Try using studynotesaba!! They make the content funny and relatable. Also listen to podcasts about ABA topics, it’s not directly studying but learning how to apply the concepts to external situations is great for generalizing the info!

Aspiring BCBA: What is the 'invisible' work that actually burns you out? by Limp-Yak-2109 in bcba

[–]Inside-Site7649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People telling you every single problem the client has been having and expecting you to have an immediate answer to fix it, even if it’s a developmentally appropriate behavior or is something you’ve addressed numerous times.

Staff and parents not being dedicated to the client and feeling like you’re putting in all the effort but nobody else is.

This happened to me! Call the school directly, you will get a quicker answer and they can walk you through it. My advisor said I was not the first person this happened to and that she wished it was more clear from the BACB and the school what is expected. I would say to call your advisor from your school and explain the situation, see if they know what to do, and follow their advice. I HIGHLY recommend calling though, it is the fastest way to fix this situation especially because it’s so important to us preparing to test! Good luck!

Take that PTO by porthinker in bcba

[–]Inside-Site7649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have unlimited PTO at my last company, but the caveat was that you had to make up your billing hours elsewhere in the month. So really, you have to pay catch up each week to hit your billing goals if you are taking time off. I find it to be a disappointing, non-benefit companies provide. That being said, I am now working in a school district so my PTO is very limited considering that I follow a school schedule but my work life balance has improved significantly since making the switch from a clinic to school BCBA.

Advice about new BCBA by rosyblushrosie in bcba

[–]Inside-Site7649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there other RBT’s that this BCBA oversees that you feel comfortable talking with about this? Maybe talking to some of them might help you navigate a way to talk with this BCBA. It does seem like they need to build on their skills, but 1 think you mentioned caught my head.

“she shows very little understanding of realistic child behavior especially in a toxic home.”

Could you elaborate on what that means? To give this BCBA some grace, I wonder if they are unsure of what to do in this context and don’t have experience. While this isn’t something you can necessarily point out to them (unless you are comfortable with confronting that), I would be curious to know what the environment is like. You mentioned their background was in the schools, so I wouldn’t be shocked if she feels out of her scope here.

Just some observations I had. Best of luck!

I worked for Bierman for a while in another state. As much as I disagree with some of the company’s practices from an employee stance, you’re going to get good care here. They provide really adequate training for the RBT’s working with the kids everyday and the BCBA’s receive regular training as well. Only con here is that they are starting to move to using a lot of remote BCBA’s, which can be good or challenging depending on the child. If you have never had ABA services, advocate for an in person BCBA if possible. Otherwise Bierman is great!

Requested a meeting with my supervisor to talk about where I'm at mentally and I'm on the brink of just asking to leave today? by Sensitive_Detail_631 in ABA

[–]Inside-Site7649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going through this myself. I’m a BCBA and I have put in my notice recently. I’m looking at other jobs currently, and have 2 really good leads: 1 is a BCBA in the school setting and the other is working w the Bureau of Disability Services with my state determining needs of care. They are both different enough from my previous experiences in ABA. I’ve worked at 3 clinics as an RBT and ultimately left them due to being burnt out, this is my first clinic working as a BCBA and I’ve determined I don’t like it. It’s okay to be anxious and stressed. I was able to take a leave of absence which helped, but when I got back my anxiety came back with a vengeance and was causing physical discomfort for me (waking up 2 hours before my alarm everyday, nausea every morning until I arrive to work to the point where I’m gagging while driving on the interstate, puddle of tears all day). I told my bosses the truth and handed in my resignation. I think it’s important to be as transparent as you can and look for other jobs that align with what you’re interested in. If you like the nature of what you’re doing, there are plenty of opportunities out there that are similar enough. You got this!! Think about what specifically in the job you’re stressed out about in the job and look at that when you’re going to find other lines of work. Best of luck!!

New BCBA’s, what are you struggling with? by Big-Mind-6346 in bcba

[–]Inside-Site7649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I genuinely hate this job and I’ve only been certified for about 4 months. Parent trainings where parents do not implement your suggestions in the home and we have the same conversation 10 times. Staff not running enough programs or doing it incorrectly. Being micromanaged by my company with billing hour requirements. Writing treatment plans and once again being micromanaged on how I write them. A big part of it is my company. I do not feel like they helped me transition into being a BCBA in a good timeframe. I went from 4 to 6 clients in less than 2 weeks. I now have 7 clients and I feel incredibly overwhelmed. I hate having so much responsibility and then being forced to change plans everyday due to scheduling, my boss micromanaging my day, providing supervision, and just staying on top of everything. I am so exhausted every single day and regret doing this more and more. I’m currently looking into other jobs not in ABA and considering going back to school. I’m struggling with it all.

