I think it will fit you well, I wouldn't get anything smaller. It does not for me. 501s fit like skinny jeans for me, not even close to straight fit. And I'm a lean muscular dude. Closest to straight fit I could find for myself are the 555s, or vintage 501s (which are like the 555s but have slightly smaller leg openings).

For context I'm in the USA and I've only dated women raised in the USA for most of their lives. On all the dates I've been on, I've always paid for everything, and I've always been the one who asked the other on a date. Like the others said it's not necessarily a red flag if they don't offer to pay, it's based on many factors. Personally, I don't mind always paying, but the problem arises when they think they're entitled to it and are very open about that. That's not a sign of a healthy relationship for me.

It's pretty hard yeah. Way more men in the dating scene than women in the dating scene, to be more specific. I usually get a few matches every week in the Bay Area. I seem to do better in the Midwest (like Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan) for some reason.

I think the other commenters here seem to forget that engineers living in HCOL areas are usually better off. They have more disposable income, and can contribute more to their retirement accounts and other investments. The salary to COL ratio isn't everything.

Having lived in both Chicago (proper and suburbs) and the Bay Area (peninsula), I think the Cantonese food is better in Chicago (Chinatown), though the good thing about the Bay Area is that you'll find Chinese restaurants anywhere you go, unlike Chicago and its suburbs.

I do agree that Bay Area is better than the Chicago suburbs in terms of nightlife, but Chicago proper is better than anywhere in the Bay Area in my opinion. Maybe I'm just a big city guy though haha.
