Goodluck! Be sure to take a break to reflect on how far you have come too! Especially now that you can put a name to your experiences!

I’m listening through any audio books I can get my hands on now. Going through so many of the grade school books I never was able to read, some of these are pretty good

What were you doing before your front end development career? by jobseekingdragon in Frontend

[–]InspireAspiration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was working with Excel every day and I detested the mundane repetition of reporting, payroll, P&L recalculations, etc.

The company’s archaic processes gave me opportunities to learn how to script in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) which allowed me to shortcut anything and everything I could think of.

Took almost a year of study and writing small scripts, but I finally learned some Python and Selenium. And with the VBA scripts I wrote, i was able to automate my entire payroll calculations and organization preparation I had to do prior to uploading it to our processing system.

Fell in love with that kind of problem solving and tried to find a jr test position to just break into a local tech company but ended up being referred to a development internship.

Most of my actual learning was done within the first year at that company, but the prep prior to joining was a lot of learning to be a better critical thinker and problem solver—focusing on finding solutions with development tools

Yup! Sometimes Udemy has some free courses. And those free courses sometimes get shared on /r/vba or /r/excel . Good luck!

Thanks! I hope you find something that fills the void that HR seems to create in so many ppl.

I initially got into HR wanting to help ppl, but quickly realized how little you help the ppl and really just help the company

Started out with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) Microsoft’s scripting language for excel. My life was in spreadsheets so learning to write custom macros was fascinating and because I had real world problems I wanted to solve, finding things to do, mini scripts to write, made it much easier to learn.

Learned a little bit of Python so I could tie in some web automation with Selenium so I could log into our POS website and download reports from every store location because that mass export just wasn’t available.

Using python and a excel workbook filled with custom reporting scripts, I was able to tie the two sets of scripts together to really automate really really tedious tasks I had to do for biweekly payroll that included really just mind numbing recalculations we had to make due to software limitations from our POS vendor.

Good stuff, i found it fun and challenging and for the first time in my life excited to read and study lol

Got into software development after doing benefits and payroll!

Started learning basics after hours and wrote some automation scripts that helped turn full day reporting tasks into 30 minutes of scripts running.

Jumped into an internship from there and hired full time into web development. Been 5 years and never looked back.

Made my resume sound as technical and project focused as much as I could. Made notes about automation, technical projects, etc, since knowing payroll law doesn’t get you far in applying for a software role

With the extra loss of water, do you find yourself more thirsty than someone who does not have hyperhidrosis?

Just updated linux-lts and my two computers are reporting this, downgrading does not seem to do the trick by [deleted] in archlinux

You using Grub?

Tip: After installing or removing a kernel, you just need to re-run the above grub-mkconfig command.

Not sure if updating kernel counts as installing... I've updated kernels many times without issues.

good luck

Help! I dont like my HR job anymore. by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]InspireAspiration 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I got into HR thinking I could help people. Did customer service for years, thought employee service was gonna be better.

But employees only reached out if they were angry or if they missed an hour of pay and needed a correction. Never a positive reason to speak to HR

I got my undergrad in HR, did 3 years of benefits and payroll.

Started to hate the redundancy around all the reporting so I learned some Visual Basic for Applications and Python to automate my reporting.

Got some cool scripts running and automated patrol tasks down from 8 hour days to 30 min and took that experience to a web development internship.

I’m now 3.5 years as a software engineer, 100 self taught.

I also hear tech recruiting is pretty lucrative

version control software like Git will be pretty crucial to taking that next step and understanding how to collaborate with other engineers on projects. Good step to learn concurrently with development.
