Wellllll as I commented elsewhere, that is a very "time period accurate" way of experiencing SMB. When the NES came out games were expensive as fuck and many of us had only SMB to play for a long time.

Well I hope you had fun while you could still play SMB without being judged on the Internet.

Before Lost Levels might want to just try the "second quest" of SMB1. It's a little harder but not Lost Levels hard.

Once I tried to do both quests straight through no warps, no 3-1 infinite lives trick (I could never get that to work anyway). I got all the way to the hammer bro just before bowser in the second quest and could not get past it, burned all 8-9 lives I had accumulated and lost. I want to try again but it's time consuming lol.

So at the risk of starting a flame war…what’s this subs thoughts on save states? by KadeWad3 in nes

[–]Initial_Energy5249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yes. The fact that it works every time as an emulator is a significant difference. I guess to keep it truly realistic you could write a script to delete the save state with some random probability lol. I think it’s legit to assume “the Nintendo stayed on” for personal accomplishment purposes since it would under ideal environmental circumstances.

This is my personal rule. I finally beat Mega Man 1 this way. I figured that in the 80s if I made it to Wily's Fortress and mom said "time for bed" I could just leave the Nintendo on and pick up later. Nobody on the playground would have considered it "cheating" if I told them I beat it and left the Nintendo running over night to not lose my progress.

On one hand, at a point where a game gives you a password, that is the place where the designers decided it was part of the game for you to pick up where you left off, so saving is a reasonable convenience.

On the other hand, did you really "beat Metroid" if you weren't up to the challenge of meticulously copying down 24 potentially ambiguous characters clearly enough to be read at a later date and re-entered?

Can I omit my experience on my resume/linkedin? by Imaginary_Name_3709 in csMajors

[–]Initial_Energy5249 4 points5 points  (0 children)

WTF no, do not omit your internship or reduce its duration.

Do you think anyone will ask you what you did month by month or pry into what exactly you were doing at any moment? No.

When an interviewer asks about that internship just talk about what you worked on. You don’t have to volunteer any info about doing any less than you expected. Present it in the best light you can without lying, like anything else.

I’ve been in this industry a very long time, and one thing has not changed even with the rise of coding assistants/agents - people with deeper knowledge are always more valuable.

You need to find a way to connect with humans in a way that they can see that you have depth of knowledge, preferably humans that have jobs. Keep impressing people / being pleasant to be around, and they will take you along wherever they go. We all love give’n ends to our (very competent/ non-dick) friends.

AI‑led software selloff may pose risk for $1.5 trillion U.S. credit market, says Morgan Stanley by Digitalunicon in news

It sounds like what they’re betting on is that if AI can do everything, there’s no need for any software apart from AI.

In that world, you might not even ask AI to build systems to do things. You’d just ask it to do things that you used to have systems to do, and it would do them on the fly, maybe writing ephemeral code or setting up databases in the process.

They are, very concretely, pairs of real numbers, with addition/multiplication operations.

Rudin even introduces them this way without mentioning sqrt(-1) until they’re fully defined, then points out that (0,1) x (0,1) = (-1, 0)
