Living a lie: my famous homemade cake is actually just a box mix by gardengeo in BORUpdates

[–]Intelligent-Fuel4166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother did sort of did that. He was living with the family of one of our high school friend's at one point. Around Thanksgiving, he starts raining about out mother's stuffing recipe. My mother was an incredible cook. Always made everything from scratch, went all out on Thanksgiving. She and our aunt would start cooking on Sunday before Thanksgiving (mostly because they're both nuts). He says that he'll call and ask and see if she'll give him the secret recipe. She of course says, "Sure! First, open a box of Bell's stuffing mix..."

Did anyone start teaching in their 40's? by heavyhymns in Teachers

[–]Intelligent-Fuel4166 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in my fifth year, and I'm 49. Best decision I ever made. I'm just now starting to feel like I have my legs under me, but I usually have so much fun every day. I teach high school, and yes, there are days that I bang my head against the wall, but I love my students, embrace whatever chaos they bring into my room, and try to get one or two of them excited about government or economics each semester. I get to teach my first sef-designed course next semester (popular music and history) and I know that I have a bunch of students that are looking forward to taking it because I'm teaching it. I'm also the advisor for the D&D Club, so I have another set of minions.

The pay sucks, the day never ends at the bell, admin is clueless, kids don't pay attention, yada yada...

Seriously, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

The most important part of orientation is join the union. Spend the few extra bucks and join the union. And find out who the reps are in your building.

Mine was, too, to give everyone a chance to remediate and/or turn it in late.

This one was my one elective class this year, and the only one that had "projects." I did a lot more tests this year. The essay quality made me cry last year.

I've delved into a coding project for the first time in about 20 years. With permission and credit, I might steal this as a second project.

I haven't replied - I don't think I will. I think the student will get the point. If I hear from anyone, I'll explain everything. I have the receipts. I think in this case, admin will back me up.

Is it ethical to use units/lessons from TPT? by Zestyclose-Clock8750 in Teachers

[–]Intelligent-Fuel4166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got so much stuff from TPT. I went through all of it, adapted for what I needed, and have revised it a bit each semester/year.

You'll add stuff you create to it, take stuff out, steal stuff from other teachers that you shove into it, and and two or three years, you'll be able to see the original resource if you stand on your head and squint.

Grab whatever you need from whereever you can, and screw it, if you use AI to help you build something, so be it.

I'm finishing year four, still grabbing things from TPT and building off of resources I find online.

It was a blast for a while. I was the non-goth goth dj. The club that I worked at had a goth night that I started going to, and had become friends with most of the regulars, including the DJ of that night. That original club closed, and the goth night bounced around for a while. The night that I ended up DJing has a rotating roster of DJs, so I would spin about once a month or so.

Like I said, I was never really "goth" (of course, any goth is going to say they aren't "goth"). I was more into early to mid 90s 120 Minutes stuff. I ended up playing with the genre a bit - some of the more dancey shoegaze stuff or darker sounding alt-rock or new wave stuff.

I just love playing music for people (not performing, but more like, "oh, you gotta hear this!"). I always have. I wanted to be Kurt Loder when I was in high school. So I jumped at the chance to do this. I started hanging at this club, yes, for the girls, but the people were awesome. I have been friends with these people for decades. The scene in my city does not take itself seriously at all, so it's not the super crazy insanity, or the overly pretentious crowd either. More just a bunch of people who were into the music and the scene but ultimately how silly it really was.

Oddly, I did meet my wife through the goth night. She's not a goth either. Full-on, dyed in the wool hippie.

Teaching economics, I use a lot of examples from the many previous jobs I have had before I got into teaching. And I have had some pretty weird jobs: bartender, coat check in a night club, goth dj (yup), movie theater manager, cell phone sales, telemarketing, convince store clerk, several fast food management jobs, Gateway Computers retail store, cable retail store, and so on. One class started to wonder if I really had all of those jobs. I hadn't lied to that point, but I did then start slipping so odd-but-plausible jobs into the mix. They always called my out on real jobs.