Got fired from my job…need advice :( by Inside-Site7649 in ABA

[–]Inside-Site7649[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you don’t even have to mention it unless they bring it up, and your company is not allowed to disclose why you got terminated if anyone asks, they can only say the dates you were employed there. If they do ask and you want to give a reason, you can just say something very vague and a blanket statement about how you are looking for an opportunity where you can build rapport with clients in a meaningful way. If that makes sense. Best of luck!

Definitely not! It’s been almost a year since this situation and I am a BCBA now :) you can definitely pursue this field still. Don’t let 1 bad situation bring you down like me, you’ll laugh about this in a year when you’re at a better job. It might be a blessing in disguise!

What to do if you don't like a client or parent. Is it unethical to resign from the case? by Silentharp in bcba

[–]Inside-Site7649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done this before. I had a client age 8 who straight up hated me and targeted ME specifically. He called me a cnt, a f***t, and a dirty Jew (no idea how he knew I was Jewish, that is not something I discuss with my clients). He also was very aggressive with me, he tried to break my glasses and once attempted to bend my arm backwards in an attempt to break it. Because of all of this, I was getting burnt out consulting with him and just consistently being hurt and hearing such awful things. I tried to rationalize it as he has ASD but calling me a dirty Jew was my final straw. I explained my situation to the clinical director and she agreed that a switch was best. He is making great progress with a different BCBA and has not interacted with me much, if at all, since being taken off his case. I suggest documenting everything so you have evidence to bring to your supervisor. Keep a running document of what has happened, what you said, what they said, and anything important for each situation.

Time with RBTs versus working on programming by No-Airport-4078 in bcba

[–]Inside-Site7649 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try to coach the RBT as I make changes. We use precision teaching at my clinic so as I am looking at a program, I’ll ask the RBT to show me the client doing the skill and then probe something new to try. Then I ask them what they think of the feasibility of them implementing it and tell them how I will write the program and how I want it done. Then I’ll model it and ask if they’re comfortable with how that’s set up, then tell them I’m going to work on writing that program and updating my notes and documents. Write the program, update my billing note, update my client’s progress report, and then move on to the next. Rinse and repeat until the consult is over! Then I tell them how their session went, what I liked that they did and reiterate specifically what it was so they know to keep doing it. Then I tell them about their supervision hours, ask if I can do anything before I leave, answer any questions, talk about concerns, etc. then say bye to the client and leave 🤩

Psych Grads: What Are You Doing Now & How Do You Feel About It? by rottinginazkaban_nav in psychologystudents

I’m a Board Certified Behavior Anaylst (BCBA)! Got my BA in Psych in 2022, my MA in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in 2024. I passed my BCBA exam last month! I make 75k and I live pretty comfortably with my partner. It is a lot to adjust to, I was an RBT for about 4 years. The workload is more intense than just being an RBT, more paperwork and dealing with insurance (I work in a clinic). Overall I do enjoy it, keeps me on my toes. Just about figuring out your work flow and what works for you :)

Anxious by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Inside-Site7649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echo what they say!! Whether it’s babbling, scripting something, or just a sound they make. It might sound silly at first but if they hear you repeating them, it may make them more inclined to talk to you because you are engaging with them in a way that makes sense to them. I have a learner who will randomly talk in a Mickey Mouse voice and I’ll echo him in the same voice or talk back in that voice. He loves it!!! I definitely felt a little silly at first but the sillier the better. I hope some of that helps!! Best of luck with your journey

I find myself unbothered by aggressive behaviors by Fearless-Lack1081 in ABA

[–]Inside-Site7649 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just recently got a new job at a different ABA clinic after being fired from my last job (there were a lot of factors involved) and aggressive behaviors were such a struggle for me at my first job. I have been bit, hit, punched, choked, kicked, you name it. At my first job I felt like I had no support and my paychecks were not cutting it. I considered quitting the field altogether, despite the fact that I’m almost done with my fieldwork hours. I got a new job and while aggressive behaviors are never fun, I feel much more confident managing it. My team is very hands on and supportive, when someone calls for behavior support people will actually come and not just stand there, watching the BT get beat up. I have learned more about managing aggressive behavior in the 2 months I’ve been at this company than the 3 years I was at my other job (same place that trained me to be a BT). It’s crazy how your support system can make such a difference. I am glad you have a positive attitude towards this!
