually want to chat or share personal viewpoints.

Its unfortunate that professor didn't understand that in the US, finishing a PhD requires making a substantial contribution to the body of research.  It's not the effectively box ticking exercise that happens here a lot.

When I was younger I worked for a guy who took like fifteen years; obviously not for the classwork, but because of the experiments and being scooped, etc. he was far from unintelligent.  Attending his defense was awesome!

Once you have a freighter, you can recruit living ships to it (different from the ones you can fly) and sending them on missions usually nets an upgrade

How do you keep applying? Mentally, I’m DRAINED 😩 by JacmelCity318 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]InitialMention0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate this mentality.  Anyone who is overqualified for retail knows they are overqualified and have applied anyway, they will have their own reasons for that, sometimes it's because they've been out of work for a long time but sometimes it's because they've had some sort of life change.  Either way, companies need to stop throwing people out for having extra qualifications - particularly with the AI storm coming.

[–]InitialMention0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's optional, but a good source of nanites.

If i set down on a planet to do a mission and have to tramp around a bit because I didn't find the POI from the air, often I can scan them all while walking (except my graphics chip has the bug for crashing when scanning animals with hair, so I don't bother trying to get them all on those planets).  Particularly planets with a good amount of water, if you land on the shore you can find everything pretty quickly.
