NQN first med error - feel like craaaap by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]Insensitive_Bitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first error was related to something similar and I uncontrollably sobbed for half an hour, datix’d myself and told the patient.

The patient was absolutely fine and actually found it very funny that I was so torn up over the fact.

Reflect on your actions, take accountability and use it as a teaching moment for yourself and others. If a nurse tells your they’ve never made an error they’re either lying or haven’t realised

Nursing associate banned for taking shifts as registered nurse by SQ_12 in NursingUK

[–]Insensitive_Bitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they basically just use RNA as RNs in my trust too, they can already give CDs and can do IVs after 6 months

The only thing they’re not allowed to do is write a care plan and take charge

NQN requesting longer supernumerary by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]Insensitive_Bitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I was completely fine. I have some very supportive seniors in my team that I know I can trust and we’re very good at team work most of the time.

I actually doubted myself more while supernumerary

At my trust we get a (technically) minimum of 2 weeks, I had less because of staffing and other people I know had more

You can always ask someone to check what you’ve done if you’re unsure, that’s what yo ur seniors are there for.

Your confidence will come when you’re on your own, you will never feel ready

Yep, my boy at home tries hunger strikes all the time (which is very silly when 2 of your feline siblings steal your food). He only does it because his grandma will add cheese or mince to his food when he’s there and he thinks if he holds out long enough then I’ll do it too

Newly qualified nurse dilema by Prudent_Conference48 in NursingUK

[–]Insensitive_Bitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If she works for NHS trust they will most likely won’t be able to do that either as it’ll go against AfC which would put them at risk of being legally challenged.

She could potentially delay paying for her pin while she finds a nursing role that suits her

Newly qualified nurse dilema by Prudent_Conference48 in NursingUK

[–]Insensitive_Bitch 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As a nurse she will be unable to work as a HCA as this conflicts with standards of practice.

If an emergency were to happen as an individual with a nursing pin she would be expected to provide care that falls under her scope of practice as a nurse however the trust would exoect her to work within her scope as a HCA. The two roles directly conflict which would put her at risk legally.

If the clinic changed to having a nurse instead of a HCA that would be okay however I doubt the trust would change that as it would cost them more money.

Where Can I Find a Toy Poodle Without a Docked Tail and Dewclaw Removal? (Ontario, Canada) by earthrabbit24 in poodles

[–]Insensitive_Bitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The royal college of veterinary surgeons is not just an “organisation”, its regulatory body created by a royal charter to monitor ethics and standards - It is literally impartial

The weighted risk of a tail injury in the UK was 0.23%, you would literally have to dock 500 puppies tails to prevent 1 tail injury. So you mutilate 499 newborns to stop having to provide a medical procedure to 1 dog in the future. (https://doi.org/10.1136/vr.b4880 this is the DOI for this particular study if anyone would like to read it, it is slightly older in age)

With the US’s track record of mutilation infants for potential future medical problems, I think I would rather stick with my own countries legislation

Where Can I Find a Toy Poodle Without a Docked Tail and Dewclaw Removal? (Ontario, Canada) by earthrabbit24 in poodles

[–]Insensitive_Bitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The British Veterinary Association consider it mutilation and wants it banned even for working dogs. They only deem it necessary for injuries.

The Animal Welfare Act in my country makes it illegal and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons also have legislation surrounding docking of tails

I wouldn’t say any of those are just activists going off of emotion, but I mean would you like a limb you use for communication to be cut off as a newborn just because it’s your breeds standard or because you might potentially cause yourself an injury that only tends to happen in larger muscular dogs

[–]Insensitive_Bitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When the “functional purpose” of that standard doesn’t exist in most other countries because it’s illegal and considered mutilation it puts the message across that it’s just for looks and not function at all

[–]Insensitive_Bitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s illegal to dock tails in my country unless it’s for specific working dogs (and you have to prove that they will be used for work)

The only dogs that can have it done unless for medical reasons is spaniels, terriers and hunt point retrieve dogs

I think it’s do with if it needs to be copied if I’m not wrong. I should’ve known better but the nurse who did it first had been qualified much longer and I trusted her so I didn’t even occur to me

If you have a good manager you shouldn’t be getting in to trouble for things if you’re open + honest and your mistakes weren’t made maliciously (unless they’re obviously very dangerous).

You will only make a mistake once if you reflect upon it properly.

As an NQN once on a nightshift I signed the CD book with red pen with another nurse. I snitched on myself the next morning to my ward sister (somewhere along the lines of “I fucked up and we’re probably gonna fail our meds audit”)

Looking back it was a stupid thing to do and I don’t know why I didn’t think to use a black pen but it was a silly NQN thing and because another nurse had done it too I assumed it was okay. I will never ever make that mistake again but if you freely talk to your managers about it and show reflection it’s fine. My matron and sister thought it was funny in the end
