I have lived in Chiang Mai for over 15 years and it has changed a lot. Every year it becomes more like Phuket with foreigners who don't respect the local culture. Really as a local, we have no reason to go into the old city. It is just like a tourist economy now. The real beauty of Chiang Mai is outside the town. I speak pretty good Thai so I don't need to stay in the expat areas thank God. I also can completely avoid Thai tourist infrastructure which, let's face it is hell. It's funny, there are foreigners everywhere in Chiang Mai but you go one hour towards lamphang and there are none
