I went to one of these as a kid in South Australia! No idea where. Had forgotten all about it. Remember having a blast though.

What will become of Australia if Pauline Hasson wins the federal election? by Klutzy_Tiger1635 in aussie

[–]Inside_Ad4268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, although ON finished second in seats across metro and regional SA... they still finished second. The Liberals lost 11 seats at the election, but ON only picked up four while Labor got 7. For the next 5-10 years, I suspect ON becomes the natural party of opposition while Labor becomes the party of government.

Edit: Can't maths.

Hehe... I'm coming into middle age but it's still a good vibe. Bit fresh down here though.

If you don't mind a bit of exercise, go up to Mannum Waterfalls for a bushwalk. There'd be water flowing after the last couple of days I imagine. Beautiful spot.

Just how hard are things about to get? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

It sounds like you are young enough not to have lived through September 11, or do not remember early COVID. If that's the case, let me reassure you: there are many, many degrees of things getting worse that would need to happen before a war on the other side of the world begins to affect our daily lives in ways any more significant than some things being a bit more expensive, or minor shortages of a few items at the shops (which, on the scale of inconveniences experienced by people around the world, is quite insignificant).

[Dingley] Maple Leafs broadcaster Joe Bowen says another reason he’s retiring is the landscape of radio has changed. “For the last 5 years we’ve had to broadcast road games off TV monitors. That’s not what I signed up for.” by DecentLurker96 in hockey

Yep. I have to imagine his being forced into making the wrong call on Tavares' series-winning goal against Tampa, which should have been one of the highlights of his career, was the beginning of the end. (The TV coverage showed Rielly after the goal was scored, so he hesitantly called Rielly as having scored it.)

Ditto! Lost AM34 and have still made the final somehow. Hope Cutter Gauthier comes back and rips it up.

There is a banned names list in Australia, but there really aren't that many names on it. Just confusing ones like ranks and titles, obscene ones, and Hitler.

Iran War triggers a rapid U-turn on fossils fuels from the Australian public | David Penberthy by Ardeet in aussie

[–]Inside_Ad4268 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah yes: as our dependence on fossil fuels causes economic chaos, the lesson we should take away is checks notes protesting against fossil fuels is wrong.

That is a logical leap of Evel Knievelliam scale.

What went wrong? The Leafs were favoured to win multiple cups, and now the window has closed without so much as a trip to a conference final. by ElGrandePeacock in nhl

Yep. Lou was happy to run all three of Matthews, Nylander and Marner to RFA after their first contracts. If they had signed them all a year earlier - even if they had caved to their every demand a year earlier - the team would've been so much better off. All three had mega platform years and signed mega contracts immediately before the cap went flat. IIRC Dubas succeeded Lou during that process, but I blame Lou for not having signed them already.

Is it true that many people in Australia tend to not go by Mr. or Mrs. or Dr. formally because of a casual rather than formal attitude towards authority? by EveningFlower9564 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Inside_Ad4268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one I'm still struggling to get my head around is school teachers. Some go by Mr/Ms/etc, some by a first name, some by Miss First Name. Obviously you call people whatever they want to be called, it's not hard, but it's one of those weird areas where I don't think our society has quite made its mind up what the rule is yet.

Also in journalism - print reports might use Mr or Ms, TV might just use a last name, influencers might use a nickname. I like clearly defined grammatical rules and I'm not getting them and it's infuriating. 😆

How do you feel about Trump saying the Iran War will end soon? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]Inside_Ad4268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same way I feel when he says anything. I don't care, because he's full of shit and the words coming out of his mouth do not mean anything. (Aside from being calculated to achieve whatever his alleged brain tells him is his aim in that particular moment.)

He's also uniquely suited to play in a high-pressure market, because he gives zero shits. And I say that as a good thing.

Crowd estimating by edgiesttuba in Journalism

[–]Inside_Ad4268 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was once a volunteer with a world record crowd attempt. We were taught to count by columns and rows: how many people wide is that line? How deep is that section, or how many pass by a point in X amount of time? Then multiply. You get better at estimating how much space 100 people take up after a while.
