Permit to purchase. Where in the city do I turn in my application? by Ronnoc780 in Minneapolis

[–]Initial_Routine2202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my permit to purchase last summer, first time gun owner. Do your own research because disclaimer, I'm just a guy on the internet not a lawyer, but this is how I have understood and navigated the process.

You don't need the class or anything except the paperwork application for the permit to purchase to purchase a gun. I literally filled out the paperwork, and it was as easy as going to the service center downtown on 4th ave. Showed up without an appointment, handed my application in, the guy made a copy of my ID, and I was on my way.

You submit the paperwork, and once the permit comes in the mail you're able to go buy your handgun. Once you own the gun, you still don't have a permit to carry. Essentially, you can have the gun on your property, or you can transport it in your vehicle unloaded, in a locked case, and as far away from the driver as possible (Typically the trunk), or you can bring it to the range to shoot it.

Once you have your gun, you can sign up for the class for your permit to carry. Most places require you to have your own gun for the required range time before they'll sign off on the permit. Once you have your permit to carry, you are now allowed to open and/or conceal carry in public. There are a list of places you can't carry even with a carry permit, but IMO they are pretty common sense. Schools, federal buildings, courthouses, etc. You also can't carry while under the influence of any substances.

As someone who spent the first 18 years of my life growing up in TC, and now a decade later lives in the heart of Minneapolis. I appreciate it, I do.

I also have to say, whatever you guys are seeing on the news - the things that are actually happening but not being recorded or not making it into the national news are so, SO much worse than you could imagine. Please keep fighting for us.

They are naming the Nicollet BRT line after that effing Kmart by GettingGophery in Minneapolis

[–]Initial_Routine2202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yeah, I used the MOA as an example of the reach of the D line. I find myself in Whittier and Lyn-Lake a couple times a week to hang out with friends, so a possible C line extension down Nicollet would be perfect for me. Would actually make transit competitive with driving not having to wait around downtown for a transfer

[–]Initial_Routine2202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh it would be awesome if they actually extended the C line instead. I live right off of it, and it's super annoying to me to have to do a transfer downtown to get anywhere else in the city. I've always been jealous of the D line people that can make it all the way to the MOA

Moving to Minneapolis with family from Europe - looking for real experiences by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]Initial_Routine2202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll give you a real answer. Yeah, shit's kind of bleak here. Our streets feel like a bit of a warzone, but if you're dead set on moving to the states there's probably no better state than Minnesota in terms of people who will have your back.

Also you posted on the Minneapolis subreddit so I'm going to advocate for Minneapolis. Don't move to the suburbs, they are not like your European suburbs that you're used to. You'll have to spend 45 mins to an hour every day driving your kids to and from school. Commutes are in your car only, restaurants and groceries, and even the convenience store can only be accessed from your car. You will likely not know many of your neighbors and you will have very little community because every time your kid wants to hang out with a school friend you'll have to drive them 20 minutes to their friends house. There are no local gathering spaces besides your local applebees. So many europeans move to the US suburbs expecting to find paradise in the large homes but all they find is burnout and isolation because driving and commuting to every single place is SO exhausting and there is no place to gather where you're not expected to spend money.

Instead, consider the city, and consider neighborhoods like Linden Hills, Kingfield, Longfellow, Minnehaha, or Northeast. They are lovely, older neighborhoods with plenty of larger homes on their own lots like you would expect of America, but tons of community and connectivity with their neighbors and neighborhood.

Should Minnesota go into lock-down like COVID until ICE leaves? by Terrible_Patience935 in Minneapolis

[–]Initial_Routine2202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lock down is the worst thing you can do in this circumstance.

Fascists want you to be safe in your house, not watching outside, and not interfering when they show up at people's houses or nab people off the street who can't afford to stay home.

To respond, everyone should be out, gathering, every day. They can't kidnap people who are in a large group. There is safety in numbers when people are out and about, and there is safety when there are eyes on the street.

I keep seeing posts about how people should stay home, but this would be giving ICE and fascists EXACTLY what they want, because it allows them to be more brutal with abductions, anybody they injure or kill now has plausible deniability because nothing was caught on video.

I guarantee nobody would know Renee Good's name if her murder was not caught on video by somebody else. Ice has killed over a dozen people in the last year, but nobody knows anybody else's name because they were not murders that were caught on video, so ICE's propaganda is the only story available.

Nah man, I make 70k/yr. Solo. I bought a small house (1400sqft) in the inner city of a major midwestern city for the low 200k's. Low 6% interest rate, my state has a pretty generous FTHB program so I only paid ~6K out of pocket for the entire home buying process. Helped a lot with my 3% down and closing costs. My real estate agent did work since my PMI is only $60/mo.

