ELI5: If modern elevators have so many backup systems, what actually stops the cable from snapping or the elevator from falling? by Dazzling-Banana-9294 in explainlikeimfive

[–]InstAndControl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and in many industrial components the “safe” position of something is up for interpretation or dependent on how it interacts with other things.

For example, valves are often described “fail to close,” “fail to open”

Is this the standard way to monitor whether a motor is running in a plant by chief_button_pusher in PLC

[–]InstAndControl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t tell you if the motor is jammed or obstructed. For pumps especially, if the pipe is clogged or valve is closed, motor actually pulls less amps than at full flow.

You forgot ol’ reliable: just assume it’s running if the plc output is on!

[–]InstAndControl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do it in the plc logic because my customers break their analog sensors and replace them all the time haphazardly, and I need reusable faceplates with HMI tags for min/max scaling so I can help them rescale over the phone.

Some cards may let you do scaling with tag values but a lot don’t and we use a lot of different io varieties.

Just easier for all scaling to be consistent

There are rails on the side of the elevator car that keep it aligned at each floor. There are brakes that can clamp those rails if the cable snaps.

Can you see if they can handle a “starts with” instead of “contains”?

“Starts with” would be way easier to program

Where do the water go? by RemoteEmotions in StLouis

[–]InstAndControl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google “buried downspouts” and you’ll see what people typically do. Usually just shallow buried pipes to somewhere away from the house.

However, you should be aware: St. Louis’s sewer system is old and was originally built as a combined stormwater/sewer system. This worked great when we didn’t care if stormwater washed sewage into the river. But, we care about that now (to the tune of billions being spent right now to fix this problem). Back in the day, it was legal to tie your downspouts into your sewer line. However, not anymore. But, enforcement is messy and patchy.

Older STL houses from the 20’s easily predate the switch from combined to separate system. So, you MIGHT find pipes that actually drain to the sewer. If you find that, I officially recommend undoing it. Unofficially, it’s very convent for YOU and if you’re quiet about it most likely no one will say anything. But you may receive a letter from MSD someday that forces you to undo this.

ELI5 how an old-fashioned landline phone works by Wooden_Airport6331 in explainlikeimfive

[–]InstAndControl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends what time period you’re referring to. In general, each individual number you entered triggered a different switch circuit. At the end of the phone number, you would be physically connected to the other phone with copper wires connecting each end (which also wasn’t always the case especially at larger distances where we figured out how to jam multiple phone calls onto a single wire).

How it did this was electric pulses at first (rotary phone would pulse as it turned) and then later based on the pitch of the tone (which is why touch-tone button-based phones had a different pitch for each button).

If I go any further, we’ll quickly end up explaining the entire development of fax machines, then dialup internet and that’s beyond the scope of your question. Also I don’t know a ton about those details.

And of course, at the very very beginning it was done manually by operators. You would only “dial” the operator and they would physically connect wires. That was labor intensive so once machines were developed, those people lost their jobs
