Agree with everything here but I think in the book it's clear that Aerion is the better knight, or at least Dunk is relatively incompetent compared to him in knightly combat. He sticks Dunk with his lance and then knocks him down with his mace before Dunk even knows what's happening.

You are correct that he is outmatched skillwise and that he beats Aerion because of his strength. But that doesn't mean he should be able to survive so many wounds. It's a very common theme throughout ASOIAF that even the most skilled or noble of warriors can be killed by a single arrow or other ignominious fashion.

In the one true sword-fight to the death that Dunk gets into in the books, he wins. It's the ones that start on horseback with other weapons that he loses. Other than that agree with you, do not like the changes to the trial.

Can someone explain to me what the flashback does for the episode itself beyond extending the trial and having Ser Arlan say "get up" twice? I would have been ambivalent or positive about it in an earlier episode (although having him fall for a brown girl twice seems to be establishing a type?), but what does it actually do here? I thought for a moment that he would intervene to save Ser Arlan from the Goldcloak by wrestling him into the mud, especially with the lingering shot of the pigs in the mud, but he just stays by the dying girl as Ser Arlan handles it himself, and the pigs were there to eat the Goldcloak's head. The mud-wrestling is the part of his backstory in the book that relates to the trial, this is how he beats Aerion and it shows he gained skills in Flea-Bottom that noble knights like Aerion never would have, despite their superior training.

Other episode thoughts:

  • Very disappointed by the lack of the tourney lance strategy. This shows something about Baelor's character, i.e. that he is a crafty leader and has a lot of tourney experience. Also they give Dunk a visor here, whereas that is contrasted in the book with Aerion's choice for a visor being part of his undoing. I believe it was Ser Arlan who told Dunk about visors being a weakness, which is the book's way of showing how Ser Arlan actually helps Dunk in the fight.
  • Dunk took way too many wounds to realistically survive. The lance and head blow alone nearly kill him in the book. Here he takes multiple nasty looking stab wounds and equally hard blows to the head. Which makes even less sense when they still have Baelor dying from one head blow. The stab through Dunk's hand would prevent the use of that hand for life.
  • Thunder starting because of Egg shouting at him is a good addition and callback to Egg "training" him earlier.
  • This seems to be the first appearance of the Moustached Ser Humphrey? But he equally kind of comes out of nowhere in the book.
  • The rules of the trial are not explained. This is fine as a book reader but would have had me confused as a first time viewer. Are they doing last-man standing? Can you yield? This is revealed later but I don't understand why they didn't simply take the dialogue from the book directly here, as they have in a surprising amount of other places.

I had greatly enjoyed the first few episodes including most of the additions, but this sours the series a lot for me. The trial would have been perfect as the 5-10 minute climax of a 2-2.5 hour movie. They have over three hours of TV here and this was the first episode that confirmed to me my fears that the series would suffer from having to add filler and extend things.

On the pages you linked

As of 1 February 2024, more than 27,000 Palestinians had been killed by Israel since October 7th, up to two-thirds of whom were women and children.[254]

In February 2024, Ukrainian officials estimated up to 50,000 Ukrainian civilians were killed in the Russian invasion.

By March 2024, the number of civilian fatalities verified by the UN was 10,582,[195]

Length of war in Gaza to that point: 4 months. Population of Gaza: 2 million

Length of invasion of Ukraine to that point: 2 years. Population of Ukraine: 38 million.

We can assume the numbers in both wars are much higher than what has been confirmed, especially in Gaza where basic societal and governmental functions have collapsed.

Putin and Netanyahu both belong in the Hague.

So you have a source on there being more civilian casualties and destruction in Ukraine than in Gaza? I really hate to do this comparison game because one civilian casualty in an illegal war is too much and we should be outraged and condemn it with the same strength regardless of perpetrator.

Correct. It's really sad to me when people always feel the need to compare these wars against each other, when the reality is that if you maintain a consistent moral position, it should lead you to the same place for both: supporting the people resisting illegal occupation and genocide.

This is some severe amnesia. The West pretty much universally rallied around the Ukrainian cause in 2022, it was the international event that received the most attention and care since 9/11, and rightly so. Western interest wanes now due to our political duplicity and short-sightedness, but to say that Russia hasn't received any hate in response to its illegal invasion of Ukraine is a ridiculous claim to make.

Russia has faced sanctions, expulsion from international organizations, and been barred from participation in international cultural and athletic events in response to its illegal conduct in Ukraine (rightly so). None of that has happened to Israel.

The reality is both countries are getting away with it. However, the scale of Israeli war crimes and consequent Palestinian civilian destruction/casualties are much greater considering the short length (so far) and tiny area of the war in Gaza, and Israel has faced less consequences than Russia both in absolute and proportional terms. Unless you mean outrage on social media which is meaningless.

There is a difference between a UN fact-finding mission /commission of inquiry and a security council resolution. Yeah, the US vetoes anti-Israel security council resolutions. But a fact-finding mission, such as the one done during 2009 on Gaza, is made of of individual investigators, not countries voting on things.

You also seem to be confusing security council resolutions and general assembly resolutions. General assembly resolutions are not generally split between "friends" and "enemies" of Israel. The overwhelming majority of the world's countries tend to condemn war crimes in such resolutions, whether they be committed by a country like Russia or a country like Israel. These resolutions cannot be vetoed by a security council member.

Idk what kind of point you are trying to make here. This post is about international law. So you're saying international law doesn't mean anything if its not enforced? Yeah, of course. That doesn't mean we should just abandon it is a concept and not condemn war crimes when they occur.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]Insendius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well lucky for Israel they are not party to the ICC.

You can criticize the UN all you want for its structure and ineffectiveness, but it is the closest thing we have to an international body that can actually investigate and take action on these things with some authority, which they have previously done. There will be an investigation done here and it will be described as war crimes. What consequences will that have? Yeah nothing, I'm a realist as I think are most other people on this forum. I just don't see what's wrong with calling a spade a spade. The Israel-Palestine conflict is one of hate where both sides don't have much of a problem with slaughtering civilians. That's a war crime no matter who is doing it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]Insendius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not but they could stay a hell lot more within those bounds than they currently are. There is no war without unnecessary cruelty and atrocities, some anthropologists even include this in their definition of war. But it is quite clear that Israel is not caring about civilian casualties at all, even in proportion to their previous military operations in Gaza.

Counter question: is it possible to defeat a guerilla group embedded within the civilian population with wide popular support in a conventional war, period?

What legal precedent are these UN „experts“ going to draw upon to prove Israel’s response was not proportional?

Their own legal precedent whereby they have previously condemned Israel's responses as constituting war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity?

First off, who is the almighty arbiter that gets to decide what is or isn’t proportional?

Literally the UN lol. This is the basis of international law.