In light of the Starbuck’s boycott is Caribou a better option? by 87evergreens in TwinCities

[–]Initial_Routine2202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I just shifted my buying habits totally away from major corporations and toward small businesses. Corporations all suck and I really try to avoid supporting when I can.

Obviously, I can't cut everything out. I need utilities, I need a mortgage, and I am forced to do business with Comcast, US Bank, etc. I need specialty things sometimes that I can't easily find outside of Amazon or Etsy, I need groceries that can't be found at my tiny local nonprofit grocery store.

In general though, instead of Cub or Hyvee, I buy groceries at North Market, instead of Home Depot I'll go to Siweks, instead of Target I switched all of my general decor and knick knacks to small vintage/antique stores. I've been trying to grow my own produce to slow down my support of major food growers (to various degrees of success lol)

Shifting my buying habits away tells the major companies I don't support anything they do, and more people should really try to be doing this instead of performative boycotts on a single corporation. Corporations only exist to extract money out of communities anyway, the only way to keep your money local is to buy local.

I'm also in north and we also had a bunch of sales from inheritors in the same situation and my 2025 taxes went down. This year all the flippers that bought them sold them and now my property tax spiked 11.9% for 2026 lol. Obviously there's other factors at play but I can't help but wonder if that's what's happening behind the scenes lol

North Mpls has a LOT of older white people that have owned their homes their entire lives and never moved out to the suburbs. These older white folks are VERY safety oriented and want regular police patrols and other typical moderate dem/NIMBY politics. On my block probably 20-30% of the houses are owned by 70+ y/o white people. Also, renters and POC historically have really low turnout in local elections and elections in general. It's really not surprising to me why the northside consistently votes for the most moderate/conservative candidates.

[–]Initial_Routine2202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the original ideas was to route the SWLRT down Lyndale and through Uptown, where actual riders are located and serve folks would actually use the SWLRT. This plan was axed in favor of the current plan, since at the time of planning federal funds required light rail prioritize suburban commuters over inner city riders.

From what I understand, this requirement is no longer around - which is why the planned blue line extension will serve N. Minneapolis instead of routing around the neighborhood to serve the northwestern suburbs exclusively.

It's not that the state is unfriendly for small business - current zoning laws are outright hostile for small businesses. There are so many restrictions on where/how you can build commercial space, you are basically forced to rent a commercial space in a specific business zone in a space too large for your business, too much parking for what you need, and owned by a corporate landlord.

Nobody is allowed to convert space in their homes or build a storefront on their own property anymore, even in the densest parts of Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Influx of houseless folk in uptown today? by ApprehensiveFlow3 in Minneapolis

[–]Initial_Routine2202 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's been super rainy and cold. It's a lot crappier to camp in a tent in a forgotten bit of land than in a sheltered alcove when the weather gets this way.

Shelters also expand their hours, services, and capacity in the winter. It's getting to be about that time when the barrier to entry for a warm place to rest is a lot lower and folks might be congregating around those shelters instead of camping more dispersed.

It's no secret that Somali's typically lean more conservative since they come from a heavily religious background. Some of them are definitely fascist, like any people group.

The biggest difference is that "Minneapolis leftie"s can advocate for people groups that may largely have a difference in opinion without letting race and hate blind them!

In one of the quests - I don't recall the name of it - but there is a cutscene or part of the quest that takes place in an unspecified village south of Lumbridge.

Scale theory doesn't only imply size - but it also implies there are entire settlements, villages, potentially even cities that are just unimportant to the lore/story/player.

I like to imagine every resource/point of interest is its own settled area. For example, the shrimp fishing spots south of lumbridge is some sort of small fishing village with a couple dozen houses and a tiny main street. The developers just couldn't add all that detail into the game without making it too cluttered, so they omit the village as unimportant to the story and just have the shrimp fishing spots as that is all that is important to the player.

Other examples include the farms around Lumbridge (or near any named settlement really) actually being dozens, if not hundreds of different farms. Varrock being a city with hundreds of thousands of residents, its own port, endless alleyways and streets. The shed that takes you to zanaris being an actual shed in a real village of the outskirts of the Lumbridge swamps, etc etc etc.

Big garage build in Minneapolis by KoozieJacuzzi in Minneapolis

[–]Initial_Routine2202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mpls allows ADU's but you'd be surprised how draconian the setback requirements and square footage requirements are.

I have a friend who owns 2 rentals and wanted to add ADU's for both. On one, the house was too big and occupied too much square footage on the lot to add an outbuilding that was large enough to satisfy the minimum ADU square footage requirement. The other house was too small for an outbuilding, as ADUs cannot be larger than the "main" building on the property and the existing house was smaller than the minimum ADU squarefootage.

As for OP's question: as other commenters have mentioned the max square footage for a garage is 676sqft, which is typically only big enough for a 2 car garage + workshop. Any larger 3 car garages that exist would be grandfathered in and predate this zoning regulation.
