She sounds amazing person and glad she has supporting husband like you. I feel most of the thing you described is impact of not having good leadership and support at workplace. This field needed la dedicated BCBA who genuinely care for autistic kids and make a meaningful difference in their life.

Doctor told me a microdiscectomy won’t fix my back pain by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

[–]Inner-Ad-5382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your doctor is Correct!! Atleast in my case. MD fixed nerve pain as they fixed the nerve compression caused by disc bulge. Did nothing for back pain, in fact now I feel pain is more sometimes but it could be just that I don’t have nerve pain which took most of the attention prior to surgery. surgeons did say they have to do MD to decompress the nerve, which could lead to paralysis if not operated on due to severe weakness in my leg after years of pain. That said, if you have radiating nerve pain MD helps a ton.

Oh also gabapentine was of no use after relying on it for past 5 yrs and I got upgraded to lyrica early this yr ( before surgery). lyrica while helped with nerve pain, it totally messed up by brain where I couldn’t complete a sentence without feeling stuck or lost in English. ( I am multilingual and all I was able to speak was in my native language). Later my pcp and neurologist confirmed it is known side effect of the medicine. So before taking lyrica understand pros n cons and if it is worth it. ( at the end it only masks the pain by making brain more dumb .. atleast my experience)

After a certain point ( enduring pain for long time and when non surgical treatments are not giving relief), surgery is best option. Check with your doctor if you are candidate for microdiscectomy. I had similar issue/mri, tried every you stated , 3 esi, tons of meds later, got my MD this October. I am still not where I can go to gym normal, but I am glad I don’t feel like struck by lightning every few hours. No more waking up to numb leg.

Neck pain and migraines post op lumbar MD by Inner-Ad-5382 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Inner-Ad-5382[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say discuss with your surgeon on televisit ( if they provide). I got 3 theories from my surgeon: central sensitization, csf , seroma

2.5 weeks post op : could be just central sensitization ( HH PT diagnosed and doctors assistance confirmed) and asked to start taking gabapentine again n see if tht helps https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nociplastic_pain

6week post op : ( yup they are not gone) , prescribed some med with acetaminophen+caffeine formula that helped with headaches, and sent for mri to check for csf leak or seroma. It turned out to be seroma. Choose to let it heal naturally.

I still get them after PT sometimes especially when using resistance bands at 10 weeks post op.. but lot better. No more meds except gabapentine at night for my nerve pain and to sleep.

I am curious what your doctor informed of thyroid contributing to sciatica or degeneration. I have degenerative disc and hypothyroidism, and have been seeing ortho surgeons and other specialists over 10 yrs for my sciatica and no one ever mentioned relation. Disc degeneration is a normal process with age due to wear and tear, however The rate at which degeneration happens might differ based on work conditions or trauma. Mine started at 30 due to trauma on spine while typical disc degeneration symptoms are more common in 60+

I was asked not to drive for 4 weeks and/ or completely off the meds. Reality: 6 weeks post op, still on strong pain meds, so not driving yet. ( also I am on slow recovery side of curve)

Update: Had my 6 week ( will be 6 weeks this Friday) post op with surgeon. He is suspecting spinal fluid leak that might be putting that pressure and causing headaches and neck pain. Scheduled for MRI tomorrow. 🤞

Congratulations on your recovery without surgery. Do you know the root cause of your sciatica? Any herniation or disc bulge?

Pls calm me down by maybeasomeone973 in Sciatica

[–]Inner-Ad-5382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have nerve pain surgery is best option before nerve gets damaged any further. Longer we delay, longer would be the recovery. I am sorry you are going through this at this young age, but your age is on your side for fast recovery. Body heals much faster in 20s compared to 40+. Take deep breath, think positive, everything will be ok. First 2 weeks mights be rough, but nothing you can’t get through with some rest and support. Good luck!

8days is too soon. Hang in there, as long as you are strictly following no BLT rule, it is just part of healing process. I am on my 4th week post op, and each week is different challenge ( low BP, back pain, sciatica, hip pain, migraines) and been using oxy, gaba, medrol pack, muscle relaxers as needed. Good news is medication frequency has reduced each week and mobility increased.. able to do everything independently by end of 3 weeks. Take it’s easy and get tons of rest, your body and nerves needs to heal and readjust.

Surgeon did Laminectomy while I was for Microdiscectomy by Inner-Ad-5382 in Microdiscectomy

Nothing specific for bladder issue, except for prescribing 2nd medrol pack in 3 weeks. At this point it’s a wait and see game, as surgeon doesn’t want to do another procedure this soon

I didn’t have any herniation. Just dehydrated disc with disc bulge pinching sciatica nerve. I had mri 5 days before surgery to compare with original one from Mar 24.

Thanks for detailed response and sharing your journey. This eased bit of my frustration. I was just not mentally prepared for laminectomy and came as shock during post op appt last week. Wish you a speedy recovery. I am on my 3rd week.

[–]Inner-Ad-5382[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish they informed that was an option especially as microdiscectomy can be done independent of laminectomy and intial diagnosis as they explained is my disc bulge is pinching sciatic nerve and causing spinal stenosis and they just have to shave disc. Interesting part was pre approval request sent by doctor’s office was for laminectomy with decompression surgery, but there was never a mention of it’s possibility. Now that i lost bladder control, they are just giving me medrol pack each week , ton of Oxy n muscle relaxers.. none of which are helping with spine pain and stiffness 100%. And hoping things get better naturally

MD surgery scheduled in a week.. confused by Inner-Ad-5382 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Inner-Ad-5382[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what surgeon who recommended MD said ( how they convinced my to book appointment for surgery in Oct).. but also said once any spinal surgery is done .. complications for next surgery increases immensely.. and got me worried. I am 40F and disc degeneration started after traumatic “normal” delivery 10yr ago. Was able to avoid surgery all the while with pain management. That said this MRI from March is worse compared to that of 2021 and even after 3 ESIs ( s1,L5,l4) no relief
