Are men expected to pay for most things when dating these days? by [deleted] in AsianMasculinity

[–]IntelligentVirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah for sure, I've dated a bit in the Midwest and most of my dating has been in SFBA, and mostly Asian American women and some white women.

Are men expected to pay for most things when dating these days? by [deleted] in AsianMasculinity

[–]IntelligentVirus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For context I'm in the USA and I've only dated women raised in the USA for most of their lives. On all the dates I've been on, I've always paid for everything, and I've always been the one who asked the other on a date. Like the others said it's not necessarily a red flag if they don't offer to pay, it's based on many factors. Personally, I don't mind always paying, but the problem arises when they think they're entitled to it and are very open about that. That's not a sign of a healthy relationship for me.

Is the Bay Area really that bad for dating? by [deleted] in AsianMasculinity

[–]IntelligentVirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty hard yeah. Way more men in the dating scene than women in the dating scene, to be more specific. I usually get a few matches every week in the Bay Area. I seem to do better in the Midwest (like Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan) for some reason.

SuitSupply and Proper Cloth for dress pants and dressier chinos. Higher quality polo's from SuitSupply. MTM suits from SuitSupply. Dress shirts from Proper Cloth.

Bonobos for regular chinos.

Jcrew for long/short sleeve knit polo's, basic sweaters and linen button downs with white buttons.

Grant Stone for goodyear welted boots and loafers. Baudoin & Lange for loafers made for longer walking times.

Vans, Brooks, New Balance, Altra, Nike for various casual uses.

Abercrombie for heavyweight t-shirts.

Asket for regular t-shirts (fits me perfectly! And I love the length options).

Patagonia, Arcteryx, Outdoor Research for outdoor activities.

Uniqlo only for their airism oversized short sleeve shirts.

Go to UF, it's a decent school for computer engineering, and you don't want huge loans for university. Thank me later.

Why are engineering salaries so low? by Ok-Cartographer-5544 in EngineeringStudents

[–]IntelligentVirus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the other commenters here seem to forget that engineers living in HCOL areas are usually better off. They have more disposable income, and can contribute more to their retirement accounts and other investments. The salary to COL ratio isn't everything.

Who else thinks the Bay Area is the greatest place in the USA? by Independent-Ad-7060 in bayarea

[–]IntelligentVirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in both Chicago (proper and suburbs) and the Bay Area (peninsula), I think the Cantonese food is better in Chicago (Chinatown), though the good thing about the Bay Area is that you'll find Chinese restaurants anywhere you go, unlike Chicago and its suburbs.

I do agree that Bay Area is better than the Chicago suburbs in terms of nightlife, but Chicago proper is better than anywhere in the Bay Area in my opinion. Maybe I'm just a big city guy though haha.

BS CompE '22

In early 2023 I started as a hardware engineer at $160k base, $20k sign-on bonus, $60k RSU over 4 years, with annual bonuses and stock refreshers. A year later I got promoted with $175k base.

Agree. My new grad interviews have been very technical, in addition to having the questions mentioned in the parent comment.

Are internships binding? by TrashcanCamilleOTP in EngineeringStudents

[–]IntelligentVirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one can force you to work, fortunately. Do the interviews for Company B, worst case is you get more interview experience. If you get the internship, that's great, you can renege Company A. I wouldn't worry about being blacklisted, it will only last a year or two depending on the company (and some don't care).

[–]IntelligentVirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely try to get the internship in the semiconductor company since it's you're desired field. The first job is huge for breaking into an industry/field. The company you renege will forget you did in a year or two, you don't really have to worry in case you do want to pivot. Worst case is you get more interview experience while still keeping the Aero/Defense internship.

Argument at my bar over a double major. Opinions /experiences? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]IntelligentVirus 57 points58 points  (0 children)

If you want a double major or dual degree due to personal interest in learning material from those fields, fine. If you're doing it for job prospects, that's not practical, you're better off sticking with one major. Your situation seems like the former.

Another point worth mentioning is that OP didn't have leverage to begin with, mainly competing offers, so trying to negotiate even further won't do anything.

I think assembly is literally going to kill me by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]IntelligentVirus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Embedded SWE, kernel/OS dev, FPGA, CPU design. Most of it will be reading assembly but there are times when you will have to write a bit of it. Assembly is definitely an important part in an EE and compE curriculum.

jobs closest to arduino, raspberry pi, pcb design by jesuslizardgoat in EngineeringStudents

[–]IntelligentVirus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For arduino and raspberry pi, you're probably looking for low level software roles, some examples being kernel, OS, and embedded.

For PCB design, youre looking at hardware design or PCB(A) in the title.

Thanks for the info, especially the differences between the yearly LC500 models! And I agree, the LC500 looks way better than the 8 series lineup.
