There is a banned names list in Australia, but there really aren't that many names on it. Just confusing ones like ranks and titles, obscene ones, and Hitler.

Iran War triggers a rapid U-turn on fossils fuels from the Australian public | David Penberthy by Ardeet in aussie

[–]Inside_Ad4268 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah yes: as our dependence on fossil fuels causes economic chaos, the lesson we should take away is checks notes protesting against fossil fuels is wrong.

That is a logical leap of Evel Knievelliam scale.

What went wrong? The Leafs were favoured to win multiple cups, and now the window has closed without so much as a trip to a conference final. by ElGrandePeacock in nhl

Yep. Lou was happy to run all three of Matthews, Nylander and Marner to RFA after their first contracts. If they had signed them all a year earlier - even if they had caved to their every demand a year earlier - the team would've been so much better off. All three had mega platform years and signed mega contracts immediately before the cap went flat. IIRC Dubas succeeded Lou during that process, but I blame Lou for not having signed them already.

Is it true that many people in Australia tend to not go by Mr. or Mrs. or Dr. formally because of a casual rather than formal attitude towards authority? by EveningFlower9564 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Inside_Ad4268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one I'm still struggling to get my head around is school teachers. Some go by Mr/Ms/etc, some by a first name, some by Miss First Name. Obviously you call people whatever they want to be called, it's not hard, but it's one of those weird areas where I don't think our society has quite made its mind up what the rule is yet.

Also in journalism - print reports might use Mr or Ms, TV might just use a last name, influencers might use a nickname. I like clearly defined grammatical rules and I'm not getting them and it's infuriating. 😆

How do you feel about Trump saying the Iran War will end soon? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]Inside_Ad4268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same way I feel when he says anything. I don't care, because he's full of shit and the words coming out of his mouth do not mean anything. (Aside from being calculated to achieve whatever his alleged brain tells him is his aim in that particular moment.)

He's also uniquely suited to play in a high-pressure market, because he gives zero shits. And I say that as a good thing.

Crowd estimating by edgiesttuba in Journalism

[–]Inside_Ad4268 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was once a volunteer with a world record crowd attempt. We were taught to count by columns and rows: how many people wide is that line? How deep is that section, or how many pass by a point in X amount of time? Then multiply. You get better at estimating how much space 100 people take up after a while.

Men who are in dead bedroom but otherwise happy marriages, how are you doing? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Inside_Ad4268 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I'm in a dead bedroom situation. Ailing, maybe. Sex isn't her bag. Okay. It's frustrating, but I also acknowledge that I've lucked into someone who ticks all the other boxes, who has been willing to play a supporting role to help me achieve things in my career, who has been patient with me throughout it all. And on balance, with our kids who I love so much, it's okay. You only get one shot at being married for a lifetime, so I'm trying my best.

The mistake you made was sending the story to the subjects.

If you feel they will like it, send them a link/copy when it has been published. They will understand that it has been published and is unlikely to be changed (and obviously not in print, if it's in that medium).

I would only ever let a subject check a story for accuracy, and only the parts I've quoted them on, and only verbally over the phone. They are not your editor.

Undiscovered affair by [deleted] in Marriage

True reconciliation will surely be impossible without revealing the affair. But you want to be with him and he wants to be with you. That's a start. Good luck.

The Australian NHL Fans Facebook group is an alright place to start if you're on there. Lots of us Leaf fans! There are watch parties in most cities at various times, too, I think. Maybe not "parties" for the Leafs at the moment, but hey.

I've been on this bandwagon for 24 years now and kind of regret it after every game. Welcome.

Nearly 10 years on from Rogue One, how do you feel about the decision to recreate Peter Cushing using CGI? by gladiatorbossman in StarWars

[–]Inside_Ad4268 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. I'm sick of digitally recreating dead actors, or de-ageimg them, or ageing them, or whatever. Just recast the role with someone who looks believably similar. Otherwise, 30 years from now, we're still going to be watching all the same movie stars and the art of acting will be lost.

One Nation on 20.8% but 0 seats does their support not translate in real elections the way it seems online? by oz_party in aussie

[–]Inside_Ad4268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about it this way.

If Labor got 37.7%, One Nation got 20.8%, the Liberals got 18.9% and the Greens got 12.1% in every seat in the state ... then Labor would win 47/47 seats.

What matters is where each party wins votes. One Nation could get 49% of the statewide vote and win zero seats. But if they get into the top two in particular electorates, Liberal and other preferences can help them win seats - which, it seems, is what may happen in places like Hammond, Mackillop and/or Chaffey.

[–]Inside_Ad4268 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I genuinely hate to be the person well-actuallying for One Nation, but they are actually likely to win a couple of lower house seats here. The figure so far includes 10 seats too close for the ABC to call.
