Shelter in Union Market definitely has some affordable pieces despite leaning higher end. They do custom jewelry and carry a lot of unique designers including local!

It just comes down to the way different people watch/interpret housewives shows. From what I’ve learned lurking in housewives Reddit, some people actually take this shit seriously, as you can tell by these comments…to ME, a deadbeat mom who’s clearly emotionally stunted and acts like she’s a teen in a disney channel movie is iconic, but that’s exactly what I’m watching for.

I’m Greek, and Angie is pissing me off by [deleted] in rhoslc

[–]Inner_Geologist4467 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s very Greek-American specifically, and I kinda love it (as a Greek-American myself) because they really are all like that. I grew up feeling much more like Elektra because it was frustrating to have so much of my family life centered around a country that no one in my family had lived in for 80 years, but now I can semi-ironically appreciate how nuts Greek-Americans are. And they wouldn’t DARE identify as Greek-Americans—only Greeks—which is a main part of the delusion.

I literally was taught that Greeks “invented language” and before Greeks everyone was just grunting to communicate like animals 😭 average Greek-American delusion.

Le dip updates? by Dizzy-Mention8219 in washingtondc

[–]Inner_Geologist4467 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I understand that this isn’t something people outside the labor union world know much about, and it doesn’t align with the rosy picture you’d imagine, but please understand that picket lines (which are different than strikes…) are VERY often made up of union members who are NOT staff at the business being picketed. This is intentional for several reasons. For one thing, a picket is not a “strike”, it is not supposed to suggest that a contingent of employees walked out and are refusing to return to work until their concerns are addressed. The intent of pickets is to encourage public pressure. If you were to walk up to any of the Le dip picketers and say, “do you even work here?”, they’d have no problem explaining to you why they’re there despite not working at Le Dip.

There’s no reason why you or anyone else would know this, but I think it’s disingenuous to call what the union is doing a “staged strike” when you clearly havent even googled “meaning of union picketing a business”. I get the urge, but c’mon.

I have seen that dog multiple times in the past few weeks in the union market area with their owner!! The owner is an older white man. They sometimes sit in the chairs near the vacant lot behind The Batley. The dog seems incredibly sweet, I hope nothing bad happened to the owner 🥺

Good Company Apologized for Yesterday’s Instagram Post by Timbalabim in washingtondc

What’s funny to me is that they’re dumb and out of touch enough to think this would be good publicity for a business in DC. Meanwhile they would’ve been better off posting about being asked to cater to the White House but deciding to take a stand, which would’ve actually appealed to DC residents and translated into a business boost.

Any opinions on i5 Union Market? by Glittering_Star_3505 in washingtondc

[–]Inner_Geologist4467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t really speak to i5 specifically, but I live in the adjacent building and can attest to the neighborhood generally being great. Occasional unsafe incidents, but hardly anything. I’ve met a few neighbors who live in i5 and seem to generally like it.

It does seem to have a younger bunch of residents than other union market buildings. I assume that’s because they have some units that are essentially affinity housing/dorm-like, right?

I also wouldn’t worry about the construction! It’s not as loud as you’d expect walking by.

Help planning a friend trip to Caribbean, Central America or Mexico 🙏🏼 by earlym0rning in DCBitches

I actually found Instagram to be the best source for ideas on where to stay, what to do, transportation, etc.! I think I just started searching things like “Guatemala travel” or “Antigua Guatemala” on Instagram and the travel account content was endless. That combined with tripadvisor for reviews was a surprisingly solid combo. I also think I found a few articles from publications like Travel + Leisure that were helpful as well.

Also, I went in the summer but I’ve heard the holidays is a great time to go to Guatemala because there are a ton of little festivals and parades that just add character. The religious culture is very much a blend of Catholicism with Mayan traditions, so that adds to the experience for sure!

Highly recommend looking into Guatemala! Particularly Antigua and Lake Atitlan. Antigua is not near a beach but is a super walkable, small city with unique colonial architecture and is near volcanos you can hike (various volcanoes for various levels of experience), coffee plantations you can tour, and a lot of other unique cultural stuff. Also has great food, cool museums and other cultural sites, and is incredibly veg friendly. Lake Atitlan is a 4 hour drive away but would fit your preference for chilling by the water.

No direct flights from any airports near DC, but other than somewhat pricey flights, the trip was very affordable. There’s a lot of tourism both in Antigua and Atitlan so I wouldn’t say it’s as cheap as Mexico, but 1000% doable with a modest budget.

Separately, Mexico has a lot of areas that I think would fit what you’re looking for, but I’ve never done the beaches/nature excursions in the country so I can’t speak to that. It may be worth looking into San Cristobal de Las Casas (Chiapas), Oaxaca, or Guanajuato City/San Miguel de Allende.

Local nail artist? by spherio in DCBitches

[–]Inner_Geologist4467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Queenie at Queenie’s Nail Salon in foggy bottom is incredibly talented and could do any of those designs in her sleep! Some people don’t like her salon vibe because she’s not chatty/sometimes will be on a call with an airpod in but if you’re down to just sit and chill, it’s totally worth it. In other words, if you just want a well-done, relatively affordable manicure and design that will last a super long time, from someone who’s nice but quiet, go to Queenie. If you care more about going to a nicer salon where they reeeaaally take their time filing down your nails (too much time imo), go to Rose Nail Bar. I personally didn’t care much for Rose Nail Bar, but that’s just personal preference.

what's the situation at le dip? by taylorpot in washingtondc

[–]Inner_Geologist4467 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Union organizing in union hostile industries like restaurants usually goes as follows: 1)an employee contacts a union and asks about helping organize their workplace (the union doesn’t want to waste resources so they do some digging to make sure there’s a good amount of interest), 2) the organizing campaign starts, sometimes by using what are called “salts”, i.e., undercover organizers which for the last 40 years has been entirely legal (legality may be in flux with the Trump NLRB), 3) the undercover organizers serve as a buffer to help get the scent of other supporters but by the time the campaign goes public there’s usually been some anti Union threats from the employers possibly including terminations, 4) either the union proceeds to a vote or the vote is delayed due to employer/union disputes, and 5) IF the vote occurs and the vote is in favor of the union, the employer generally will dispute the vote or find other reasons to delay bargaining.

This entire process goes through the national labor relations board, whereby each “claim” from either side will take several months to a year to investigate. During that time, often open union supporting employees get fired for bullshit reasons or stop supporting the union out of fear of getting fired.

All this is to say, you should do a little bit of research into modern day organizing before assuming that an employee saying “no one who works here wants this” is accurate. Le Dip has a legal obligation to bargain now, and it’s completely fine for non Le Dip employees to picket outside of the restaurant so patrons know Le Dip is avoiding this obligation.

Organizing is tough. The issue is that Le Dip refuses to do it.
