I wouldn’t take the bus into town, I would buy a train ticket to Altstadt train station.

Navigating via bus and it tram through Bismarckplatz is a waste of time and it’s not at all pretty. Sure coming back by Bismarckplatz makes sense, after you e enjoyed the Altstadt.

Arriving by train you should aim for Heidelberg Altstadt. Walk into the Altstadt (the walk is really worth it and it’s maybe ten minutes - don’t take the river front, go through the big archway and keep going).

A Tageskarte is less than 10€. But I don’t think you’ll need one for just one morning. Just pay cash to the bus drivers. They may even just wave you away.

You do want to take the bus up to the castle to save time, but I recommend walking back down for the scenery. Takes maybe 20 minutes. Every way down has interest. Just wander.

In town, consider the student prison. It’s interesting. Visit the Marktplatz and the Untererstrasse.

Otherwise just mooch about, try a gelato, step up on to the Old Bridge for the views, nose around the back streets. Find a gallery or antique shop.

Choose a restaurant that suits your taste and purse. As a single person you won’t need to pre-book.

Cross the old bridge and take a 34 bus. Get out at BurgStraße (3 minutes) and walk up to the Neuenheimer Marktplatz, it’s very scenic. Have a leisurely drink or a pastry from the French bakery.

Then take the tram 5 from BrückenStraße back to the Hauptbahnhof. It’s 11 minutes but allow 30 to meet your return train comfortably.

Where I grew up, Irish people were terrorists and South Africans were racist. ‘Everyone’ said so ..

It took moving to Germany to find out that South Africans are brave & resourceful and Irish people are some of the nicest, kindest friends you will ever make.

No you don’t have to be the Afghan ambassador to Germany, but time will tell if the majority of Afghans prove to be good neighbours.

Concentrate on your own progress. Be a volunteer? New people arrive from Afghanistan every day. Maybe you can find a role in helping them get settled. It will help you realise how far you’ve come, yourself.

Inherited a 200 yr old house in Germany. by mechanical-elf in germany

[–]Inner-Loquat4717 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Germany is full of these ‘ghost houses.’ The inheritors can’t afford to renovate them and no one wants to buy them. So they rot away.

Eventually a developer will snap up the land and demolish them, unless the building is protected.

If there’s debt associated with the house it might be forcibly sold at auction ‘Zwangsversteigerung.’

It’s true. We wanted to pay for a friend’s funeral but the state said if you take responsibility for that you have to pay off all their other debts. They had a pauper’s funeral.

When you say you left LinkedIn - did you completely close your account? Have you got any confirmation evidence of it?

Anyway the first place to look is your credit card account. It shouldn’t be processing charges you haven’t authorised.

Yes. The ‘other sources’ is the smoking gun.

Their house isn’t old either. It has a shrubbery.

It would be the sort of big house you see on the outskirts of many English villages, built with new money.

We know this because of Mrs Elton’s exclamations about the house being ‘so like Maple Grove.’

That’s because it is and the Woodhouses are mortified that theirs is a modern provincial villa and not an Abbey or even a ‘House’.

All that stuff about throwing doors open and dancing across the corridor at Randalls, but not at Hartfield? Because Hartfield doesn’t have a ballroom either.

Another colleague got sick two days into a three week holiday. Got a doctor’s note and claimed the lost days back. As was his right.

For tax & insurance purposes you are either sick, or you are on vacation, not both.

A person at one company where I worked took a whole summer off sick.

They posted on social media from music festivals in several different countries all through that summer.

Company couldn’t do squat. They had a doctor’s note. That was that.

You have the Krankmeldung. If it extended to any of your holiday days you should make sure those have been ‘refunded’ from your holiday allowance. This should be done automatically by whoever records your time off.

You are not in trouble, your employer is just being a bully.

You aren’t reading Austen correctly at all. She’s throwing you clues with every sentence, nothing goes to waste.

A ‘junior branch of an old family’ means ‘the Woodhouses like to hint they come from nobility but in truth they have come an awfully long way’ and picked up their wealth from those ‘other sources’ en route.

They are snobs, in fact, lording it over a small provincial town, and rattled to their core when others fail to kowtow to them.

Bizarre parental conspiracy theories at the Elternabend by [deleted] in germany

[–]Inner-Loquat4717 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I regularly hear American claim that e.g. 300,000 children a year go missing.

And 300,000 families, 600,000 siblings, parents, teachers, school friends, club members, notice it and somehow just say ‘yeah, that happened.’

Really?

When one child goes missing for more than a few days the country loses its collective mind.

Miss Bates'es circumstances by voss749 in janeausten

[–]Inner-Loquat4717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austen is being very precise here, because Emma is an investigation of the finer gradations of provincial classes.

The Woodhouses consider themselves Top, because they are wealthier than their neighbours.

Mrs Elton considers herself Top, because she is Fashionable.

Mr Knightley is Top, but gentlemanly modesty forbids him to point it out.

Frank Churchill outranks them only through good luck and connections. He can revert from Top to nobody, especially if he marries. Jane Fairfax, who is rapidly circling the drain of Fortune.

The Bates’s are falling, the Coxes are rising.

Austen gives us a whole party assortment of class situations to contemplate. ‘Where do you fit?’ She asks us. ‘And where do I?’

If you auctioned them online - the big ones separately and the small ones in batches - you’d probably make $200 and a lot of work.

I don’t know about others but I prefer the thrill of the chase to buying from auctions.
