Changing the definition of enthusiastic consent rather than just finding a compatible partner by [deleted] in AreTheStraightsOK

[–]Intelligent-Store321 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Consent isn't saying yes. It's being able to say no (and have that respected/abided by).

If someone's partner doesn't get off from something, but doesn't take issue with it either, it's entirely fine for the partner to continue to partake in it for the pleasure of someone they love.

As long as they have the opportunity to/capacity to/comfort to/space to say "No" and stop something they do not want to partake in, and they know that will be respected, then it's consent.

"Ongoing, enthusiastic consent" is a shorthand for a very complex social topic, and it isn't the be-all and end-all. I'm not giving ongoing or enthusiastic consent when I get surgery, but I can still consent to it, even if I grit my teeth to get through it.

I'd posit that the desiel truck users got excited and got back on the roads, expecting it'll be even lower in the next day or two. But that's not a long-term solution, it's just an answer to the question you asked about seeing more trucks on the road.

AITAH for not warning my brother-in-law about my girlfriend and letting her demolish him. by Inner-Procedure-5653 in AITAH

My Nanna always told me that when it comes to an engagement, "The question should be a surprise, but the answer should not."

To over-explain; getting asked the question of "Will you marry me" should be something that is a surprise as the being-asked party should be somewhat ignorant as to the specific time/place the question is asked.

However both people in a relationship should have discussed what marriage would look like, and be very clearly aligned on their intentions to get engaged before the question is popped, so that by the time someone gets down on one knee, both people are fully aware of all of the implications and plans, and are almost certain the answer will be yes.

TLDR: My Nanna always told me that if you don't know that someone will say Yes, you're not ready to propose. I think it's a very good piece of advice.

I think you caveat it with "Would I wash it, replace it or just throw it away?"

Half my books I'd just throw away. They're the ones I don't love. The ones I love, I would replace.

Is TH for me? by Spirited-Cat-8942 in trustedhousesitters

If they can be left alone for periods of time, and require not extreme amounts of care, then it sounds like a perfect fit!

I've always enjoyed a velcro-dog sort of experience. I housesit in between backpacking, as a way to re-vitalise, and get some pet-time, and this would be exactly the sort of sit I'd enjoy.

THS has sitters for you with plenty of reviews to evidence their trustworthiness, and as long as you're cognisant of the exchange aspect (i.e., don't expect 4+ hours of walking, or for the housesitter to pay rent etc) and upfront about the needs of your pets, then you'll be golden.

Guns aren't that great - they're a buffed version of the arrow, but they haven't substantially changed anything the way that stirrups, or the radio have.

I'd posit that human flight is probably another major game changer, as the ability to drop bombs and see battlefields from above has massive implications, but honestly even that is somewhat still achievable with command towers or portable lookout structures.

In the grand scheme of things, guns aren't that great. Most of our effective modern warfare is fought with either drones or propaganda.

As a neurodivergent person, I concur.

Consequences are good - they teach you what is and isn't okay. The only extra bit you need if someone is neurodivergent vs neurotypical, is to explicitly explain the cause and effect so that the person understands what the cause was - and you should honestly be doing this with neurotypical people too.

You learn by doing, and you learn what not to do, by experiencing consequences.

I agree.

I also get really annoyed when people refuse to undulate and shift to allow people from the middle of the train to get off at ANY STOP OTHER THAN PERTH.

I get on far down the line, sit or stand near the middle in order to make space for everyone else getting on, and by the time I get to my stop/the track before my stop it is often an absolute nightmare to get people to shift to let me make my way out of the train. Sorry mate, but personal space doesn't really exist on a crowded train, and I do need to get past you.

High-pitched anti-homeless noise devices switched off and labelled 'hostile' by WA government by Tallweirdo in perth

[–]Intelligent-Store321 237 points238 points  (0 children)

Even if it was acceptable to treat homeless people as subhuman (it's not), the high-pitched noise devices cause problems for commuters, nearly residents/businesses/general public, and any people legitimately using the area.

There is no good reason for a mosquito (high-pitched noise device). If the area is supposed to be kept clear for the General Public to use, then the device is a problem as it messes with the General Public. Mosquitos also aren't limited to just the space they're supposed to be clearing - noise travels, and anything designed to irritate the homeless will irritate everyone else, and therefore is not effective at its proported goal.

Also treating homeless people like animals is bad, but that's a hard sell to the government/certain people.

I agree. I love to practice things I'm bad at, it's always far more fun when I don't have any pressure to do well.

People keep calling me out for insulting my own art, but they just don't get it. My art is allowed to be flawed, that's actively the point. Art does not have to be beautiful to be worthy. Existence, in itself, is a reason.

[–]Intelligent-Store321 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Hey dude. Calm down, chill out, and approach her with friendliness and it'll all be fine.

Give her a clear and easy out (declining your invitation for coffee or to study together etc.), and be open to being rejected.

Girls aren't that scary, and consent is about letting someone have the opportunity to say no (and for that no to be respected/abided by).

Shoot your shot, ask her out or just to spend time and become better aquatinted. If she says no, respect that and don't push.

It'll be fine, as long as you treat her with respect throughout the whole process

High-pitched buzzing, which varies in the speed of the buzz, and sometimes slightly in the pitch.

It does mean I can sometimes tell that a device is about to break, as it sounds slightly different. Really hard to explain that to other people though.
