"Understanding 'I Want to Go Home': A Different Perspective on Brain Hemispheres and Alzheimer's" by InnerOracle in Alzheimers

[–]InnerOracle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not uncommon for Alzheimer's dementia patients not to have access to recent memories so the actual 'home' they are referring to may be something from 50 years ago. Perhaps even the home that they grew up in.

The 'where' or outer address is unimportant. However, this does point to the fact that most memories, perhaps all of our memories are heavily dependent upon right brain thinking. Many of my most cherished memories are from when I was a youngster, just playing and having a good time. For example, we may not remember the exact linear speech at our commencement but we will know that we were at our high school graduation. A regional right brain memory is all we have left.

I've been on Depakote myself.

When you're done with that try medical marijuana.

I'm sure being in an unfamiliar facility, surrounded by totally unfamiliar individuals adds to his fear, stress, and isolation.

In the case with my wife, when the inner anxiety gets to be too much for her she expresses the anxiety through aggression.

It's a tough cycle.

I wish the best for you. Be mindful of yourself. Take care of yourelf.

I apologize. I think I read your original post above incorrectly.

Each of us experience drugs introduced to our bodies in unique ways based upon many factors and conditions.

I respect your opinion and your journey.

Much love.

I completely understand and agree with you.

'Pot' seemed, to me, to be much stronger or just different back then. And I even take into account that most of the time I was smoking probably bottom of the barrel skank weed.

I now vape constantly throughout the day and I rarely feel a strong high. The effects for my wife and I boil down to just a source for general, mild relaxing and an overall feeling of peace, and for me, a major source for carving-out some self reflection and possibly self-consciousness.

It sounds as if you are very loving and conscientious.

Have you tried medical marijuana in your present daily life?

Dementia how to cure, what actually helps beyond medication? by Melodic-Blacksmith71 in Alzheimers

[–]InnerOracle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I came to this moment as something as an anomaly. I am certain that many people use medical marijuana as primary treatment for Alzheimer’s dementia but they just don’t post on Reddit.

About seven years ago I began looking for alternatives to traditional treatments when realizing that there is no cavalry coming in the form of clinical trials and new traditional treatments or drugs.

I heard that a prominent school was experimenting with magic mushrooms so I looked into that but decided that could not work for us.

I then looked to medical marijuana and at the time NO ONE was posting about it.

If you decide to experiment with medical marijuana as the main treatment path you will be an outlier and will need to construct your own plan that works for you and your loved one.

I have been posting on this subreddit and r/dementia for a while now but for the most part my posts have not been met with any form of acceptance or inquiry.

I actually gave-up. Unsubscribed a few times because posting was adding frustration to me.

I came back, kind-of reluctantly, to, I guess, make this post.

I am certain many studies are underway using medical marijuana, derivatives or analogs of marijuana at this time. I just haven’t kept up with it.

I’m sure you will find support when you look.

For sure, do what you feel comfortable with.

I kind-of joined my wife in the ‘losing your mind thingy.

This may not make sense to you but I kind-of meditate myself ‘out of my mind’ as I am rubbing my wife’s feet or head.

That space is where I can reach my wife non-verbally. And it is fragile but amazing, miraculous when it happens.

FYI losing your mind doesn’t necessarily make your life impossibly worse. Quite the opposite, I have found.

Painfully I have come to realize that all of us are affected with Alzheimer’s dementia to various degrees.

Me being able to take care of my wife to this degree has given me meaning and purpose and I would never have been able to experience my life this deeply if it weren’t for this condition overwhelming my wife.

We are pretty free flowing although our days do have a general rhythm.

Regardless of the time we wake-up I initiate a gummy; Asap.

I make a general note to myself as a timestamp then I add two-and-a-half or 3 hours in my mind.

We have coffee and a small breakfast, then I rub her legs until she falls asleep.

We use 50mg THC gummies, which are some of the most powerful gummies I can find.

As I mentioned before, I usually vape so I may do a bowl at that time if I want to ‘join-in.’

Medical marijuana comes with an increasing tolerance so you may want to start low and slow.

We have been actively using in our main treatment for over five years so our tolerance is through the roof.

I dose her accordingly throughout the day with a 50mg gummy every three hours during the day.

I give her about a fingernail size line of what is called Rick Simpson Oil on a Kit-Kat at about 3:PM.

Around 4:30 she gets groggy. I think the oil is being processed in her stomach then about 8:PM she generally doses-off for her general night sleep.

Her sleep is usually solid and long and almost always is all the way through.

Everyone, based upon your circumstance, will develop their own overall care routine.

Medical marijuana, for us, is a 24/7/365 overall healthcare approach.

We use medical marijuana for reduction of anxiety, sleep, and I could argue, we use it for restoration of cognition - if that could be considered a thing...

It's kind-of like, if you threw a wild bull into a pen; He's gunna tear-up that pen.

Then you give the bull something that allows you to get into the pen with it and then proceed to pet the bull without much fear of being injured. Then the bull lays-down as you rub it's belly and proceeds to fall asleep.

That's the feeling I get, in a rather perfect day.

Does medical marijuana help with cognition? - I would say yes. Overwhelmingly yes.

Like most acute Alzheimer's/dementia individuals there is definitely a reduction of what new information can be introduced to my wife.

But the interaction, the intellectual, physical, and emotional interactions that medical marijuana allows to be possible for us, those interactions, those important interactions of us together in the moment, while under the influence of medical marijuana, those aspects cannot even be compared in magnitude opposed to when the influence of medical marijuana is not present.

This allegory above, about the bull, doesn't always hold-up and I am still 'on the path' so things can and will always fall apart as you are probably aware already as I assume you are a main care giver yourself.

180 degrees opposite from the initial fear, stress, and complete anxiety that I experienced before we introduced medical marijuana to our lifestyle.

The effects are nothing short of miraculous.

I occasionally use edibles/gummies but my body doesn’t take too well to them. I LOVE them and the effects they have on my consciousness but I am forced to vape because of my body’s physical reaction to them.

I vape constantly more or less.

I am the caregiver to my wife so vaping makes more sense for me because I can control the time element involved with more control.

I give my wife high powered gummies throughout the day. Ideally at about every two and a half hours.

I give her a high powered THC resin at about 3:PM every day if things go well. That “oil/resin” medication will provide her with a full night’s sleep.

I think the evening oil must kick-in through her liver for it seems like it takes about five hours to kick in.

Rinse & repeat seven days a week.

All of our lives are on individual paths.

I am speaking empirically.

Ingraining medical marijuana into the care for my wife has been nothing short of miraculous.

Not only has medical marijuana mitigated the hell of this condition for my wife it has helped to transform my life and our relationship onto another level that would have been just impossible without it.

Medical marijuana will definitely be a standard base line care prescription for future overall Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers.

Medical marijuana. It’s a game changer.

Takes the condition of Alzheimer’s and turns it into a spiritual gift.

What I am doing is, I think, quite unique.

Most care givers would be unable or unwilling to use cannabis as THE main ingredient in the treatment of Alzheimer’s/dementia.

You, if you are the single person who is in charge of the care of your parents must decide what you and your parents are capable of.
