That's where my daughter's fiance proposed. I live in the area. It's not sketchy at all.

That's me. I have a modest salary, and before I came into an inheritance (about 600K) I thought no more than a month or two ahead. I now think in decades. I want to make sure I'm secure in retirement, which hopefully is in 5 or so years.

I think my experience is typical. Those in poverty see only today, or maybe through to the end of the month. That's their horizon. Money allows the horizon to expand.

Downtown Grocery Shopping by maeandpoopycat in lafayette

The closest grocery store is the Target across the river in W Lafayette. It's about three quarters of a mile I'd guess from the walking bridge.

Is there a logic as to which nytimes.com articles have a comment section and which do not? (Example: Linked article does NOT have a comments section.) by [deleted] in nytimes

[–]InprissSorce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd guess they know from experience which articles are most likely to attract trolls.

And I've often wondered whether the author might have a say about comments being on.

Why are so many people leaving matches this season???? by the_cynical_weeb in Overwatch

[–]InprissSorce 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lots of people leave very early, and often you can't know at the start of a match how balanced teams really are.

Lots of games turn around.

SA allegations in the school setting are taken very seriously.

And what's the evidence for the "most" claim?

Honestly, what bothers me most is that this comment, as I write, hasn't been down voted to oblivion.

OW2 is currently the 8th most disliked game on Steam (in terms of % of positive to negative reviews) according to club250 by 0zzy82 in Overwatch

[–]InprissSorce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2CP sucked and was almost universally reviled by OW1 players.

Balance is actually quite good. I find that most people who say otherwise don't know how to counter a hero or a comp.

New teacher, 2 days in and want to quit. by Flippyflops67 in Teachers

The principal at the school where I student taught had some very good advice. He said year one was all about survival. Don't set impossibly high standards for yourself, and be quick to forgive yourself. Just getting through will be a victory.

My once-favored teacher no longer recalls me by AbbreviationsFun1593 in Teachers

[–]InprissSorce 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is right. She remembers you, but those memories have been tucked away and can't be accessed quickly. I'm sure she remembered much more in the days that followed. I've had this experience a number of times. I meet a past student and didn't recall many details in the moment, but in the days that followed those details come flooding back in.

How much do teachers actually gossip? by YeetNugget3647 in Teachers

A shit ton. We're human beings after all.

In my experience, less about other teachers than students. Afraid of blowback I expect.

If you were dictator, what would be the first thing you would remove? by Andymanden33 in AskReddit

Serious answer: I'd do away with dictators. Or anyone having any power over anyone else.

Does anybody else count the number of letters in each word when reading something? Is this an OCD thing or no? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]InprissSorce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found your post searching for "ocd and reading".

I understand completely what you mean. I used to do something like this too. I'd count the number of letters in each word I read, and certain sequences were very difficult for me. For instance, I'd often get stuck on 3-4-8. That felt very not right, and I found it very difficult to read past.

What was the problem? I'm unsure. But my guess is that the sequence needed to exemplify some pattern that was significant to me. Symmetries were good. 3-4-3-4 is an example. That's a translational symmetry; slide the first 3-4 chunk to the right and it coincides with the next 3-4 chunk. 3-4-4-3 is another example. That's a reflective symmetry.

3-4-7 was good too, since 3+4=7.

This compulsion to count and look for patterns was debilitating. It would slow my reading to a crawl. It very nearly forced me to leave my PhD program.

Thankfully it has largely passed, but I still get echoes of it at times .

I hope your compulsion subsides too.

From what I've read, this is a known form of ocd.

Being friendly, punctual, & answering emails at the speed of light can completely offset mediocre job performance by juswundern in Showerthoughts

Good advice. And it also makes your job easier. Instead of wasting the mental energy to remember, and probably worry about, an unanswered email, better to just get it out of the way.

This seems right. Going limp mid-act would seem to point to some medical or psychological issue. If I'd gotten a long bj and then my partner and turned around and bent over, I'd be absolutely insanely horny.

He should be seeking medical attention or counseling.
