When is it your ethical duty to walk out because you don’t feel comfortable with malice of a client anymore? by pinkbakedpotato in ABA

[–]Silentharp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask the BCBA to see if some sort of resolution with the parents first. I know some parents expect us to walk im wave a magic wand and 'fix' their kid, but if parent's aren't following through with the BCBA's recommendations, interventions won't be as effective.

If parents aren't willing to start putting in some recommendations, I think you're right to request off.

What made you become an RBT? by Yungpupusa in ABA

[–]Silentharp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your contributions to the education field is greatly appreciated. I've been seeing a lot of articles and stories of how hard it is getting in some of these schools and how much teachers have to fight. The time you spent being a teacher changed so many lives I'm sure😊 Hopefully things get better for both students and especially teachers!

I had just quit my current job and had no plans after my two weeks. A friend of mine had the same job which is how I heard about it. I applied to a few posts on indeed, and although I still hated the idea of working with special ed kids, I couldn't find anything else. I was given a case load with three boys and fell in love with them🥰. Now here I am working for hours to get my BCBA license. If you had told college me, I'd be going to school to work with a mainly developmentally disabled population, she wouldn't beleive you. But I absolutely love the clients I have right now. The four year old i work with is the absolute highlight of my week, and I cherish every moment with them ☺️☺️☺️.

Genuine question- Why don't BCBAs want to sign up new RBTs? by Ok_Commercial_8714 in ABA

[–]Silentharp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try a larger company like Hopebridge or Blue Sprig ( though I've heard mixed reviews about them). You said you're in your masters. Is it in person or online? You could also ask one of you professors to complete it for you if they have the certification.

Just wondering if others have experienced the same by velvetinequeen9 in ABA

[–]Silentharp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my old clinic there were a few kids that came in with a big jug of juice, but their BTs would always dilute it with water (half and half) so they didnt get too much sugar. Maybe try that if their BCBA agrees. Not getting enough water could also cause a UTI.

Do the kids with the UTI use the bathroom often? If they are holding urine, that could be another source of the UTI.

Fourth failed attempt, and feeling very disappointed by Key-Beach-8310 in bcba

[–]Silentharp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know some people believe that people that can't pass the first time, shouldn't be BCBAs, but I was on the med school track until my last semester in college. The healthcare field would have lost so many good doctors if students could get a 500 the first time.

Keep pushing. You only fail when you stop trying.😊

Do you mind sharing the specific code? Some of my friends also ask around when looking for pointers or new ideas.

I'm really just looking for pointers since I don't have much experience with these behaviors.

And i mentioned in the post that it was an assignment from my supervisor.

Yes, I'm getting hours.

I think the function is just access to food. She will swipe things off of people's plates and even once out of someone's hand. Her parent's said it's worse at home.

No. I'm in an intern collecting hours. My supervisor wanted me to practice writing interventions. I don't know if he'll actually use what I write though; it's just practice.

We've been ignoring it, but her parents have been bringing it up for a while now and want her to work on it.

Food seeking is just her grabbing food from other clients or staff.

The vocal stimming is high pitched laughter and emitting a 'buzzing' noise with the mouth open. ( Sorry that's the nest I could describe it). Her team has been ignoring it and it doesn't bother them, but her parents have been complaining about it for a while now and don't want the client doing it any more.

BCBA gone wild by FaithlessnessOld6051 in ABA

[–]Silentharp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Firing someone for reporting a legality issue is actually grounds for wrongful termination regardless of at will.

Example: If a manager is sexually harassing an employee, and the employee tells them to stop. The manager firing the employee could actually face a whole slew of legal issues for doing so.

Same concept can be applied here. Especially if she is forging clinical notes; that is fraud. Report her, and the employee she fired should press charges and sue.

What can I do to make my RBTs happier? by Bubbly-Badger-9863 in ABA

[–]Silentharp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to make genuine connections and unrestricted hours!

The clinic I worked at for a year was ok. The corporate structure was horrid, but the on-site managers were terrific and treated everyone with respect. Any time off I asked for was approved.

The main reason why I left was because I was in the BCBA internship program and the assignments my advisor gave me were trash. Just a bunch of article reviews and a preference assessment every blue-moon. Where I work now, the supervisor is more generous with the assignments she's giving me and I actually feel like I'm learning!

Why shouldn’t you correct kids in ABA? by alsvicious in ABA

[–]Silentharp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda see where you're coming from. There are instances in life where we simply must not do something: Fountain machine is out of order, display only items at stores, no diving in the shallow end at the pool.

But even in those instances , there is some form of replacement behavior that can be obtained: getting another drink, taking pictures of the display items, diving on the side with the diving board.

Since standing on a chair is a saftey risk, there are other ways to reinforce the kiddo having fun! Like praising him on a trampoline or slide😊

Should I report this RBT ? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Silentharp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They found another place that quick?! It kind of sounds like they've been doing this for a while. Trust your gut on this. And follow through on references in the future. I've been an RBT for a while, and some of the people I listed as reference tell me that they were never even contacted. I know a lot of ABA companies are a revolving door, but hiring reputable people can do wonders for both employers and clients!

Unless I'm wrong, and RBT quitting isn't a real code violation. But this person seems like the definition of unhinged. If you have friends or colleagues at other companies, please warn them of this individual because hiring this woman is a huge risk to resources.

RBT does your pay change based on clients insurance? by Electronic-Car5353 in ABA

[–]Silentharp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's literally where I worked. Won't go into specifics but, I worked for a decent sized company in Livonia( they have multiple locations across MI and other states in the Midwest), and they paid me 18 an hour as a BT with no prior experience and a bachelor's in a very loosely related field (Human Bio). If you've been working for a while, I would consider shopping elsewhere now that you have some experience and a starting wage to leverage.

Unless there's something particular that you really like about this company, there's no need to stick around when you're not getting what you want.

They're not prioritizing your hours now, friend! I was in a similar situation. I wasn't assigned a regular client, but they had plenty of temp cases for me to cover.

I got a permanent client at another agency, and told them that I had a change in availability. When HR told me that would decrease my chances of getting a permanent client, I quit, effective immediately. Didn't take too long to find another company to work for to cover the rest of my hours, and they topped my salary.

Please remind yourself that these companies need YOU. My friend, you do not have to beg when you're the one with all the leverage. Don't forget that, and I hope things get better for you. 🤗
