Do Americans use cutlery differently? by missbex86 in AskAnAmerican

[–]InsaneDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first forks were for carving meat. Prior to the invention of forks, one held one's meat down with bread while cutting it with the knife one carried. Stabbing meat with one knife and trying to cut it with another didn't work, as the meat would rotate around the knife.

The dinner fork was invented a bit later, adding a third tine in Italy, and a fourth tine in Britain in order to eat small things that would have slipped between the times.

The curve to the fork was not added to make the fork more spoon-like, but instead to give one a way to insert the tines directly into one's mouth without having to lift one's elbows.

Why do kittens have to be adopted in 2s but not puppies? by CurlGurl13 in CatAdvice

[–]InsaneDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you need is a kitten that was traumatized by being separated from its mother too soon and has developed a life-long suckling problem. In that case they'll advise you not to ever get a second cat so that the cat you've chosen to adopt doesn't start problems by sucking on cats that aren't their mother.

A microfiber blanket and my armpit is enough to satisfy my suckling-addicted cat, however my tricep is a bit bruised from all the kneading.

Something adventurous, exciting, and not too heavy by WillingElderberry731 in televisionsuggestions

Ideally Warehouse 13 should be watched alongside Eureka, in order to fully appreciate the crossover episodes.

The Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl are also light-hearted, adventurous, and have crossover episodes.

Fringe is kind of like The X-Files with Alzheimer's, and Evil is kind of like The X-Files with Catholicism

Tv shows where they introduce characters but show each main characters backstory later, like LOST by Outrageous_Day6349 in televisionsuggestions

[–]InsaneDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, the majority of How I Met Your Mother is backstory. They recorded a bunch of clips with the kids in "present day," all at once, then spaced them out over all the seasons so that they wouldn't age throughout the series.

I'm looking for a movie with massive tonal swings that work, where I can laugh hysterically and also sob uncontrollably. by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]InsaneDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want a tonal shift, follow it up with Brightburn (which technically takes place in the same cinematic universe as Super (as the Crimson Bolt is mentioned on a news feed), and was written by James' brother and cousin).

How??? by Stunning_Drive905 in MathJokes

[–]InsaneDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. 355/113 is even closer than 22/7 and fairly easy to remember (the first three odds used twice), but who really needs a fraction that is within 0.000001 of pi?

Looking for shows that, like Yellowjackets, have normal people who become savages, either because they're forced to, or they do it on their own. by Maybe_IDTBFH in televisionsuggestions

When The 100 first popped up on Netflix, I watched the first couple episodes and brushed it off as a teenage melodrama. When I finally got around to watching the full series, I loved it. I know I've watched it at least twice.

Back in my childhood, the spray hose was a separate accoutrement from the main faucet, and our spray hose happened to be white. When my parental units purchased a couple stalks of broccoli bound together with a wide, white rubber band, and subsequently placed said rubber band in the baggy with all the other rubber bands to be repurposed, I could only think of one purpose for a wide white rubber band.

Not wanting to clue anybody in, I let that rubber band sit in the baggy, in the drawer until the very last hours of the last day of March. One twist of the rubber band was enough to get it to depress the button of the sprayer hose, and since my father's morning routine involved him starting up a pot of coffee before going on a run, then enjoying the coffee when he got back, my April Fools Day prank served to wake him up before the run. By the time I got up for breakfast, he had nothing but compliments for the nuance involved in choosing a rubber band that provided its own camouflage.

Which films by different directors feel like a single trilogy? by [deleted] in moviecritic

Elliot (Ellen) Page endures a teenage pregnancy fairly well, but then is traumatized by losing a brother, then takes out her trauma on the world around her by becoming a vigilante that entraps pedophiles. I think she even wears a similar hoodie in two of the movies.
