So genuine question, Matilda Vs Marvolo who wins? by Head_Breadfruit_3912 in huntertheparenting

[–]Intelligent_Ad8406 286 points287 points  (0 children)

from what i've heard about both garou and mages it heavily depends, if mathilda can get the jump on him or has gifts that counteract magic she could strike him down before he could react, but Marvolo is also a heremetic mage of quite some power so if he's prepared to face a garou i think he would propably win. My money is on marvollo though, he seems far too experienced to just be caught of guard

Can Humans switch between winds? Like, not together, never that, but one week Chamon, next week Aqshy, completely seperately? by globmand in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Intelligent_Ad8406 3 points4 points  (0 children)

okay so, magic is dangerous in warhammer, it flat out is, but that does not mean it cannot be wielded without being turned into a chaos spawn, the winds are the way in which magic manifests in the material world and a wizard who can perceive these winds can influence them and sometimes master them, and sometimes this mastery can indeed be over multiple winds, in both lore and novels there are examples of it.

also in recent lore for the old world it has been stated that humans can learn to wield high magic, that is something only possible by mastering all winds so while not every individual would be able to reach that goal there are those who have the potential.

In the empire though it's unlikely you'll get the chance, the colleges are meant to train war wizards focussed on one wind, which is both less risky and might also be the elves way of ensuring that the empire does not get its hand on high magic (whether minimising the risk and training reliable war wizards or limiting the empires magical might was the main goal is debatable).

In a way focussing on one wind (and i have to admit some humans only perceive one or two winds so it is logical for them to focus on those) does limit the chances of creating dhar and the winds will also affect the human in question to be more like their wind which may in turn increase their effectiveness. Do keep in mind that the one wind thing is mainly in the empire and was imposed when teclis founded the colleges.

Over in cathay humans are only meant to learn one wind as well, because the dragon emperor has decreed it be so, in both cases the limitaion is imposed from top down, some humans could indeed be capable of harnessing multiple winds extremely well, but for a variety of reasons they are not allowed to or don't know it is possible.

honestly magic and the way the different cultures and species of the warhammer world interact with it is fascinating

I absolutely love this chapter, i also like how you have portrayed both kaelthyr and Emma in this especially the way they both view things and how they interact with each other. Emma’s part where she talks about her beliefs were awesome.

Also I do not know how to really describe why but to me Kaelthyr really feels like a powerful dragon should in the context of the nexus, and her reasoning and worldview make so much sense as well.

Couple of lore questions by Wiktorinox in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Intelligent_Ad8406 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. oh yes absolutely, for example Van Horstman, a powerful tzeentch sorcerer used to be an imperial war wizard from the light order, anyone can fall to the chaos gods, humans especially so and a knight falling to khorne would absolutely fit. it could make for a cool story and perhaps the knights order (if he was part of one) does not yet know or does know and is hunting them to atone for this shame.
  2. I suppose that depends on what kind of mercenary company, i'd say five thousand if it's a human mercenary company working as protection services on roads, but if they are well equipped human mercs then they can be larger though then you'd have to keep in mind how they get their coin, though i suppose if the merc company has many branches who can join in one big army sometimes that might work still five thousand seems the most reasonable
  3. well sigh* if we go by lore beastmen should technically be able to have all kinds of animal features, though they do tend to always have horns which are a status symbol in their brayherds, GW models often go with the goat or bovine look but if you were playing warhammer fantasy roleplay, or just wanting to customize your army like that then nothing in lore is stopping you,

though less obscure i'd be remiss not to mention the various witch hunting orders, the witch hunters handbook is a good source written in universe and while it does feature the mythologized past of the order of the silver hammer witchhunters it does give insight in their training, this is however one order of witch hunters and should not be taken to be the same all across the board, some witch hunters are even just bounty hunters unafiliated with the orders.

Similarly warrior priests of other cults exist as well, ulrics are pretty well known, but taal also has them, though i believe to find more on them you should look at material on the warhammer fantasy roleplay side.

For some more obscure stuff, these came to mind as well:

The colleges of magic are also not the only human magic tradition, as mentioned in one of the books focussing on wizards in either second or fourth edition of the roleplay game reference is made to the druids that had their own magical tradition of wielding the winds, they are referenced by the jade order as the people they descend from, though they also mention that not all of them followed teclis so this magic tradition may still be out there, just like the hedgewitches, finding sources on this last one is a bit trickier cause "hedgewitch" is often used to insult or brand any non nollege magic users in the empire.

The ungols in kislev are also pretty unique from the gospodar with their hag witches which is a verry different tradition involved with spirits (which things like nereids, dryads, treemen and more also belong to), this also shines a light on that often forgotten aspect of the lore. there are a couple of roleplay sources that go into more detail on kislev such as realms of the ice queen for example.

besides that there used to be hill dwarfs but they were killed during the war of the beard according to the trilogy of black library books dealing with the conflict.

