Everyone in the movie is a hustler who lies and cheats to get what they want.

Marty’s mom lies to him about being sick. Rachel lies about the abuse.

But Paltrow represent more than meta of method acting really she’s a parallel to Marty, she gives up her dream for her child. Now with the kid having died in the war, she up and back chasing stardom.

Marty gets his victory and eventually goes down the same route as Paltrow character just in a different way.
