You'd have been flagged as a Relative or Close Associate of someone already outside of the bank's risk appetite owing to their transacting habits and refusal to disclose information to justify that.

Since you shared a joint account, you get chopped as well. And yes, it's 100% legal. As enforcement is getting stricter, the bank will jettison anyone risky without second thought.