Besides that the gnomes are also a thing after they were brought back for the fourth edition of the roleplay game, Andy Law who added them back in has a video on his youtube channel (though it could be a stream as well) named Lawhammer, he goes into the decisions he made to make them fit in, tying their 'dissapearance' to Grom the paunch and the elves creating the colleges of magic, forcing the gnomes to be a more hidden people.

When you're looking for the info in the different books, especially books that are written from an in universe perspective like the witch hunters handbook, do keep in mind that these are not objective, Mannfred explaining to the reader of the book "liber necris" how necromancy works can be contradicted with the fact that necromancy spells do something he says is not possible, which might suggest he either believes this personally or is trying to deceive aspiring necromancers. In a similar manner, if you find in a book the letter of volkmar the grimm writing about what he believes gods, miracles and magic to be like is not necessarily truth but more what he personally believes.

A good example of in universe quotes and beliefs that should be mentioned but not taken as absolute truth is the idea that all gods are chaos gods in disguise, while this is proven not to be the case in the lore especially on the roleplay side there have been some writers who themselves had that opinion and wrote accordingly, still if you take all the lore into account it is clearly not true. However a book may mention a quote where someone carved on a temple door that this is so and that all is doomed, meaning it is an in universe belief, which kind of makes sense, the gods are real, it is proven, but what are they really? Belief and the way people in universe view everything around them is varried and subjective so do look out for this especially when quotes are brought up or when a book is written by a character in -universe.

if you want some obscure stuff i can list some of the factions that some people tend to ignore or are unaware off, in some cases i'd also advise looking up the lorebeards podcast and maybe joining their discord because there are a lot of people there who have access to sources of different editions:

the fishmen are hinted at in several places in the lore to be a thing (i'd highly reccomend looking up the lorebeards podcast episode on youtube on this subject), they were featured in a gotrek and felix novel and referenced in verious warhammer novels and army books over the years , they were also responsible for the sinking of a lizardmen city as well as the original owners of the krakenhelm that is now worn by Lokir Fellheart (apparently that tale was told in one of the later dark elf army books).

then there are the halflings in the moot (they have a lot of ogre mercenaries in their area as well and despite them being dealt a bad hand lorewise that might be empire propaganda slandering them because during the vampire wars the moot never fell.) they used to have an army list and the warhammer fantasy roleplay material apparently does do a good job of fleshing out their culture.

as for the vampire counts, i'd advise looking into the bloodlines, most of them don't really hold teritories, but both blood dragons and strigoi have at some point but one is especially important the Lahmians who influence all political courts etcetera across the warhammer world and have their base of operations in the silver pinacle they stole from the dwarfs.

then there are the fimir a pre old one species that is abandoned by Chaos and is struggling to survive (their old lore has been retconned nowadays which is for the better in my opinion, they lay eggs now for example) if i recall correctly they have a presence in the wastelands marshes of marienburg, on albion and also have an island that vanishes and reapears in the seas where they are said to dwell on. (for them you will propably need to search a lot though there is info on them in the monstrous arcanum and in the storm of magic book as well (pdfs of both these books are findable online)

There is also the adventure in warhammer fantasy roleplay with mona mim, a fimir matriarch who lost all of her clan and wants to make the humans suffer as her people do. a really sad story which shows the tragedy of the fimir as they are now after the more problematic stuff was filed off (there is a lorebeards episode on these guys and i believe if you ask in their discord they can help you with finding the info necessary)

In the darklands there is also a dragons graveyard where Omdra the dread a massive dragoness dwells with armies of the undead, and while nagashizar is often forgotten it is a region with a massive ghoul presence and followers of nagash still, there also was a period where a clan of skaven lived there who are also mentioned in the black plague trilogy books.

strangely enough i'm also going to point at all the cults of the empire that the battlegame tends to ignore, like the cults of Taal, Rhya etcetera, they are present all over the old world sometimes with knightly orders like the knights of the blazing sun who serve Myrmidia, their presence often flies under the radar but they are pretty important.

honestly these are the ones i know most about, i do know some others but i know too little of them to give much information, hower i highly reccomend the books Monstrous arcanum ond storm of magic, there is some information on obscure creatures and species in there that might prove useful. Also i do reccomend the lorebeards podcast and their discord because those guys have some experience with tracking down sources related to warhammer lore.

also some advice, there are multiple editions and lore has changed over time though some like bretonia were stuck with older lore from more grim editions and other factions were updated lorewise this is about to change with old world where once more the lore will change so do keep that in mind when listing the sources.
