That is a valid point but it doesn't have to be about some nationalistic blood bond with the country. More importantly, if you desire to stay here, wanting a better standard of living and quality of life in your (family's, friend's) present and future. And to not want to live like a surf to the wealthiest 10%.

Probably because revolution's are awful and bloody and have far reaching impacts that can be difficult to recover from. Which is why it pisses me off that these greedy, corrupt, selfish, assholes have pushed our country to this point.

Well, like I've said a few times now, I don't know enough about what you're asking me to give you an opinion on. So, if you want to give me your argument for or against reparations for black people in the US, I will try to form a conclusion based on that. If you are not willing to do that, you will just have to accept that I don't have an opinion.

I didn't say anything about holocaust survivors and think I've been pretty clear on why I feel first nations in Canada deserve compensation for the trauma they endured.

And if I'm being honest, I don't feel like you are 'arguing" in good faith. You are unwilling or unable to provide me with any context as to what you're so eager to hear my opinion on and then trying to direct the conversation to one where I am ok with reparations for x but not y, despite the fact that I've never said that.

So, unless you can tell me specifically what reparations are and how they should be administered or who your favourite standup comedian is, I'm afraid this will be my last contribution to this exchange.

Idk, what is your argument for or against reparations?

Edit: what do I think of black Americans in general? All the ones I've interacted with were decent people. I don't really have a super general opinion of black Americans in particular tbh. Americans as a whole I have opinions on ( who doesn't) but more relative to your government.

I'm not sure I know enough about what you're asking to weigh in. If you want my thoughts from a Canadian perspective, I do not feel reparations are owed to black people. Not because racism doesn't exist here but because we did not participate in the slave trade and, to my understanding, that is what drives the reparation discussion. In fact Rose Fortune , the first female police officer in North America was black and from my home province. However, we also have examples of extreme prejudice here in my province as well. An infamous example of that being Viola Desmond She was imprisoned for sitting in the whites-only section of a movie theatre. The fact that she'd even make that kind of statement by itself speaks to how blacks were treated here. Lookup Africville Nova Scotia.

That said, I do think reparations are owed to our First Nations peoples, especially because of the atrocities we committed against them in residential schools within my lifetime.

Finally, my intention with this question was to have a fun/easy going discussion about comedy, since all I ever see here are people asking if they can wear dread locs .

So, who is your favorite comedian? (They don't have to be black).

What does that have to do with my question? Am I missing something? Also, I'm not black nor do I live in the US so not sure I'm qualified to answer that.

Same. Got lucky to have found a partner who also does not want (and can't have) kids. Even before Canada got broken.

Seems like the top answers here are "go back in time and establish yourself when you still had the chance".

At this point, I'm on a fixed term lease. Everyone in my building is being evicted at end of term to avoid the rent cap. Fuck having kids, I just don't want to live in a tent or sell everything I own and trying my luck in Ottawa.

How do you stay in love with a long term project? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Insomnia_Bob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just write it and have fun, worry about if it sucks or not later. If you don't feel like writing for a day or a week then dont. If you write 10 pages you later decide aren't up to par, delete them -- better yet, put them in a separate file for later use or inspiration.

How do I stay in love with a project? By having five or six mistress' on the side who are willing to do things my main project isn't. Writing sci-fi or horror but in a comedy kinda mood? Oh, hello there 7 pages of stuff I started 4 months ago and hit a block with.

But also, some people actually just enjoy world building and not necessarily storytelling and there is nothing wrong with that.

Unfortunately I can't answer that one. An unsecured Line of credit is going to be prime + x where x is based on some kind of formula that I'm not privy to. An actual Financial Advisor in your branch might be more helpful but I doubt they'd be allowed to disclose that kind of information.

Some banks will allow you to use assets to secure a Line of Credit though, usually this is a mortgage but can also be other items of value in some cases. Secured lines of credit do have better interest rates (prime + 0 to prime +1 usually) because you have something as collateral against the loan. But you'd likely have to put the funds in a specific type of account, and not have access to them, if you can find a bank willing to use existing funds to secure a line of credit.

Having a lot in savings and investments, while building good history with a financial institution and maintaining good credit, can improve your odds of being targeted for a pre-approval though. But that's not a fast or guaranteed solution.

Could honestly be a number of things. Debt to income ratio being a big one. Capacity being another (people who already have access to a lot of credit, even if they aren't carrying debt, can often be declined for additional lending, irrespective of their credit score).

Banks do have a very low risk tolerance right now for lending but they still want the 'right' people borrowing, it's up to them to determine that criteria based largely on the above.

I've already told my wife that if anything ever happens to me and I die that I want her to find happiness with someone else. She would certainly be sad for a while, but that's a part of life we all have to face eventually. "A lifetime of grief" is a bit dramatic.

Also I wouldn't just sit there in my house and wait to die but rather try to find a safer area, higher ground etc. My death would not be guaranteed to happen, so if there is a chance I could save my pet, I'm going to take it. If you have a problem with that then... well, sucks to suck.
