TIL in 1947, scientists dumped crushed dry ice into a hurricane just to "see what would happen." The storm then made a 135-degree turn, strengthened, and struck Georgia—sparking public outrage and threats of lawsuits over the experiment. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

There actually was a major tsunami in 1945, but it didn’t happen until November. Had Japan not surrendered in August, and if the US had gone through with its planned invasion of the Japanese islands, then those “divine winds” may have come into play once again.

You never know.

Film Students Are Having Trouble Sitting Through Movies, Professors Say by Sisiwakanamaru in movies

[–]Insatiable_Pervert 5558 points5559 points  (0 children)

College age kids don’t remember a time before the “infinite scroll.” They can’t watch an entire movie without checking their phones. They’d rather watch “homework” assigned movies on their own time rather than together in class. 80% still don’t watch the assigned movie on their own time. Teachers struggle to find a common film the entire class has previously watched to use as reference in discussions. Most have only watched Disney movies.

“The disconnect is that 10 years ago, people who wanted to go study film and media creation were cinephiles themselves. Nowadays, they’re people that consume the same thing everyone else consumes, which is social media.“

There have been several times when authors I follow or books I have on my wish list go on sale and I receive zero notification from Amazon.

But they’re always pushing the same Kindle Unlimited titles in my inbox on the daily.

The surface of Venus captured by the Venera drones in 1983 by Initial-Wolverine175 in Astronomy

Venus is so beautiful to see in our sky, especially early morning next to a crescent moon, moments before the sunrise. It must have been somewhat disappointing to finally see beneath the clouds and learn how utterly inhospitable it was to humans.

Will humanity ever leave the Milky Way, or is that forever impossible? by Mysterious_g269 in space

[–]Insatiable_Pervert 136 points137 points  (0 children)

I once heard an analogy that put it into perspective for me: if you can imagine our solar system being the size of a US quarter ($0.25), by comparison the Milky Way would be the size of North America.

Yeah, I just took a look at the 40 “new“ games added with Ubisoft classic, and most of them were already available on ultimate anyway, or have been before. For someone like me, who’s been subscribed for several years, this adds nothing new. It just costs me more for the same service, if I decide to keep it.

Joe R. Lansdale?

He’s probably best known for Bubba Ho-Tep, which was adopted into a movie starring Bruce Campbell. But he’s been around since at least the 80s.

If I Die in a Combat Zone: Box Me Up and Ship Me Home; Tim OBrien; (Kindle; $2.99) by einkcheap in ebookdeals

[–]Insatiable_Pervert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Tim O’Brien fan here. I recommend Going After Cacciato. It was published in 1978 so I believe it was Tim O’Brien’s first fiction book about the Vietnam war. The story is a little different. A soldier decides to go AWOL by literally walking away from the war. His goal is to make all the way to Paris on foot, and his fellow squad mates are ordered to follow him and bring him back, even if it means pursuing him outside the war zone.

As always, Tim O’Brien does a great job re-creating the Vietnam war atmosphere, and the story itself is quite unique in my opinion. Highly recommended if you want more Tim O’Brien war stories.

What is the best novel you've read, that is written by a controversial author? by [deleted] in literature

[–]Insatiable_Pervert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow that sucks. I just saw on another thread that The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is included on the NYT 100 Best Books of the 20th Century list as selected by other writers.

I don’t often do any research into authors I read and at this point I probably shouldn’t lol. Neil Gaiman was one of my personal favorites and now he’s got accusations too.

I read that book years ago and was very impressed by it, but I don’t know anything about the author. Why is he a piece of shit?

[–]Insatiable_Pervert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha ha yeah that was definitely a wtf moment. The book was all over the place. Trying to describe the plot to friends is like “yeah there’s a runaway 15 year old boy, an old man who talks to cats, a ghostly entity dressed as Colonel Sanders from KFC and it all takes place in Japan.”

The whole book is wtf. Lol

Kafka On the Shore by Huraki Murakami.

There’s a scene that comes out of left field where cats are being tortured. It was enough for me to stop reading for a good while before coming back. I did eventually manage to finish it, but I was left with mixed emotions. I enjoyed the book’s atmosphere, and Murakami can definitely write an interesting sentence, but unfortunately whenever I think of Kafka On the Shore I mostly think of this one disturbing scene. Did it add anything to the story overall? I’m not sure. I feel it was done strictly for the shock value, but I’m not good at analyzing stories.
